VW 'Volkswagen Uses Software to increase Pollution'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortality_rate
Where are you getting that from- and what percentage would that be statistically? Like naught- and look at the countries with the most deaths

Besides the fact we (human) know nothing about death, and very little about anything else :p -Ridiculous.

Not to say naturally we shall eliminate bloodthirst and environmental destruction, but wholly cow, don't spank the lemmings- show them the way. For without drastic control structure changes, 'progress' is just lightly veiled steps in the wrong direction. There are far bigger fish (that actually matter) than the everyday citizen, or even little corps like vw

Not that any news or media is worth the 0101010's composing it:

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/16/health/air-pollution-deaths-rising/

WHO claims something like 3Million premature human deaths this year related to breathing an atmosphere poisoned by folks into burning things (not that I trust the WHO or any group). The lowest estimate I found was 500k people, somewhere between those numbers might be ball park.

For some, killing and contributing to the suffering of millions of beings is OK. For others, we can use the plentiful cheap solar panels available today and EV's.

California gives them a bit over a month for a fix or they are cooked for thanksgiving. :p

50 million in clean energy credits and 800 million in tax subsidies are also in peril of clawbacks. The crap just keeps on building.

They are still not coming fully clean possibly. They may be completely run out of US market if this is found out the hard way.

30,000 deaths per year in the UK are due to NOx affecting all age groups according to King's College London with London making up almost a third of that. And you be sure that it is transport that is causing the bulk of those deaths and road-based transport at that where the fumes are highest concentrated at the height were people breathe.

The population of the UK is officially 64 million. The population of Europe is 742 million. The approximate deaths caused by NOx is therefore roughly 340,000 people killed every year mostly due to transport pollution. And diesel is the most immediate threat that needs to be removed.

As for the climate change/local pollution denier(s) looking for evidence for the above - well that's what search engines are for.

That's an interesting development if diesels from other manufacturers are also exceeding NOx limits and not just U.S. ones but European ones as well.

Lung cancer is scary and people care about local air quality.
I am pretty dubious of this point of view, most folks feel like they 'know' diesel because its been around so long. Their gut shot view of the world tells them its the last thing thats going to kill them. At the top of the list is something nuclear.
Even if you gave them a little science fact sheet to read while sitting out in the sun drinking some coca-cola and a burger while smoking a cig the attitudes and habits are so well baked into us that only the law makers can have any effect.

I agree, people en-masse rarely act rationally, and that includes assessing health risks, with what happens to b in the media having a big influence. Well, that might turn out to be diesel emissions at the moment. It would tie in with intuition and everyday observation: diesel vehicles are common in Europe and you can often see plumes of black smoke being emitted from these vehicles. They're visibly dirty, the smoke actually stinks and if you get a god lungful, it does make you cough. I don't think it would take a lot for people to think "that's not just dirty but harmless soot". I think being able to blame lung cancer on diesel emissions would also appeal to a lot of cigarette smokers.

I have always thought that the role for diesel is heavy equipment and transport only.

VW has hurt the diesel car industry irreparably IMO. It is a good start and a blessing in the form of a huge industrial / management blunder. Time has come to rid ourselves of this archaic technology in a expedient and orderly manner. This will certainly add wind to the sails of change.

Love this bumper sticker. "VW, German for FU". http://fortune.com/2015/10/09/volkswagen-owners-vw-sham/

Even in China VW has recalled diesels. 1900 units. Mainly symbolic.

MUCH Bigger than just the US.

Recalls ordered in Germany. 2.4 million cars to start. Italy next? 2016 cars fitted with additional cheat systems! 30 plus managers implicated.

It is morally right to use fossil fuel, and that is explained in the podcast. Feel free to broaden your world view :)

This year, somewhere between 0.5Million to 3.3Million humans and who knows how many other animals die as a result of poisoned air quality from humans burning things.

Feel free to broaden your awareness of the massive scale pointless death and suffering that arises. You are welcome to choose millions of pointless human deaths and suffering of 10's of millions to be a morally right thing in your reality.

ATB,
-Luke

I appreciate your contribution to the electric technology, but I don't support numbers taken out of thin air without any proof(edit, saw you provided a source, will check it out, sorry). And I also see that you did not listen to the podcast, since you would not dare to say that nonsense after hearing it. Please take responsibility for what you spread of misleading information.

It's a horrible blow to the environment, and also a large trust issue for VW. The entire German economy is taking a hit because of it.

It just keeps getting worse for VW. Raid France also. http://www.ibtimes.com/volkswagen-diesel-emissions-scandal-update-2015-police-raid-french-vw-headquarters-2145537

They have several defeat systems implemented. http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/10/19/volkswagen-emissions-software-idUSL8N12J1AF20151019 volkswagen-emissions-software-idUSL8N12J1AF20151019

Not a chance this happened with just a few engineers. This was a systemic CHEAT by them and the fix is going to hurt a bit.

I gotta wonder about Scientific American when one of their writers describes nitrogen dioxide as "ozone".

Agree, Greed is what got VW into this mess to begin with. Now the coverup is always what gets you. Criminal charges coming on missing docs. http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/oct/21/german-state-files-criminal-complaint-after-vw-file-disappears

Greed for fuel efficiency on VW's part? Because that's what it looks like to me. Maybe bragging rights and status as the vehicle that exceeds consumer expectations. Good for business, sure. But not GM-level scammery by a mile.

I don't know who's served by forcing VW into a regime that makes their cars burn more petroleum, other than petroleum producers and refiners. All petro-burning cars stink and give people cancer, and to believe otherwise is only denial.

This singling out of VW is only a net win if it results in fewer cars overall on the road.

cannot blame a business for wanting to keep down costs for customers, minimize its costs, and maximise its returns to investors.
That is what Directors are employed to do.
... but now all those who were benefiting from a successful business, are turning to buzzards wanting to rip the financial guts out of the VW carcase .
Pure first world greed all round..even a buddy of mine who is very happy with his VW TDI, and accepts its not exceeding the local emissions, has joined a class action...just because he can , and there is the possibility of some compensation !
