When I let off the throttle, regen braking comes on at the point where throttle would be just coasting. The amount of braking force increases to full force as I back the throttle to zero. The regen braking cuts off below about 10kph, so now I only use by brakes for stronger stopping or to come to a complete stop.
I don't see why the sensorless version wouldn't work the same. It lacks the confidence inspiring feel of the throttle on a gasser, but I'm sure electrics will become more refined in that regard. I wonder how the throttle feels on those multi-thousand dollar ebikes. I bet they miss the mark widely too.
On the little race weight bike I built, I can report that the throttle regen saved me from ending up on my back multiple times. I did make a half-a$$ed effort for a few minutes to ride a wheelie, but never came close. I think a current control throttle would help.
