Nice wheel! Where’s the rest of it!

My latest build is a lightweight short range eMTB. I live very close to a hill with approx 300m vertical climb, and some great rocky trails for going downhill. You have to lift the bike over fences in places, so I wanted something light, mid drive for climbing and not too powerful so I could get away with a small battery.

This way I can do one climb up the hill at lunchtime, fang it back down at high speed and then back home for the next zoom meeting.

Enter a cheap used bafang Bbs01 (15A, 750W) and a 13s1P (yes just 1p!) VTC6A 21700 home made pack, for a 4AH battery. Works fine, both motor and battery get warm after a long climb using throttle but not too bad. The PAS is fine if a little slow to disengage. last pic is of the battery mid build, it was extensively taped up with rigid plastic covering all electrodes and then foam taped in place inside the box so nothing rattles or moves. not great for heat dissipation but oh well.

That's quite a battery! Where do you like to ride? Long distances? Is the bike comfortable for long distance?

Can't tell anything about the range yet, because i just finished the build, but my intention is to use the bike as my daily commuter (street) and occasional mild trail riding (forest).

No before pics, it was just some spare parts i had laying around. Old khs frame, 20s6p vtc4 battery, shunt modded chinese ,controller pushing ~130A, Laced up a 16" dirt bike rim onto a 45h NBE motor, frocker rips.

Another build...more like a little upgrade, but it turned out so much nicer than the stock eBike. The frame is steel, so it was worth salvaging.

The Blue Goose got boosted with a CYC Photon and a 52V LiPoly battery. It's a TerraTrike Cruiser not in production, I have enjoyed it for years.
Before conversion, I dropped to a 20" drive wheel because the hills were getting too steep. After conversion I could go back to the 26" wheel and conquer the steepest hills around here. The ammo box was the best fit for the large LiFePO4 battery. Chrome cruiser fenders replace the original plastic ones that shattered after I rolled the trike. Good times!

My plan is take the Grin kit off my $30 donor Ponderosa FS, and put it on a new to me Giant XTC $50 donor.

The above bike is/was a really great ebike, but, as fate would have it, I now have this 22 year-old state-of-the-art full suspension mountain bike:

So I guess that's my before picture. My after picture is a week or two away. No bicycles are permanently damaged in my experiments.
 
Will it ever be finished? Just retrofitted my old 07 YETI 575, Changed battery location from bottom tube underside ( has cage bosses there) to rear old man mountain rack. Had the frame hanging in garage. Well…. the rest is history. Future, OMM Elkhorn front rack, with molle panel and bow mounts, Tactical hunting rig. Third from Last photo was the original build, purchased in 08. Second to last photo, zoom in on upper shock mount is cracked (reason why frame was hung up)Last photo, grind and fill with aluminum flux core brazing rod, melting point does not exceed anneal temp. Starting to micro crack. Final fix? laminate al sheet with high strength al epoxy to both sides of shock mount. Long term reliability?

Why on earth did you change the battery location from te best (low, middle, suspended) to the worst (high, rear, unsuspended)...?
DO NOT LIKE LOW BATTERY POSITION LIMITED FORK TRAVEL, YES THE FORKS ARE ADJUSTABLE, BUT STILL TIRE RUB ON BATTERY AND RISK OF CRASHING SPEED CONTROLLER GOING OVER ROCKS. RIDES FINE RACK STIFFENS THE A FRAME, RACK RIDES WITH SUSPENSION. IT LOOKED COOL THE WAY IT WAS BUT NOT PRACTICAL TACTICAL….

No need to shout in all caps, I can read you just fine.

By placing the battery pack on the rear fork/swing arm you have put all the weight of the pack right above the rear axle. As it is mounted stiff to the fork it will get all the beating that the wheel does as it is unsprung/not suspended (only by the tire) in that location. I hope the battery pack (cells and BMS) will survive that dynamic load and not break down (or burst into flames).

Hopefully the thin aluminum fork doesn't crack under the load as it was never designed to carry a rack/battery that heavy. And the extra weight really doesn't do the suspension travel of the rear fork any good either.
