Best resources for converting hub motor (bike or e-scooter) to use as mid-drive?

I should probably just buy a mid-drive since I've never actually used one so I only have vague conceptions (likely mis-conceptions in many cases), but I'm interested in the idea. or at least into being able to more accurately contemplate the practicality of the concept so I can convince myself one way or the other.

Really it stems from the desire to have a small-wheel bike (20 inch or less) that I can pedal up to ~15mph on flats and then use a throttle to bring me up to mid twenties and maintain me there.

I don't know if the following is a question who's answer is possibly opinion or fact based: to reach highest speeds without increasing wheel size, what system would be best? geared hub, direct hub, geared mid- are "direct mid" made? i.e. DD motor which then uses the bikes gearing with/without an intermediate sprocket for additional reduction as opposed to the planetary styles used in the mids I've seen. I suppose something close to this would be a side-mount motor, although I see those running as single speed units like the two-stroke 66/80cc engine kits.

some E scooters have wild top speeds. and on the one hand, they have immense battery packs, but also get more range than I'd expect from a no-user input system.

Lightning rods might have what you're looking for

It seems that either a hub motor or a mid-drive would do what you want to do. I do that, and more, with a 500w DD hub motor bike. It draws 1300+ watts. My 750w BBS02 mid-drive also does it, drawing up to 1500 watts. No pedaling involved, if so desired, (though I pedal quite a bit.)
