Dogati Electric Superleggera

Awesome! What's your topspeed?

it did 150 kph on the stand with the alfine. with the gearing on the nuvinci it should be a tad lower. i want to rig up an adapter to put this on a wheel balancer (the 3 incher shakes hard at high speed) before i do live top speed tests. i estimate it will top out around 90 kph with a fresh pack and low tuck.

my first video (not a great performance). the Alfine 11 hub is busted and i'm struggling to keep the gears from slipping. the alfine is also not shifting when i want it to. advice: don't use the Alfine 11 if you have more than 250 watts

Ben, thanks for this insight. I was waiting for someone to try a rohloff or An alfine 11 in a powerful RC motor application. Alfine was great cheap alternative to a Rohloff, but now seems useless in powerful ebike solution. Did you consider using a Rohloff? I know they are expensive but damn does that bike seem worth it.

Terrific videos.

luke, i will definitely head down to sc with ghettoracer next time i'm in town. but first i have to produce the first batch of dogatii and ship a few down there for me and ghettoboy to ride.

if you can swing by taiwan, you could catch the Taipei Cycle show (mar 7-10). dogati will be on display at Pacific Cycles booth and available for test ride. free room & board at my house plus entertainment :) my friend also has a vacant resort (10,749 sq ft) that he has graciously offered to let me use.

Ben- I wish I could have made it bro. I didnt finish business until this afternoon, and Im flying to HK and then SF late tonight. Had such a good time though. :) Ive got an unlimited entry visa now, so we should be able to party in China or TW one of these trips.

i'd pass on the rohloff. for these kinds of acceleration, you really want max 2 or 3 gear switches and top out. i spoke with nuvinci at the show today. they need a little "nudge" to start backing high performance applications. i think the n360 harmony is the only choice right now (for production anyway). however, my friend at pacific cycles has worked with sturmey archer to build a custom dog clutch that can take up to 300nm. he will make an introduction and i will see if they are interested in co-developing a bullet-proof 3-speed hub for ebikes. if anyone wants to chime in on what they think a bullet-proof gear hub should be, they are welcome.

I guess it should be strong enough that the wheel spins before anything breaks.
The ratio change on a 3 speed SA hub is a bit narrow. A wider range would be nice.
It will be much more efficient when locked up (1:1 ratio), which I think is usually 2nd gear on those.
I think it would be better if 1:1 was the top ratio and it geared down from there, since you could stay in top gear most of the time.

let me talk to your boss and tell him "zero" should not mean all work and zero fun  you're gonna rack up air miles like tom hanks.

not to rub it in, but we were chillin with justin at his booth today. he is a super nice guy and really great to talk to. he is going to give me his only v3 ca and even help wire it up. i was drooling over all the "rc" features. if weather is good and justin has the time, we may hit the secret bike-autobahn that snakes throughout the city. i can feel my kundalini rising already :D

got it:

1. hub breaks last after other stuff
2. wider gear ratio (350%?)
3. wouldn't it make sense to make the most efficient gear be the one likely to pedal (limp home) with?

how about splined vs threaded interface? internal freewheeling cassette with big/lots of dual row pawls? length of cassette? dual sprocket? dog clutch to engage/disengage for regen use? hall and torque sensors? 12ga spoke capability? automatic shifting? rotary or speed shifter? swappable gear rings for varying ratios?

Ask them what's happening with their 2 speed hub motor, Ben...

Dogati and Ebikes.ca at Taipei Cycle 2012. It felt surreal to be rolling Dogati around the main hall. Everywhere we went, a crowd of people and paparazzi would congregate around the bike blocking the aisle (especially if i spun up the wheel to 140kph). If we rolled in front of a major brand, people would walk out of their booth to see Dogati. Many thanks to Justin for allowing us to park the bike in his booth--it was fortunate to run into him here. Appreciation also goes to Tony (my partner), Rex (Pacific Cycles) and Stijin (guy in the foreground & famous Birdy designer) who are all helping take Dogati from the shop to the showroom.

There is definitely a lot of repressed desire in high performance ebikes just waiting to explode. Next year i would be willing to rent a booth under Endless Sphere or "DIY ES Builds" if enough peeps wanna trek over to taiwan to display their creations. All we would need is a small booth and roam around the hall using the booth as a home base (kinda like at a rave) and impromptu charging station.

What a brilliant idea :D

Im loving everything Im hearing and seeing there bro!

Jusin is such a cool kat.

It would be fun to bring deathbike there. :)

Hey Ben,

Can you do everyone a favor and leave the seat folded upward? It looks really odd folded down and does not give an accurate impression of what the bike really should look like.

It is like leaving the cover on a Ferrari at a show.

LOL sorry I had to read the last page of this thread 3 times to find Taiwan..... Hmmm at least things are cheep there.

Well i at first thought the forward seat position looked weird but the more i looked at it the more i like it. It adds to the exotism of the bike as surely this is a special build.

I just read this whole thread tonight for the first time and this build is so inspiring and i daresay that my fav bike on es would not be topped which is miles emoulton. i think you take top honors in my book on the thought and execution. Congratulations! I feel a little embarrassed to say this but you are my hero just from building a fantastic bike :D thanks for being an inspiration and sharing your 3 year project.

One thing though after seeing the video is the bike sounds really loud with a high pitched whine. Surely there can be a design that would lessen that noise.
