I am looking for a fairly bomb proof set of rims, DH width, I would prefer if it is setup as a wheelset with a quality hub and spokes. I have a 3 speed internal gear hub for the back, so the front is my main concern for a complete package while I will prolly have to build the rear. The project is a Full Suspension GT I Drive frame which will use a decent triple clamp front fork with disk brakes and the rear will rely on rim brakes ( who needs disks when it never rains). I will be putting in the nieghborhood of 4KW through the wheel if that helps with a single stage Astro drive.

I have been all over JensonUSA and found the following in my price bracket. It seems cheaper to buy a wheelset and the sell the rear hub or switch it over to my other bike. Are these any good?

I am looking for suggestions, what do you guys use? Do I need to get unicycle rims? What about 24" mags? Total budget under $200.
Thanks for any help here

The DX28's are not DH width
I run a SAS Halo rear wheel with 48 spokes, 14 ga. spokes and the rim is 36mm wide. It uses stainless steel double eyelets and is a box section rim that can be used with rim brakes. They make them in 36 hole so you can use your 3 speed hub. Get a pro builder to build up the wheel for you, let them know what you are doing so they can make it as strong as possible.

I'll be keen to see what is suggested here i too am in the market for a front heavy duty rim, i have been leaning towards moped tires, i cant seem to find the rim in picture (or any rims for that matter on the site...)

p.s do you require the 20mm axle?

best wheelset I know for DH is the Sun Ringle A.D.D. http://www.sun-ringle.com/
They use the MTX33 rims and there DH hubs, 14 guage spokes. Truely awesome and compitition proven by most of the DH teams, but its more expensive than you want and not what you need.

when I built my wheels, I followed a similar plan, using MTX Welded (34mm, like the MTX33s but welded seam, so stronger) and DT swiss black 14 guage spokes, but I went with a basic sealed Steel bearing Shimano MTN bike Hub since i had a conventional dropout. The Rim was $60, the spokes $50, and the hub $29.

The wheelsets you had listed are.. acceptable, but there are better. Shimano doesn't make the best rims, although their hubs are first class, and Sun doesn't do the best hubs, although they make some of the best rims. The width of those is a bit thin, as well.

Thanks for the help guys. I have been doing alot of research and have decided to build my own wheelsets. I guess I am about to discover the joys of lacing a rim! So I see that 28 mm is too narrow for what I want, so I am leaning toward either some Alex dx-32's or or Sun Ringle Rhyno Lites. I also like the Halo rims out of the UK, but I don't want to pay th premium price that dollar conversion creates. The WTB Laserdisc rims look to be decent as well. Azonic also makes some very good looking rims, but I am not sold on the performance of these (anodized sure would be nice though huh). Please keep the suggestions coming as I have not made a decision yet.

That Surly rim is quite large, you can see it in action on the Pugsly. I don't want to go that big though. Might be extremely heavy too.

I found a few images to find what I am truely looking for in a rim. I wish an engineer in this sort of thing could tell me which shape is the strongest. If you go to some of these sites they will show you the crossection of the rim and from that one could look at the design and tell me whether it should exhibit more strength than another.
