Alien Drive Systems- Stunt scooter from scratch

The E-Scoot modular body has arrived from the fabricator..not bad work for a prototype..
All Alloy super super light but strong.. Loads of space for batteries and ESC placement..and a nice motor ..
Just add your own scooter parts..and the Remote throttle housing..
My only Dilema now is to powder coat in some crazy color , anododise or polish ...??? what do you think..??

Polish that thing! There are some nice welds on there, it would be a shame to cover them up. Do the handlebars fold? I need something like that for my scooter, but it has to fold.

of all the scooters i have ridden..whenever you add a folding mechanism to the bars..it just becomes so unstable and loose..
I want this to be a rigid body.. like a stunt scooter.. but nearly as easy to to remove the bars..

its coming together nicely- its a rolling chassis at the moment - while i dry fit everything before i strip it for anodising..
Its supper solid yet nice and light..
loads of room for batteries..
I have the 6374 motor fitted and ill be running 12S -so it should fly!!!

Looking sweet man. I like the neck gusset/ esc housing very good idea. Where did you get the handlebar clamp. I need more rigidity in my front end but need it to fold. Your clamp looks like it's not too hard to remove the bars. Can't wait to see this thing running!

That's the main reason i built this thing. more room for electronics..and it actually made it quite easy to manufacture from folded flat plate..
well i have been asked many times about a folding front end..but every one i have ever ridden with a folding front end just felt loose and not at all rigid... this feels solid.

If you want to remove the bars..just walk with an allen key- undo 2 bolts and the bars slip straight out..

all the wheels/bars/forks/clamp are just off the shelf standard scooter parts..so really customisable

This looks freaking sweet!

What sort of weight are we talking in comparison to your earlier smaller wheeled unit?

I would definitely be keen on one of these for my in-town transportation. Friend of mine is really into the e-boards but I find I gravitate to something with bars :)

Generally I like things to be built so they're capable of ridiculous power and then detune to get the reliability/efficiency on a day to day basis with the option of turning it up when required, what's the current state of play with suggested motors/ESC's with that in mind?

Love your work :)

Hi
the weight of the scooter with everything fitted ..minus battery is 6KG..so pretty light weight..obviously depending battery combo you fit the weight will increase
Im going to use a 6374 motor and 8000mah 12s so should be a very nice ride..
you could even use 8S and 5065 motor with smaller 6/" wheels and that would still be a fast machine.. but a lot lighter..
My intention is to sell the body, motor bracket and the drive train to suit the wheels ..currently i have drive hubs for 5" and 6" skike and MBS |Rockstar pro and MBS rockstar II

and i'll make the 3d STL available for the remote handle bar mount
20151203_212050_zpsiulpqlrv.jpg

Ive had to use several different suppliers and workshops to get this made and i'm currently trying to get them to qoute for a small batch run...its a nightmare.. but at least i have one to show other shops..and i have the design now with just a few tweaks needed.
I really hope to be able to sell just the body for £150-200 or so..but i don't want to commit to price until i get quotes back-

its nearly ready for the first test run...and im quite excited.
Bruno has sent me the new style ESC that will take upto 12s and has BEC built in..its super slim and has nice fixing point to mount it...

Once i've ridden it and there's no more mods to do- ill strip it all and get it anodised and coated..

Been following your build. Your new ESC seems identical to TorqueBoards. Awesome ESC. I've used them on all my builds. I've also done what you've done, mounted a cooling fan on top of the heat sink. I found that the ESC could run as hot as 140* on 90 degree plus days. Adding the cooling fan drops the temp to ~120. One thing I did find by trial and error with the fan was the fan blade would break from the center area. After loosing 3 fans, I decided to try placing a dab of epoxy to the center area of the fan. Problem solved. It may not be a problem for you since the fan is sitting upright.

nice one.. i've rode Bruno's board with these ESC fitted and its really smooth..

ITS ALIVE!!!!!

I managed a couple of bench tests last night..first on 7S- which still seems pretty powerfull..

then on 12s ..which is just super powerful..I cannot wait for some dry weather now!!!

Awesome build man! I will start building one around christmas based on your design. I plan on recycling the parts from an electric beer crate racer project I did a few months ago, It was a very fun vehicle, but not very practicle  .

Parts I currently have:

MBS Pro wheels (purchased last week)
Kelly KBS36101L (big but awesome)
SK36364 190KV
Sensor board Equals0design.
2x 5s 5000mAH (plan on running 10s)
Power switch, wattmeter, wires etc.
Full grip throttle.

It will be difficult to fit the Kelly controller and a lot of batteries, so I think I will either upgrade the batteries to 8000mAH or make them very easy to swap. How do you plan on charrging the batteries, is the deck easy to remove or will you add a chargeport? The kelly controller gave me very good accelaration and overall performance so I'm still in doubt whether I should take a smaller controller or not.

I don't think a full grip throttle will be very safe or convenient on an electric scooter, so I think i will buy a thumb throttle. Or is it possible to create a wireless throttle like you did for a kelly controller, which also has regenerative braking?

The videos are still on private, so I was unable to watch them

Hi Benne
thanks- im really enjoying building it..its a break from building skateboards and my mini scooter is blast to ride..
I plan to install a BMS system for charging..im just waiting for it to arrive- in the meantime ill just charge as 2x 6S batteries..- the deck is easily removed with just 6 small screws holding it..
ive looked at many different configurations for the throttle mech..and i keep coming back to the simple trigger- its far safer and simple to use..
Im not really familiar with howw the kelly controller works - so im not sure if a wireless handset can be used.. that's the beauty of the RC ESC ..you can just use the PCB of any 2 channel controller..
I've made the videos public now..
I hope to have the Scoot body available to buy some time next year ..and you can customise to suit..125/150 mm wheels,200 mm wheels..5065 or 6374 motor .. any scooter bars or clamps..i can really see some awesome machines been built..:)

a very rough edit of my E-scoots first outing to the post office..with my son..
There's still a lot to be done on the gearing to get it perfect but its pretty fast now..and super rugged and it bunny hopes sweet...
weighs under 7KG..all in..
i've made a PCB housing and trigger mount for the Flysky Gt2b..easlily 3d printed.. it will do until the Alien remote arrives...

Hey Beetbocks
As much as I love my boards I must say I really like that scooter. As a commuter absolutely brilliant.
Was thinking of doing a MTB, such as the likes of okp and nowind (man, they are really cool) but actually think that such a scooter will come first.
It is just so practical and yet I am sure it is still great fun.
Problem with the MTB is that it is sure to interest the coppers more as they see instantly that it is motorised, I prefer to keep a low profile. ;o)

oh yeah the scooter is so much easier to ride and mount pavements..etc.. and much safer to use IMO.. espically with the foot brake aswell as e-brake
well i have ridden it all over my town and not seen one rozzer... its really down to how you ride it..keep it smooth and out of people way..and they don't bother you..
this latest version is a MGP dirt scooter- £99)(wheels/tires/ forks/ bars/clamp) added to my E-scoot body... so pretty simple to do..
the hardest bit is adding a nice remote control..
I am considering having a few bodies made to order ( i might do a pre-order ) but im not sure on what people think of them..
..and im also working on a slightly slimmer/smaller /lighter body size..with 8" wheels or even the 6" skike wheels ,8S battery and 5065 motor ..should drop the weight by over 2KG and make it look less electric,.and maybe grind able bottom...@:)

well..its certainly been a while since my last post- and i have been very busy and i have now got the 'big scoot' working perfectly..
some gearing changes from belt to 6mm chain (allows a higher reduction) and a ESC replacment ..and now i have a pocket rocket!!..its super powerful and still light weight and agile..at only 10kg with the largest 12S 10,000mah battery fitted..

Here we are having a leisurely ride through the park..:) these things will ride almost any terrain..compared to the skateboards..
we have discovered a track that flows really nicley..love it!!!
just need 10 more scoots some leather suits and a bit of racing action!! :)

and im not working on a 'small scoot' running 8s,5065 motor -New APS ESC and 6" skike wheels for my son
this is running a 5065 motor and is still pretty fast but weighs under 7kgs.. it bunny hops so good..

Looking good. Any plans to sell you scoot chassis or release drawings for us to recreate? My kid has been asking for one and I have a couple extra VESCs so I might as well build one for each of us.

I really like how you have integrated the charging solution to give balance leads out aswell as the xt90 and situated in a good place too, its a cracking chassis I like it alot.

Yes I maybe will sell the body's. .just fit your own electronics.
Yes on the small scoot. .charging is simple..The Xt90 plug is actually a kill switch not charging port.
I have a 12s BMS ready to fit to the big scoot. :)

I've been browsing ES for quite a while for inspiration and ideas.

I signed up today after years of surfing, your thread is phenomenal.

You have a guaranteed customer if you can sell me a body, with motor adapter, drive gears for £150 -£200 etc and all the info on where to get the rest of the stuff to get the scooter rolling!

I have the electrics sorted already, please let me know prices (if you can) ASAP

Im sure others have expressed interest too
