When is your first snowfall?

This next few years will be interesting.

With the lack of Sun spots and some scientist saying this can effect the weather here on Earth, it will be interesting to see if this theory plays out.

Hi N & V;

God I hope we don't get snow anytime soon! But then again, we are just south of 49th parallel here on Saltspring Island.

The metal roofing on the new workshop is only about 50% done and we just got the titanium underlayment down on the house roof today.

It has been mostly T-shirt weather this last week, but that too is supposed to change to rain next week.

Last winter the first snowfall was Dec. 12th and hung around on the ground continuously until mid March. We do happen to live 1000 ft up a mountain here, but it was still unusual.

Hopefully the predicted El Nino this winter will bring a warmer winter for us, doesn't sound like it is helping you out too much so far.

Cheers Greg

Would a trike be any better in the snow or would you just get hung up?

I'm imagining that you can ride in the tire tracks with a bike.

Chime in when you see snow where you are.
If I have to wait for snow to chime in, I'll have to stay silent forever. ;)
It will probably get cold enough for water to freeze overnight, and we *might* get sleet or hail, but snow? Nope. :(

Heck, I'm just happy the days are no more than around 85F, and the nights are finally getting down to mid-50s F by dawn.

Having never lived...rephrase that...having never even seen snow up close, whats the general consensus from all the inhabitants when it comes to snow, do you actually like it? or is it something that you simply have to put up with? Given a choice if you could flick a switch would you prefer to go without it? I think i would like to experience it but not on a daily basis i feel it would get "old" real damn fast. Skiing and snowboarding etc would be fun obviously but when it comes to simple things like going to the corner store for milk and bread you seem to have to rug up like your on a North Pole expedition, thankfully a long sleeve t-shirt and on reeeeal chilly days a light jumper is as "rugged up" as i have to get in winter LoL.....brbrbrb makes me shiver just looking at some of the pics FrankG sends through to me in winter in North America!

Snow is fun to visit, but living in it is a big problem. To be clear, the cold doesn't bother me, I can adjust for cold weather. But when there's snow and ice on the ground the cars are very dangerous. YOU can be driving safely and carefully, but the people around you often seen suprised when they put on their brakes and the car keeps sliding, or you turn the wheel, and the car keeps going straight...(Though skiing was a lots of fun, when I had young knees)

N. E. Kansas (Central USA) expecting its first snow this week.

Just my opinion....

Snow makes walking around and working outside kinda a PITA. However, driving in the snow is an extreme pleasure my friend, and very much worth the troubles it causes. Ice on the roads = no good for anything. Fresh dry snow on the roads = Driving Nirvana. I bust out the AE86 and the F20C swapped 1969 datsun 510 (bluebird to an aussie I think?), and turn burning fuel into bliss until my cheeks ache from so much smileing. lol

We have had 3 days of 1/2" of snow already this october in colorado springs.

I have lived in places with some snow all my life; ozarks, chicago, boston, colorado.

I found the heat, humidity, tornados, mesquitos, and chiggers much worse than some occaisonal snow.( and you still got snow in the midwest).

Every place I have seen (except some REAL HIGH cost of living areas) has either snow or extreme heat. Tried Arizona, but the summer is unbearable to me. Some Good friends moved from colorado to florida, they came back to Colorado after just ONE Florida summer. I will take the snow.

For 20 years I would go snow skiing in the winter. Cross country skiing in the northern midwest, downhill in Colorado. Now I just save my money for a winterbird trip to a warm place. I must say that snow skiing was a gas! Constantly either on Adrenalin or Endorphins. (AND Every lady looks gorgeous with a ski jacket on) But a youngster's sport, not for people that heal slowly if injured.

The cold and snow really shortens our growing season, but a greenhouse would help that. We dont have killer bees or much termites here- the severe freeze takes them out.

The Snow doesnt hurt the cycling, i dont cycle below 40F anyway. Plus the car drivers are not prepared to see a bicycle in the winter.

I walk and take the bus a lot in the winter. Lots of places; LIbrary, 3 Pubs, 8 cafes, 3 coffee shops, h/w store, 3 groceries, Walgreens, cheap health club/spa, are within 1.5 miles. Sometimes I will walk in a Blizzard for groceries just because I can.

When I lived in the hot humid midwest, I would sweat like crazy. Had to constantly change clothes and take showers- several times a day. Jumping indoors into the A/C in the summer. Had to time my activities so as to be indoors most of the day; could not enjoy many outdoor activities; heat in the day, bugs in the evening.,

In the winter, all I do is wear the right clothes and I am comfy walking. In the hot or humid summer I just cant enjoy the outdoors much. (silk long johns are great).

So I take a little snow so I can enjoy the rest of the year.

One problem--Cold beer is not as good in the winter.

Nelson New Zealand.

Never had a snowfall below 300meters as far as I know. It gets cold at nights in winter, there will be frosts and sometimes (once every few years) frozen ponds. I used to wear shorts (school uniform) even midwinter. It would be cold, but not so cold that it was worth pestering my parents for the long pants uniform that not many wore.

Summer weather is mid 20's-low 30's most days and the temperature drops at nights so if you go for a ride in the morning, you'll still need a windproof jacket on. No humidity problems 95% of the time.

And it's not all that expensive to live there, though it's popular for retirees for some reason.

Best weather in the world.

I just had some snow this past year, so I do not expect to see it again for another decade or so....

Well it sure got cold fast here in southeastern Wisconsin. The first 3.5 weeks of Septemeber were terrific but now we're getting close to freezing overnight. We normally don't get any significant snow accumulation until late November/early December but ya never know the weather varies greatly from year to year as does snowfall. Here is the annual snowfall for Milwaukee since they started keeping records;

The last two winters we've seen much higher than normal snowfalls with two years ago having the second highest on record.

Like most people as a kid I absolutely loved winter but now I simply put up with it. A fresh blanket of the white stuff can be quite beautiful and even fun to drive in...if you're the only one on the road and you're not trying to get somewhere otherwise it's a royal pain in the butt. I'll take cold over snow any day but when the two team up, big snowfalls followed by bitter cold, then life becomes a real drag and spring, now my favorite season, can't come too quickly.

Interesting, the exact same thing happened to eastern Washington with last year being the highest on record.

i actually enjoy snow because its a seasonal thing. but as liveforphysics said, its a pain if you travel on foot. nothing like a good old snowball fight either.

hardly ever snows here in the winter, but it rains alot. I grew up in Rochester, NY and moved here to get away from the snow and I don't miss it one bit

Cheers to all that gave their opinions on the snow having never experienced the white stuff let alone living in it i can only imagine the everyday sacrifices and compensations that would need to be made, you have all given me a lil more insight into the cold winter environment... i guessed it would be pretty much as outlined by the majority, if your young dont work and heal quick its a blast ...as you get older you start to feel the cold more an it turns into more of a inconvenience than a "fun" thing you once looked forward to as a youngster ... Personally its one thing i regret i never got to experience before i lobbed in a wheelchair, i would have loved to have tried snow skiing and snow boarding...but never liked the idea of actually 'living' for months in the cold thats associated with the snow. This is as bad as it getz in Winter where im from in the West of OZ-->
