Not only that, but I get to meet batman... err is that Matt man?

It's just dumb luck he lives down the road from my parents. I'm really looking forward to seeing a real winter and having a xmas with the fam.

Can a 600w 24v currie scooter motor run on 50v of Lipo? Yes for about 8 minutes. LOL Then it becomes a smoke machine. But it was a fun 8 minutes.

So if you don't get it, I killed my motor on my test ride. Before I did that though, I saw some interesting numbers and had an amazing if not scary bike.

Numbers
62 k/hr and still pulling, a little afraid to see the top end with a bad knee (speed read on GPS)
117amps peak (controller says it's limited to 100amps, but I have seen 117amps when it was at 25v)
5200 and some watts

I can't believe the numbers myself, but there they are.

So the ride... Well, It was exciting. I tried in the lowest gear to begin and was very easy on the throttle. The torque was enough to make the chain skip on the sprocket. I went to the highest gear and it was pretty good. There was plenty of torque and the acceleration was amazing. I had to go lightly on the throttle thought as any quick movement would have thrown the bike out from under me. Anytime I twisted the throttle a little quick, the front end got very light. I had power on all of the small hills I went up and never slowed down up them. There is a long hill that would allow me to coast faster than the motor could drive me before. This time, the motor pulled all the way down the hill. After a little while I could smell the smoke getting ready to come out. I coasted for awhile and then tried the throttle again and there was less power and then a trail smoke from both sides of the motor. What a fun ride though.

So... From here. Do you guys think the 900w or 1000w version would be able to handle the power? It would be pretty hard to go back to 25v now as I was looking for 50k/hr. I have pretty much everything else sorted now, I just need a motor that can handle the power. I know, I know RC. I would if I had the money. I just want to swap out the motor, so I need a brushed or sensored motor.

I thought this may happen when I went to 50v, so I am not surprised. Open to suggestions. Looking for a good mid powered motor I can bolt on my motor bracket.

I was afraid that motor would not take that much voltage for long. On my son's OSET I have measured temps at the back plate of the motor at 125 degrees F after several hard hill climb sections. It is using the 24v/900watt motor and runs at 36v, motor can be seen here http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/24-volt-900-watt-electric-motor-11-tooth-chain-sprocket.html. Ian Smith who sells the OSET's has run the 36v/750 watt motor at 60v successfully, but I do not know for a fact that he is getting any more power from it than I am with my setup.

While I haven't cooked a motor yet I have been giving some thought to how to keep a motor cooler so it doesn't cook.

I have considered a large heat sink like the ones the goped folks are using when they use the ampflow a300 motor, linked here http://www.torkinator.com/ (I have considered using the ampflow motor as it is rated to handle much higher current then the scooter motor but it is much longer and has mounting problems due to its length).

Also, I have seen "upgraded" brushes for dewalt motors used in fighting robots as the ones here http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/DCW-BH01.html Perhaps an "upgraded" heatsink brush holder with higher temp brushes could be made.

I have also considered using "liquid cooling" by wrapping the motor with 1/8" brass tubing and pumping water through a small radiator as is done with high end computer chips.

Just some ideas,

Rick

Tyler, I have an excuse to take it apart now, so I will defiantly post pics of the autopsy. I am curious to see what went inside as well.

Kim, yeah it was good and a little frightening (in a good way). It's been a while since I've had that sort of adrenaline rush and I am a rock climber. I'm excited to get a motor than can take the power.

LCNMRider, as I said I'm not surprised either. It was hot right away, and I knew from before I even tried it it would probably melt. I will have a look at motors that are a similar size, but I am leaning towards a 36v higher watt currie. Seeing that I am all set up for one, it would be an easy swap.

I'll try to get autopsy pics up before I take off the the US. The bike will be down until I get back though. I can pick up a new motor, along with a couple of other bits I want, while I am in the US and save on shipping. When I get back mid Jan, it will be all on.

Weeeeel..the 80-100 130kv Turnigy motor i use is only 99 dollars and has the power you seek, build quality is definitely alot better than it once was on them too, they ain't no Astros but for people like us that cant afford the good stuff its not a bad option imo...

I know, I know... that would mean a new controller and throttle set up, or playing with halls. The new controller and throttle are too much at the moment and I am not ready to play with halls. I do want to do an RC bike, just not yet. I am going to learn to run before I fly    (extra smiles so every one knows I'm serious, right Kim?)

I am looking at this motor at the moment

I hope I can still get it, another site that had them said they were discontinued. I figure the 36v 1000w should hold up better, as LCNMRider said the guys that sells the OSET's runs 60v through a 36v 750w version. The 1000w also has some cooling fins that should help. I guess we will find out in another month. Damn holiday, lol. Oh wait I get to go on holiday!!! Nice!

I'll try to pull the melted motor apart, or at least off the bike tonight. I'll get some pics of the bike as well before I tear it down. I may get paint the motor brackets now anyway, since I have to pull the motor off.

Alright, I was motivated, so I came through with the autopsy. I took pics of the bike together first, so here they are.PB300003.JPGPB300007.JPGPB300004.JPGPB300008.JPGPB300009.JPGView attachment 12PB300006.JPGPB300005.JPG

So that is the bike finished. I may put a main switch and a fuse in later, but that is it all done. A shame it doesn't go now.

Now for the autopsy. I think these picks speak for themselves.PB300013.JPGPB300014.JPGPB300023.JPGView attachment 6PB300020.JPGPB300022.JPGPB300019.JPGPB300016.JPGPB300018.JPGPB300015.JPG

Well, there you have it. One toasted brushed motor.

You broken him reeealy good LoL..Had a 1000watt Unite motor that looked very similar inside

You see now!!!??, This is why your missus wont let you have nice things anymore, because this is what
you go and do to them :: shakes head::

Motor has been ordered. I went with the 1000w 36v currie motor I posted earlier. It will be under the tree as a xmas gift when I get to the US. Not long now, 4 days until I leave for the USofA.

Clay,

Are you sure you want to swing by? You KNOW you will HAVE to have RC stuff once you see (and hopefully ride) one.

Matt

hehehehe.. give him a taste Matt  that will get the "hooks" into him, he won't be able to resist and we will have another converted to the darkside...oh wait, he's already on the darkside....well he will be deeper into the darkside...

KiM

Ha ha...

It's too late. I already want an RC set up, I just can't afford it yet. It will happen and it will be spectacular!!

Matt, I'm looking forward to having a go if it dries up. I see some snow on the ground there already. Humm... Studded tires and a hard pack parking lot with no light poles. Now that could be exciting if you could get going.

Darth Flyinmonkie

I leave for the US today! It only takes 3 days from where I live. Matt, I'll send you a PM after I get to WI and let you know when we could drop down.

Clay

That is cool!

We are looking forward to having you here. Maybe I will have both trikes up and running when you get here for comparison.

Looks like we will have a white Christmas this year!

Matt

FM and Matt,

please take some vids when you get together, its nice to see the guys we chat with so often.

Thanks guys,

I'll be sure to take some video and try to get some pictures. I'm just hanging out at my Sister's in LA at the moment. We fly to Wisconsin this avo. Then tomorrow we get up and drive to Buffalo for an early xmas. We will be back in Wisconsin shortly before xmas. Some time after that I'll set up a time to meet up with Matt. I'm looking forward to it.

On the bike front. I had to email Superkids about my motor (where I ordered it from), as I hadn't heard anything in a few days. They are usually right onto it. They said they were trying to find the motors in the warehouse somewhere. Must be a big place, lol. Anyway, they had one that has been used, but works fine and they will give me a 30 warranty on it and a discount. So I went for that one and it is on it's way. When I get back, it will be bolt it up and see if I can smoke this one. Hopefully not.

Got my new motor. It is shiny and silver with fins, other wise looks like the last one.

Had a good holidays and looking forward to New Years. I'll be catching up with Matt S. shortly after the new year. We will have the camera and video camera out if the roads are dry.

Hope everyone else had a good holidays.

I got visit the Matt cave and it was great. It was really nice to meet Matt and his family and they are fantastic people. It was nice to see the Matt cave and it is impressive what he does with what he has. Of course he has his CnC guy right there.

I got to drive the black trike and it is all Matt says it is. He said the batteries were cold and it didn't have as much grunt as normal, but it was still amazing. The thing is super solid and production quality. Matt's work is even better in person that it is in pictures. It was a real kick to drive the trike and I can see the draw. It is cool to be able to apply all that power when you want it.

The yellow trike was still being worked on, but looks fantastic. I am looking forward to seeing it together.

I would have some video of me driving the black trike, but we ended up with video of feet instead. Sorry, I tried.

Matt, Thanks again for letting us come by. It was great to meet you and see what you have done in person. I hope the coming year for you and your family is a good one and we will think about you shoveling snow when we get back summer in NZ in a couple of days.
