Best methods to secure ebikes in public?

Tonight, I've seen my bag has been opened by someone:

But for some reason, he didn't steal anything.

I wonder why

By chance, was it because they thought it was a bomb? lol

For extra anti-theft effect, fasten a paper with some serpentine-looking writing on top of the battery.

Is this in london?
If they didn't open the second package, they perhaps did think bomb. Imagine if you had returned to find bomb disposal blowing your bike up lol

Not much bike theft around here - still, the best plan is not to leave for more than a few minutes...
I have a keyswitch and different locks for different locations/situations:

1. A frame lock on front wheel for quick 3 minute rest stop on the bike path or to buy a beer bomber. It's always ready and locks the front wheel in 3 seconds. If it's not easy to use, skipping it 'just this once' is too tempting...
The only problem I have with these is that someone could still just grab the headset, lift up the front wheel and walk away with it to an out-of-sight area.
Well - as I mentioned, they are not meant to be mounted on the fork.... these are rear-wheel frame locks - slightly different situation.

But in any case - this is why this only gets the '3 minute' use. If it's going to be longer, it also gets the rear wheel lock and/or the chain. I am not a fan of one-size-fits-all solutions - IMHO this has it's place and having several locking options available allows a reasonable balance of convenience and protection on a case by case basis. I can lock this in seconds anytime I'm more than 20ft from the bike so no yahoo just jumps on and pedals away. This lets me trot over to a picnic table or scenic overlook without hugging a monster cargo bike the whole time or dragging out the big lock and chain.

For NYC, I think their could be a much simpler approach. Just get the mayor to get his cronies to pass another one of his infamous laws requiring that everyone take and post pictures of any suspected wrongful activity when in the vicinity. Add to the "Good samaritan" law. With over a million smart phones walking around, it will not be long before all the rats are Id'd.

...

Isn't the NYC approach to stopping thefts to ban ebikes?

Yep, and the NYC approach to enforcing the ban is to steal them first, lol.

Keep your bike frame dirty, put pieces of random duct tape and electrical tape all over it etc. People think my ebike is not worth stealing.

This is almost like when a society over reacts to terrorists, and thereby, gives them the power to change our free culture into a police state. If the thieves succeed in getting you to do things to your bike you don't really want to do, then they have sort of won, IMHO. :x :D

Does "things you don't really want to do" include toting around a heavy, clunky, expensive lock? ...

Carrying a lock does not really compare to painting over you nice bikes paint job and duct taping everything to make it look like an unattractive beater...does it? My point is: if ruining your bikes appearance to deter theft is what it has come to, then the thief's have already stolen something from you.

That is what they call a "twofer" in the big apple. Possibly a "threefer" if they get some photo's of the white collar crooks in action. Just wishful thinking.
