Deecanios first build the "DC1"

Hi Mate

Helmet looks pretty nice, I considered a giro a while back but that DH helmet still does the job nicely, I don't care what people think my face and head is the most important thing!! yes be great to see some more footage of your bike, I hope the bike does the business for you, Bikeraiders setup looks a good way to go if you have problems, or a Puma with metal gears, it will be interesting to see how bikeraiders bike goes,.

Cheers

Hi Knoxie,All,

yes i have a very keen eye on bikeraiders setup - depending how he gets on i may have to go chain drive and nuvinci too  a pack from gary and a high amp controller would be a blast!!!
Well i did get out BUT............
weather was terrible, i really shouldn't have bothered as i didn't get to open the bike up at any point :( plus the bike and i got totally covered in crap, lol
still ran for 5ah no problems at all (thx jozzer :) ) - i took some film with my sd card cam but its a little crappy - still you can see how much the forks help as it is at least watchable. bear in mind that it was cold, very wet and i had no helmet on so i was very careful with the throttle, didnt want to slam down in the snow!!! - when it dries up i will go back and do some higher speed stuff as i had to keep backing off due to the weather, one minute i could open then a boggy puddle loomed forcing me to brake :( dont forget i cant peddle past 8mph so anything over is all puma :)
still the bike rode really well, i cannot convey how much better the new pedals are, not one slip and my trainers were soaked!!
Power wise the bike pulled very well, it kinda felt like the same acceleration as 36v but when it hits around 22mph it goes into a "second lurch forward" - i only hit it once after the forest climb but again had to back off as it was very slippy underneath with wet mud and water not instilling much confidence!!
no opti video yet, but enough gained from todays ride to know that come dry weather the bike should ride very well, i can't really assess it today as conditions were really bad, but im happy that i got out and tested the bike, at least i know that it will be ok if it rains some!!!

Hehe, a brave attempt Deec! I hope this bad weather breaks soon..
The bike looks great, nice work:)

Hi Mate,

cheers, it was a terrible day to go out and now on the way to workits glorious sunshine!!!!
oh well at least i got to have a quick blast - as i say everytime i got near the second "powerband" i had to back off - does your puma seem to have 2 bands? i cant help but feel mine has, good boost from 8mph to about 18/19 then again from 22- 30mph? weird, like it though
i will get the bike cleaned up tonight and get it ready again for some dry riding, yesterday was all stop/start and having to get off to avaoid bogs :(
Anyways cheers mate - looks like my electrics are just fine ;)

cheers

Hi Bikeraider,

thanks, it was really bad weather and the bike got covered in mud, as well as me!!! i had mud from tip to toe lol even my face which was covered with a scarf had mud splatters all over my eyes
wow i thought we had bad weather, -20  ??? its very hard to tell how much torque you have with an indoor test - if i lift my rear wheel it doesn't look very impressive but when im on the trails it is fast enough - i would wait till you can get out and see how it is to ride first, then maybe if you need more power you have plenty of ways to increase it.
i'm hoping to get out at the weekend again on a full charge so i will take some more film and try to set up the camera in a tree and do a flat out ride past (maybe should get a helmet first!) i can't wait for a nice dry day now :) at least i know i can take some rain and not have any probs with the bike which is nice as i was concerned about rain causing shorts.
I'm really looking forward to how your build goes - ooooh i nearly forgot .........

TO ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED DENISE ECKHART IS SELLING HER MONGOOSE CONVERSION - I SPOKE WITH HER ON EMAIL AND SHE IS LOOKING FOR $800 FOR THE "GOOSE" AND WILL TAKE ENQUIRIES ON HER HOTMAIL ADDRESS!!!!.

I THINK THAT ANYONE JUST STARTING TO THINK ABOUT A DIRTBIKE BUILD SHOULD TAKE A LOOK - BIKE CAN BE FOUND HERE........... http://www.evalbum.com/1363

looking forward to seeing you run Bikeraider!!!!! - keep us updated, maybe post some test vid in the apartments :)

Cheers

Hi Y :)

yes i could except getting filthy in trade for fun but the bike doesn't have the power to blast through the bog (unfortunately), not sure i could blast the ebike with a pressure washer  .
At least i have tested the bike - next time i'll get some reall footage, take my wife and let rip full throttle across the rough ;)
whats happening with you mate? hows the chop? any news on the red/green dragon? i reckon a higher powered geared using muchos amps is the dream ticket

cheers

Hi Bikeraider,

I have a 2 gig sd card in my camera - it is a "Oregon scientific" action cam that records straight to sd card.
the quality isn't great but being as it goes on youtube anyway and people have to view over the internet it's fine, it records in 800X600 i think which is resonable.
I get about 30 mins footage on 2 gig.
I think you will be surprised when you actually get to ride outside - initially i was very dissapointed when lifting the back wheel and throttling up but it doesn't actually convey how the bike will run on the road - i wouldn't worry about torque for now as no indoor test will tell you how it is, you need to wait and get outside for a ride when you can.
I would go for a 2gb card - should be fine, 30 minutes film does me great. If you have the film of indoor test post it up :) take a 30 second film of the rear wheel lifted off the floor at full throttle - that will give us an idea of power?
Looking forward to all the films this summer, hopefully all the guys will start posting once the weather breaks!!!!

Cheers Bikeraider,

D

Nice DC

Great to see you out even in the shitty weather!! one thing concerns me though you dont seem that impressed with the power? at 72V it rips on the BMX big time? sure your not loosing power somewhere? connectors? mine smokes at 72V and the wheel doesnt stop spinning?
Looking forward to seeing more video, I am also going to do some just as soon as the weather picks up, I want to do a 72V bmx off road video, make the tires nice and soft and really go for it!! could be a bone shaker!!

Bikeraider, I use a little canon Ixus for my videos, they are great quality and you maybe be able to get one cheap second hand, they do great video and you can record at 640 x 480 30fps if you have the right card, I record most of my videos at half of that and uses ulead videostudio to edit them all.

This is the camera that I use.Digital Ixus 40

800px-Canon_Digital_Ixus_40.jpg

I use a variety of clamps to hold them on, all based around the ram mount, I use a little camera adaptor and a bar clamp, i also strap it upside down under the bottom of my full face helmet sometimes then flip it back the right way with the video editing software.

Looking forward to the snow thawing and seeing some of your videos of your bike running Bikeraider, good luck with it.

Hi All,

bikeraider,

yes thats the camera i have so if you hang on until i get some good day footage you will see if you like it or not - to be fair to that oregon camera it is better than the footage i have taken because i have taken it all whilst mounted to the handlebars, not good as it picks up every vibration or steering adjustment!!!- really what i need to do with it is mount it to a helmet as your body doesn't move as much as the bike.

knoxie,:)

i'm not too dissapointed as my posts may suggest mate, i think that is just frustration at not being able to open her up properly.
no wheelspins from me as i wound up the power slowly as not to spin for fear of losing it on the concrete with no lid
i dont think i have the power of the bmx, i remember that spinning at 25mph on the track!! as it was first time out i throttled with care and always a slow wind up, i expect it to spin full throttle but i didn't want to blow anything first go - as Y sais i'll give her a go on full charge on dry roads and see what's what ( i took her out at 81v instead of the 83 fresh off the charge). i still dont understand the whole volts, amps, watts scenario properly and i need to as i have scope to adjust power to suit now Joz has given me an adjustable pot - i did wonder if i went paralell with my packs would i be able to pull 70a instead of 35? and would that put me back to 17mph but give me great acceleration? i need to understand better to do the maths to see which suits - one thing i do find is that if im on the trails (singletrack) i rarely breach 20mph so i'm considering trying 36v20ah usable and uprate troller to 70-80 amps?? we'll have to see as i can wind the troller up to 40a and continue with 72v. Much more testing needed and next time out will be road only.

Y,

hehehhe - yes was a little girly with the throttle - i have a fear in wet that stems from losing my mc in the wet a few times :) still get a lid on and i'll be blasting it soon enough!!!!
heads up this weekend, i'll chrge friday and ride sat or sun, will give it nuts this time and see what gives - if the worst comes to the worst Joz and i have discussed the "etek" stinky

cheers

D

Hi Bikeraider,

yes you understand i have been thinking of an etek for monster power but realistically i dont think an etek and a bicycle is a good pairing ;) it was just a thought for fun :)
your understanding is the same as mine on how things work.
Sooooo by that rational i could setup as i am for 72v35a = 2520w
OR set up for 36v70a = 2520w - if i do go paralell does that mean that speed would drop from 32 to 17mph as before at 36v BUT acceleration/run time is doubled??? It's interesting to me as im sure it would be of use for short bursts of speed quickly - as i said sometimes on the trails 17mph is enough, occasionally i get room to do more top end but not that often.
in the end i will just have to try it and see for myself - i dont have a controller that can handle 70a and i dont know if the maths translates to real world experience.
I will give all configs a shot and see which is best for me :)

Cheers

Hi DC

Right hang on for a while then.. play some, the BMX spins well at 72V, what motor you running? the original BMC, a word to the wise dont try running 80A through those little phase wires they will burn!! or at least get very hot, I would stick with what you got mate even that is going to warm those wires up on a hot day so pay attention to it and check the hub and wires for heat during the first few rides.

Wise not to go too mental, I have to watch my high torque Puma on the 26 Incher at 48V under 20mph its mental on the acceleration I tell you, no one handed operation it throws you back too much! ha ha.

An Etek is fun but heavy on the bike and heavy on your batteries, you want something in between if the Puma isnt bad enough for your needs, little Lemco like I used on the Lemco bike is ideal, rated at 3-4KW but can do a lot more much smaller and lighter than the Etek, thats Ideal its brushed though so you would need a new controller, they are great little motors though, I have one in my loft although it doesnt technically belong to me, the owner would very likely sell it though.

Have fun playing for now, I would be surprised if it isnt enough mojo for you mate? I love the BMX even at 37V I ride it all summer, heck I even took it on holiday and rode it all about Padstow, it was great!! did a no peddling run from Padstow to Wadebridge down the camel trail that was awesome! infact my online BMX picture was taken overlooking the sea at the mouth of the estuary there! the BMX makes for a great little summer bike, even for a big 6 footer like me!!

Cheers

Hi Raider

We ran this little motor at 2.5KW happily for ages on the Lemco bike, you can see the motor here attached to the Bike gearbox, its a Lemco 130, they are pretty pricey though, you can run them at 48V though even though the specs says you cant. I have posted a picture of the gearbox that we made as well.

Cheers

Knoxie, I have some video of it spinning somewhere I will dig that out and post it, I think I pulled the Lemco bike videos offline a while ago.

Cheers

Knoxie

hi Guys,

yes i was just pondering on how mental you could go with a bicycle mate, no worries.
I think the puma will do me fine knoxie, i really had a bad ride due to the weather and i didn't thrash at all i just cruised about to be honest.
The wet day run cannot be counted in assessing my new setup tbh, another thing is ,and i know it sounds stupid, i was wearing thick gloves and i was finding it hard to fully throttle, with bare hands i kinda wind it up to half then jam it underneath with my thumb whilst i readjust to wind up the second half of the throtlle with my hand in a good position to steer too - this was difficult with gloves, need some bike gloves for sure, thin and grippy.
i will charge up 2moro night and go for another spin at the weekend, i find it a little risky to ride out on the road sometimes as i think i would attract attention but the forest isnt going to be any good for a month or so yet when we get sustained dry weather, hopefully.
I'll get her charged and have another go - at the end of my run i did a flat road test and hit 27mph but my voltage was down by this point and i hit lvc just at the end of the run so im sure my top end is good.
one thing i do find is most of my power comes in the last quarter of throttle ?? that is likely why i didn't spin at all as i was just easing away and slowly winding up - next time out i'll ride bare handed and whack the throttle open once rolling - see what happens :)
i'm offline at the mo out of work hours but hoping to have my pc rebuilt byt sat, then i have to build my mates too :( but im sure i'll squeeze in another outing somewhere as long as it isn't wet!!! took me all night to clean off all that crap!!! lol
I'd like to see some vid/pics of the lemco too mate???

cheers

Nice one, that looked like more fun!

Is the video supposed to go black and quiet in the middle? :)

Great to see the fruits of your epic build in action D! Looks and sounds like lots of fun.
That weird smeary effect on the video ... did it really rain that much? Is the whole of the south of England under water now

Enjoy the sun :D

Hi Joz,Malc,

Joz, no the video id done at 3.30s but i left the audio file in movie moaker stretched out so it shows no film and no sound thinking its bigger thanit actually is :) - you can see the work you did for me on the cells and troller is working lovely !!!

Malc,

not sure on the smeary look, still wet down here really but rideable at least - epic indeed!!!!, its running nice now but i do want to make some more changes  at least i have a ride for the summer now !!!
looking forward to seeing your bike in action too - i'm just catching up with the whole thread now :)

cheers

Hi DC

Nice video mate and a great tune as well (we have similar tastes methinks) bike looks like its going very well, I must meet up with you when the weather gets better, you can try the BMX and I will try yours, I can bring the KMX as well.

Looked to be going much quicker this time mate and the hill climbing looked spot on, be nice to get some external shots of you riding it ala your first and I thought very cool! video, love the tune on that one as well.

So pleased you finally have a ride, I am sure you will want to beef things up even more in time, I would suggest for now you enjoy your investment though and get a full seasons riding out of your bike, you have got it done just at the right time, so many people finish their builds just in time for winter so it seems sometimes.

Nice work to Jozzer as well looks like you got that licked!! you are the man!!

More video please!!

Whoa .. i missed that one !!!

That's MUCH better ! and more the way it should be !

I think this bike is just right.. leave it be fore a while and Ride it until something breaks !

Great job .. even down stairs !!!

Hi Guys,

yes much better this time around as things had dried out some and i could open up a bit more
I think you are both correct that i should just ride it now and get some enjoyment out of it before making more changes, i may have a look at the gearing and see if i can improve it and stay on 20's - that would be way cool - i remember going for a ride with the wife and we were out about 2.5 hours and i'd only used 3ah  but i used my pedals and only powered here and there, at hills i would put my hand on my wifes back and we would both pedal but the puma gave us a massive boost - hehehe, my wife laughed as we both went up the hill, sitting :)
Yes would love to meet up Paul - i can take a drive to you mate or you can come to the forest if you'd like to???
we should hang on a wee while until it dries right up then we could take the stinky and the bmx for a really cool ride on the bridleway and the singletrack :) i too prefer to have the vid taken by someone else it gives a much clearer perspective on how the bike performs - yes i think we dig the same tunes mate, trouble with using them for the vids is your totally sick of them by the time you've edited and heard it about 50 times!! lol
get them bikes tuned up knoxie!!!!! - we have business this year!!! Maybe if nothing comes about we can meet up with Joz too as without you guys the stinky wouldn't be here for me to enjoy!!!
More vid on the way !!!! i'll try to get the wife to do some filming ;)

cheers

Hi Bikeraider,

thanks, yes the video came out ok and that was on the scientific oregon camera you were looking at.
I am very pleased with the acceleration and top end and im going to leave the bike alone for a bit and just enjoy riding it for this summer - that said i want to look at gearing next for the pedals as i would like to have more options to pedal  .

i wouldn't worry too much about the performance on the 1200w motor - you have an etek on the way ???
man that should rock 8) - i think once you get the etek mounted it will be way cool, you should have more torque than you want then!!! - i'm really looking forward to seeing what the etek coupled with the nuvinci can do and i would consider using them too on my next build, im paying close attention to how that works out - i think it will be awesome!!

Now your going to etek i would pay close attention to your dropouts - yes i know it's not a hub but it will have some serious pull to unleash and me personally i would want to know that the wheel is VERY secure!!

get some pictures up when you get the etek - i would love to see it - how much did the etek cost???

Cheers bikeraider - chin up :) you will be rocking very soon i hope ;)

Hi All,

been away for a week but back out on the bike today - forest is starting to dry out a little and i went just for trails today so i didn't bother with the "blur" cam - nothing worth showing, however did manage to find the "bomb pits" and did mange to jump the kona :) must have been all of 6 " lol - i'll try and get some video tomorrow, but im happy that the bike just soaked it up without a noise and the electrics rocked on 8)
i still thinking i want to go to 24's and retrieve normal gearing - the bike performs really well - however i want to reduce the weight (new custom pack will help here, im thinking 60v 60a ballpark or whatever fits in the triangle) and have the ability to mash the pedals at any given speed.
i tried the front 42tooth instead of the 32 and it was better as i could pedal out for longer and i enjoyed mashing them uphill to get to optimum speed quicker however again the gearing stops to short to assist the full band of the motor, which im loving still.
now i'm riding the trails that i usually ride im realising more that the balance in what i want from my ebike is changing, as a lot of new forum members i see in the threads my goal was as much power as i could carry leaving me zero pedaling except up the steepest hills - which is exactly what i got :) however the torque is more than good enough at 20" and i think the loss of some torque in a 24" wheel in exchange for full size cranks and gears is a fair trade.
i had been on the pedals today and managed to pull 6.5ah from the pack before lvc - i was expecting to get 9ah or so from them as i got that from each pack when i was running 36v, but i guess because im running in series (or thrashing more ) im going to get less?
Anyway loved the ride today, will be going again tomorrow too :) - i have a lot of thinking to do before making the final adjustments to the bike so i'll keep you posted on what im thinking, always good to hear others opinions :)

cheers
