I posted a year ago that I converted my 350 watt 36 volt Bafang geared hub drive to 52 volts last year. A new Lyen controller (don't recall the model but Lyen quizzed me good on my use and I'm sure supplied the right thing) complete with a 6 pin plug, label "for CA". Simple enough, but at the time I ignored it and didn't spring for a CA. I did this conversion to bring the 20" fatbike more into line with my other rides. Trail riding is not the reason, or more torque even, just a bit more speed (it worked) and a better battery at the same voltage as my other bikes, all 52 volts.

The bike rides fine, except for the the throttle response (twist grip, no cadence sensor anymore, I ride it like my other bikes, by pedaling and whatever level of throttle I think I need) needs to be re programmed. It cuts in a bit harshly, and is somewhat hard to ride at low speeds, mid and higher speeds its fine. I am 99% sure that with the CA3-DPS plugged into the LYEN controller, (http://www.ebikes.ca/shop/electric-bicycle-parts/cycle-analysts/ca3-dps.html) I can tweak things and smooth out that throttle response on the lower end, correct?

Re contact Ed Lyen and buy from him he will sell you the best C.A. That is what I did 3 years ago and have had a great ride.

I had considered that as my backup plan, I just wanted to see first if I could get the info without bugging him. I feel like I ought to know myself, bad enough having to ask here! Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes.
The CA will arrive with 3.04 firmware that will be fine for your application, but I would recommend buying a programming cable so you can re-flash the CA with later firmware if you find a new feature appealing. There's a flock of new features in the 3.1 beta releases which address enhancements for PAS, regen, Digital Aux button support, etc. These are pretty neat, but don't seem to play a role in your immediate needs.

Do the standard installation setup to get rid of any throttle dead zones and adjust the throttle ramping for a little softer engagement of the motor clutch. Then set the throttle mode to Current Throttle and adjust the current gain if necessary - this will make the throttle response much more linear without the low range twitchiness. If you wish, you can add a simple toggle switch to AuxIn to be able to cut the Max current for low speed riding. You could look into using some of the other features, but throttle ramping and Current Throttle mode are the two biggies for gear motor operation.

Basic installation and the other features are described in the [strike]Un[/strike]official Guide.

Thanks much Telektik, exactly what I needed.
Ed Lyen got back to me in minutes, even though I emailed him late last evening, my CA is on it's way plus his price was better then where I was looking elsewhere, gotta love service like that!
