Slo Ride

I really like the look of this bike other than it not having suspension, but I am seriously considering getting one anyway!
Yeah, and this is actually within the realm of what you said you want to use the machine for - bicycle speeds.

The website states "30-50Km/h" max speed - with a 500W powertrain, the lower end of that is more probable, but with no suspension, you'd hardly want to ride faster anyway. Sounds reasonable enough for what it is if you want a relaxed chopper for casually moving around.

Yeah I really like the look but there are several issues that make me hesitate. You know the funny part is I'll likely never use more than 25% of the power 99.9% of the time on the bike I'm trying to build.
 
The only reason I'm posting here is that I'm seriously concerned you might just take a $600 Chinese chopper bicycle with no suspension, strap a giant controller and a 24kW motor to it and try going fast and that's a genuine safety concern. If that thing ever got to 160km/h it's very likely that it would be your last trip ever.

LMAO You have no idea some of the crazy stuff I've pulled off or some of the speeds I've been! But no I have no desire what so ever to die any sooner than I have too! My personal fastest radar clocked speed was 244mph in a 75 mustang I built in the 80's. I can almost certainly say that's the fastest I've been on wheels.

You know back in my 20's & 30's I thought sure I'd die going 200 mph in a fiery crash while racing. In fact I had many dreams back then about launching my camaro with it's regular 1.19 second 60ft time or the 1.11 second 60ft time with full power, thankfully that never happened. One time I tickled the NOS at the finish line and stood the car on it's rear bumper at 144mph, I thought sure I was dead that time. You know how people say time slows when you face death head on? Well it slowed so much that day it felt like I had taken all year to figure out what to do before I crashed. I didn't crash I held the throttle to the floor and the NOS engaged and slowly applied the brakes and gently brought the front end back down without any damage at all! It was the most intense day of my life! I have NO desire to get that close to death again.
 
While I think others are right you will need to find where you want to be on the bicycle-motorcycle spectrum and choose parts accordingly for things like load ratings I think that's been covered decently well by others.

The issue I think you need to consider is the gearing and running of that motor, I don't think it's going to be as powerful as you think, not unless you intend to melt it. That motor is rated at 24Kw at 20K RPM and only at 20K RPM. Anything less you won't be able to push that much power or the related phase amps. So if you want to get real power you of course need to consider gearing and KV and battery voltage to make sure you can get there with probably a lot of headroom, that is to make 24kw at 20K RPM the no load speed, so KV times voltage, will have to be way higher than 20K RPM. Phase amps is the other factor and figuring out that depends on Kv and various other motor parameters we would be guessing at without more motor data but it's probably well below 400A before you saturate the core.

Thanks! I'm trying to build something unique here not a speed demon but something fun & comfortable with a huge battery (a minimum of 100AH) for long distance. I'm also trying to add solar power and wind fairing in the build. I want that laid back cruiser ride comfort with modern power and no noise. The gearing will be between 10 and 12 to 1 to try and let the motor work as it should. The bike I have now has 2) 1,000 watt hub motors and I generally only run the rear motor unless I need the front motor on account of mud / sand or steep hills. I mostly ride between 13 and 23 mph sometimes I'll kick it up to 28 if I'm in a rush. I plan to ride this build mostly at 20-28 if the aerodynamics work out. I also want the ability to go off road not off pavement and fly from time to time if you know what I mean.
I am not very good with electronics, programs or computers but I am pretty good with mechanical.

Just wanting to see if my understanding here is correct. Yes the motor may make 24,000 watts at 20,000rpm but doesn't it build up to that on a fairly straight line from 0-20,000rpm? Unlike a combustion engine which would have a much more curved line. What I'm trying to make sure I'm correct in assuming is can't I set the controller on % of power? Ideally something like 10% power 99% of the time... Which just by the math without allowing for losses would be 2,400 watts = roughly 3.2hp, correct? Which should easily let me run 20-28mph continuously with a bit of room to spare. Or am I thinking about this all wrong?
 
Yes you can just run it at 2400w continuously with pretty mild cooling but you do want to gear the motor accordingly to use those watts efficiently and phase amps is really what you should be setting in the controller which will sort of do that ramp up in power at what the motor can handle.

I'd reconsider removing it. You tried, and that counts for something; and it's still a valuable resource, at least as much as the successful projects. I'm thankful for you posting the progress even if you didn't reach your goals this time. Care to share a post-mortem?

Decided to go another direction since the powers that be have started cracking down on fast e-bikes and they are trying to outlaw them here in VA. Praying they fail!

I'm still going to use all the parts just not for a fast bike. Likely going to build a little UTV using the parts. I can use one around the farm.
