Hello I have a cheap folding bike that I use for commuting and I love everything about it except it lacks a bit of power .the stock bike came with 12.5ah 48v battery but I managed to get a 17ah 52volt battery from Amazon that fits in the frame perfectly. On my first ride this morning the bike performed well I could notice my top speed went up by 3kph and felt a bit more torque. But about 15 minutes into the ride with heavy on/off throttling and peddling until I hopped over a speed bump and when the front end came down everything shut off(may be a coincidence)

I checked the motor and battery were not hot and tried to power up but nothing . Checked all connectors were good and After about 5 minutes I was able to power up again but it cut out after another 2 minutes .

From reading other posts it seems this may be a bms issue ? Is it possible that the controller or display is causing the issue ? I’m looking at upgrading the controller and display but if the battery is the issue I would prefer to deal with that first . Being an in frame battery there aren’t many options for replacement

Thanks for any help !

Yes I did that but wasn’t able to test it for the same distance trip yet as I was working. If it was a connection issue I think I would have been able to power up right away but I had to wait 5 minutes each time it shut off before it would power back on . Maybe just luck that it shook itself back into place. I will charge the battery fully and just ride around my block full throttle to see if It happens again and try to rule out the loose connection first.

It could be the BMS, or a short downstream from the battery tripping the BMS. It could also be a bad cell group in the battery pack that is tripping the BMS under load due to voltage sag. You might want to take advantage of Amazon’s return/exchange policy if you don’t see any problems in you wiring.

Ok thanks for the advice it’s greatly appreciated . I will check everything out and if need be I will get a refund .

Do you have a display or a way to monitor the battery voltage while testing it? That could provide info on whether the battery can keep up with your throttle hand. Check the resting voltage, then the voltage going full throttle, and maybe up a grade.

My display doesn’t have voltage just percentage unfortunately. Another thing I forgot to mention is they sent the wrong charger so I never fully charged it with a 52v charger only a 48v charger which said it was charged as soon as I plugged it in. I can’t remember what the display showed for battery charge I think it was around 80% but not sure . I reached out and they are sending the correct charger .

I think I’m going to upgrade the controller and display as long as I have a good battery. I understand the battery meters are generally not accurate. This is what’s on the bike currently I was looking at upgrading to this for a little more power. They confirmed the controller is good for 52v Any thoughts ?
