Turnigy HXT Powered Custom Cruiser Worklog

...didn't you see the first trike?

Make that three builds. I do remember it! :D

bahahaha is that a midstrength? or is it some foreign wa beer, in that case brewed by hot super models poored through your perl white beachsand filter and served to your seat sniffin pollies  get some violent bogan into ya.

it looks like you haven't ridden it yet kim, i thought u woulda jumped straight on an ridden over here to bitch slap hyena. . Im just quietly waiting for my drives to rock up, then its full steam ahead into building some custom frames, the only thing thats still a problem for me is making a battery enclosure. i dont really want to use fiberglass, metal is too heavy and looks too boxy, carbon fiber is well...too expensive, i wish there were an easy way to make a PE mould and vacuum setup. I have even thought about using thin hdpe sheet inside a pocketed heavy duty vinyl enclosure....material very similar to curtain side truck tarps. Reasoning is, i would like a box and drive setup that would take all of a few minutes to remove from frame/bike so normal cleaning can take place.

That photo right there, says it all. I put a larger copy in my Bike folder. When lazy asses say how hard it is to do things, I will let them see how SOME folks just go ahead and do it, anyway.

That is a perfect photo to actually compare the Bike size, to a person seated next to it. WELL DONE, MATE. 8) 8) 8) 8)

I spent Sunday stripping down the parts and paint from a bike frame because i felt inspired to DO something because of this build. I am dragging my slow brain through the mud researching Lipo setups because of this build.

No way my finished project will ever come close to this bike, but i am DOING something.

AussieJester, thank you for the inspiration. Awesome ride. Good on you mate.

AJ,
I Hate you.....
You have set the standard too high my brother. :D

If i ever have the guts to post a pic of my hoopty rides on this board again it will be because i am too drunk to care.

Really though, mad props to your exicution of plan & attention to detail. Its been a pleasure to peek in on this project & see the idea turn to fruit through caring hands.

I gotta go now before I get a tooth ache from alll this sugar talk.
that bike is as schweet as fairy PUKE!
I hope you enjoy riding it as much as building it.
when you get a minute p-chop my face riding that rod
Ciao'

Yes the bike tends to look alot bigger than it really is in the pics on its own, here's
a few screen captures from the video my mate shot yesterday, I'm using it in
a video compilatiojn i am editing together, as you can see the bike isn't super huge.

corners very well and reeeeally pulls up nicely with the Juicy 7s too..

I tell ya that is an awesome site to see . keep having fun bro . watching a fellow like you build these is the type of stuff that inspires others .

still like this photo

Damn that looks good, congrats. Now hurry up and get the video online before I send hyena to kick your ass with whatever good limb he has left

Oh and try have some of the clip without a sound track, I'd like to hear how the bike sounds too...

Looks great, Kim!

Cheers fellas...unfortunately video is some weeks away now after a slight hiccup this morning-->

FEAR the power of the BIG Turnigy Outrunner  ^^tiz what it will do to J.J in Cr i thinkz

I must add, this belt was looking lil shabby, it had a nick out of the side from getting caught in the pulley when i first mocked the bike up and tested it, took me a few goes to sort the correct
belt alignment and tension out as a result the belt took a hiding STILL serious effort to snap it i thought, had just come off a 50km/hr run, rounded the corner into my street hit the power
to drive out of the corner and SNAPz...Thankfully about 30 seconds later a jogger came down the road and kindle pushed me up the hill and all the way to my workshop/wheelchair hahaa

Of course these belts aren't available in Australia and i don't have a spare, Matt.P again to the rescuce as the mob that makes these don't accept paypal only credit card. These belts are fiberglass reinforced neoprene, Autobot-Miles.. .would you know of any 5mm HTD or GT2 belts in the 1235mmx15mm length/width made up of different (stronger) materials possibly? This is the one i am using

https://sdp-si.com/eStore/PartDetail.asp?Opener=Group&PartID=75539&GroupID=342

Spoke to two Gates agents on the elcapone today apparently the smallest belt that Gates list is a 1250mm length, i miiiiight get away with it either way of course no stock local am awaiting a call back from the agent too see if they have supply in the Eastern States (im not too confident)

I also picked up some 3mm aluminium sheet today, some Devcon and 12x6mmx25mm Stainless steel button head caps screws to make and fit some sides on the rear pulley. With this rear hub not slipping like the 3 speed i have to run HUGELY tight belt setup tpo prevent any slip as a result it randomily spits a belt off, the pulley originally had sides i removed them when
i broke a section from one, not a big job to cut some sides and affix with bolts and devcon and it will eliminate the belt issue. I didn't have this problem withe the 3 speed as it would crack and slip the gears not allowing full power take offs, now theres no slip it is insane off the line, the RC ESC is working brilliantly now i can give it slightly more throttle off the line and not worry about the 3 speed clunking and complaing, sorry too say GWhy but the RC Esc for my on road riding, is no longer an issue in the slightest mate :D (aside from the pesky 44v limit of course...)

Anywayz...be a few weeks wait for a belt i guess...shall post some pics of the modifications i do of the rear pulley sides though, i may even put some on the front pulley its never come off the front pulley though so ..... will see.

Thanks again for the positive comments people, shall be back soon with pulley mods...

Hi Kim,

Nearest length for Gates PowerGrip GT3 5M is 1150mm. You can get them down to 350mm.........

GT and HTD are different tooth profiles for 5mm pitch, but pretty close........

Have a look here:

http://walther-flender-gruppe.com/antriebsriemen.0.html

http://www.gates.com/australia/index.cfm?location_id=3805

The other course is to upgrade the drive to 8mm pitch............ :)

No Worries mate, I pleased to hear its all working for you. It maybe a good job that your not using a sensored controller, the launch power is so much more intense maybe the belt would have given up a long time ago  .

p.s Love the bike

Thanks Miles...8mm pitch might be the best option long term i think...Matt.P has ordered a pair of the same belts im using now
i am hoping when in new condition they will be upto the job, if not i have a back up spare belt to see me through to a large
pitch upgrade...

Rodgah
...it was full power i came out of the corner cracked the throttle open
and bam...Was pulling at its hard when it broke. New belt and the sides on the rear pulley to ensure it stays
put 100% of the time and we is good to go again i thinkz... If not...8mm pitch belt setup here we come...with increase to 66v
it will likely be only option i guess...time will tellz...Damn blast to ride though i must say hehehe

KiM

If the rest of the belt looks like new, and shows no signs of failing/damage, then the failure was likely from one of those events during the build that tweaked on the belt a bit and caused localized damage that lead to the failure.

You may still be just fine with this size/type of belt. :)

Hi AJ,
I'm one of the MANY silent admirers of your work and now I'm jumping in to add something useful ( maybe :) )
In RC-car world they use adjustable torque limiting slip-clutches beside the current limit of the controllers.
It's nothing more than two round plates pressed together by a center spring ( or circular set of springs ). One plate is connected to the shaft, the other to the pulley. Done :D
It would be no big deal to add this feature to the biggest pulley on Mr. Recumpence gear_work_of_art.

-Olaf
BTW: Do you think the belt cracked because you where pulling full power out of a corner? Maybe you have too much flexing in the rear suspension and the belt tension was bigger on the outside than inside?
Uneven tension kills a belt faster than anything.

<edit> I took a closer look on your rear pulley: Would it be helpful to make a 'swimming' connection between pulley and wheel? The tail wiggling ( if any ) would be more or less eliminated to the driveline.

Yes, for sure. You're probably well over the maximum total span tension recommended for M5.

Indeed...shall be looked into when the new motor goes in and it sees 66v...i actually already have pulley from a go kart
here i can use just need a front pulley for the reduction drive, of course the issue maybe clearance between frame and wheel...Shall
exhaust all avenues with belt setups, worst case scenario can go chain drive that'll knock the problem on the head but will be
a final solution i love the silence of the belts getz to hear the screams of the motor better sounds so sweet
at full throttle  I can actually cruise in relative silence upto about 30 km/hr soon as the motor gets upto
~3/4 speed its starts to sing...

olaf-lampe
no chance theres an rear end flex in the frame guaranteed that, slipper clutch...mmm think beefing up is the better option
here, build it so it don't break LoL... Shall see how it pans out, i never got to test this hub in the bike when first assembled so it was an unforeseen thing i wasn't able to put this sort of power down from standing start before due to the 3 speed hub,. Cheers for the input mate appreciate the suggestions

Probably no flex in the frame, but how about the rim?
Did your read my edit?

Cheers
Olaf

Sorry i missed the edit mate was off having dinner  .. good point too
shall put it in the note book for consideration if I have further issues after the planned mods...

Thanks again :)
