I really want to join stuff like hang glide and paraglide.

The thing about paragliding is that it's a huge up front cost, but essentially "free" after that... just transportation costs really. The gear will last you for many, many years if cared for properly. I paid around $5,000 for my whole setup including all the gizmo extra gadgets like Flytec variometer and GPS and such that aren't really that necessary. I got my rig in 2000 and sold the whole thing in 2006 for $2,250 after flying the snot out of it so it holds it's value pretty well also. It's an incredibly addicting activity, but it's not agro unless you want it to be. Soaring in lazy, fat thermals with local hawks at 22mph thousands of feet over the ground on a sunny afternoon is pretty close to heaven.

I would advise NOT cheaping out on flying gear... it is your life you're talking about here and you'll be bummed if you die from buying shitty gear. Don't even think about ebay etc. Go through a reputable flying school.

Start here: http://www.ushpa.aero

Good luck and be safe! Paragliding is 94% personal judgement, 3% weather, 2% luck and 1% skill.

I saw this and thought of this thread....

That's one cool pic !!!.

I've been attacted by one of those Red Winged Blackbirds before, drove my ebike down a country road too close to the nest which I'm assuming was close to the road in the Katydids. The damn bird dive bombed me 5 or 6 times and got me on the top of my head once until I got far enough away from it's nest ..... Reminded me of that old Alfred Hitchcock movie at the time.

Other hobbies besides PDN( practicing doing nothing)

Growing tomatoes and brewing beer.

Tomatoes in colorado springs are a real challenge.... especially getting early production.

so starting an A-frame greenhouse is added to the list.

We are already harvesting tomatoes. Hope to keep this up to thanksgiving. some heirlooms, some otherwise.

Last year we harvested 20 pounds most weeks. fed 10 families.

I also putz with solar ovens.. really amazing.

Yea the only tomatoes I grow are the heirloom/heritage.The growing season here is from endo May to Mid October. All grown with either cow or sheep shit and no pesticides .A few years back I had a tomato grow to around a kilo in weight and was the size of my nephew's head.

Last year got hit by the Tomato Horn Worm, ate the plants so fast I thought the neighbour was pissed off at me and chopped down the plants with some hedge cutters.I was clued in by not seeing any clippings laying about...Them buggers can eat 1/2 of a plant a day.

I've been Hang gliding since the early 1990's. But only foot launching, no towing. But, With high gas prices, towing is looking better all the time as an alternative to driving 2-3 hours to the ridges - although we thankfully have closer places to fly too.

Nothing outstanding to brag about - best cross country flight 46 miles, longest duration 4.25 hours; best altitude: 10,700 feet in Shenandoah Valley wave lift, or 9500 feet in thermals. (pretty good for eastern US).

But between the EV's, the old house, age, and bemoaning the sorry state of things, I'm flying less and less all the time. Never thought it would happen!

Amazing the number of home brewers here. I did a few batches way back - brewing before brewing was cool.

But now, there is much good local microbrew around that I feel the basic mission - availability of good beer in the USA, has been accomplished, so I just drink it in bars.

Anything to do with electronics. I wish I had a spectrum analyzer. I also enjoy science, especially astronomy. lizards. Here's some pictures of my Bearded Dragon, He's over 10 years old!

I grew up in Pittsburgh and a couple years ago when visiting home I had coffee one morning with Pete Lehmann asking him about the paragliding options in western PA. I have no doubt you've not only heard of him, but have likely flown with him. :)

Other hobbies:

Metal work (sheetmetal and knives), organic gardening, electronics (ham radio -- especially extreme longwave), cooking and baking, brewing/winemaking/meadmaking, collecting and restoring antique gas, kerosene and other pre-electric lighting, and collecting vintage telegraph equipment.

At the moment, trying to get medieval on a tribe of gophers that's eating our potato crop.

I realize things practically don't rust in much of the US seeing how there's ancient 20 year old cars that still run, but that thing looks wrong to me without extensive rust everywhere, especially heater channels all opened up along the bottom of the doors.

I am an RC car and plane junkie. All electric.

I used to have a ton of fishtanks, but couldn't keep up with them so I just have a 40 gal and a 75 gallon now. My beta loves having the run of the 40 gallon

Otherwise, I have been building bikes since grade school and riding bikes without training wheels since I was 4. My brother got his taken off (5 years older than I), so I thought I was too old for training wheels too.

I also like to spend lots of time outdoors, even though I have become an internet junkie. Hiking around the woods is great.

My best friend grows hops, so we brew beer together. He is the brewmaster and I am his helper.

For home entertainment I have a HT with 108" widescreen, a set of turntables, and I play the guitar. I also knit and crochet hats for the wintertime

Too many hobbies.

Little time so little time - so often I feel like the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.

When I get time (commuting by e/bike) - I love to listen to music on my Sony ... some consider 2-hours return trip as along commute. For me it means I get to enjoy quality music that I want to listen to. Lot of fun selecting from my collection when loading the player - do we feel likes Doors or Green Day to day :D

I love to ride motorcylces - health is not where it should be yet to get back on my bike a - 2001 VFR800 (great sports/tourier) - long fast country rides are a favorite - with Coltrane, Pink or Nightwish filling my helmet. So 4 now the bike - sits in the garage - occasional start up & buff. Every so often - something nice comes up on EBay & eventually ends up on Viffer.

I cook - practically anything (except cakes) - I'm a bit of a health junkie, but it must taste good & love to teach my daughters the art of cooking- from preparing hunted meat, home made sausages to a fine greek salad - nothing is off limits.

Wine - lucky to live in OZ - their is so many quality wines to pick from (see above re: long country rides) - only have limited cargo space on the bike for wines & some fine cheeses found on trekking. But a lot of fun.

S/F - fan. Love Battlestar (new remake), Heros & many others....I'm a bit nerdie - like my what if movies.
Reading & Gaming - Sci/Fantasy - not much time for either - so kind a picky as to what I play & read.

Ebay - hunting.....this is sad - but I do enjoy hunting down the bargain - snabbing the item & waiting for delivery (almost like Xmas) - Told u this was sad

Taking the kids riding - XC about once a month depending on weather & work

Pretty much thats about it - though a low maintenance herb garden is in the process of being planted ... :D .
Kids get to name the plants & therefore own them ------means that if die because they were hand watered - I'll know which once did not do her chores

Ah yes, cooking. Although I cook often and love to make bread, I don't really consider it a hobby for some reason. It is more of an important part of living!
