GNG, 1000W 48V BB-drive, $400

GNG 1.1 on 72 volt and 62 a.
Runs like hell. I had to film with one hand and trottle shift and steer with the other, so i couldn't give it the max.
It is a nice impression do!

Forgive me Chalo if I have sinned, but this is a "big box store" bike that gets raves from everyone who has bought one or just inspected the build quality:
http://www.bigboxbikes.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=499
It's a 29er DS aluminum frame. I'm not sure what the BB measures as I don't have one. But I'm sure there is a measurement somewhere.

I really really want a torque machine in my arsenal and am wondering if this bike & a Gen1 kit & LightningRod's mounting kit would all fit with no hassles?

This next link from amazon lets you ENLARGE the picture and gives a very good view of the bottom bracket and bottom tube and rear suspension.

just a thought ,, would there be any problems if the rear cover had (say) a 10mm hole drilled in the centre so that a pully extracter could push the shaft out before unbolting the covers to remove them ,, im thinking that this way it may take away the risk of cracking or breaking the back cover ??

I suppose you could put an access hole in the right case as long as you had a way of sealing it. I'd just take the case off so I could see what I was doing.

I forgot a detail on the motor spindle. There is a circlip behind the drive side bearing. The bearing will come out with the spindle as on the motor I tore down. You only have to worry about the circlip if you want to take the bearing off of the spindle.

More video please. Duct tape the camera to your helmet so we can see more of what's going on.

It will be better if the BB is a 73mm. I made the 73s longer to allow for odd front downtube shapes like on this bike. The 68s will fit the BB but will hang down more because of that curve in the bottom of the downtube. Find out what the BB shell width is.

Always buy from the smallest, most independent store you can find. Big box stores, especially Mall-Wart, drive out independent businesses that support families rather than a corporation. Big box service is crap and they treat their employees like slaves. Nothing wrong with this bike for the money, but there's a lot wrong with Mall-Wart.

Here a new video in HD.

I kept the camera in my mounth so you can hear my breath :D

But it is a impression of the power of the GNG.

The only problem is that i smoked my 9 fet lyen or the phase wires  . How can I test that? to make sure what the problem is.

Okay, you asked for a GNG motor disassembly tutorial- here it is. It's not perfect, but if you've never taken one of these motors apart this should be of some help to you. It's not that hard once you know what you are dealing with inside of the cases. Thanks again to Krister who travelled this path first and gave me the courage to do the same.

thanks m8 thats great ,, especially showing how to get the bk cover off,

then on reasembly the hole could be covered ..
After I broke my cover, I heated up the piece that remained stuck on the bearing, and it made a small pop when it detached from the bearing and then slid right off. You should have no problem removing the rear cover if you get it nice and hot.

Just be patient, careful, don't pry or spin the covers in an attempt to remove them, the windings are just inside and easy to scratch when the covers loosen up and start to spin freely.

Secret1511, try your old controller? The phase wires overheated and shorted on my 12fet lyen which fried something in it. The fets test fine, so I'm hoping it's something simple like a capacitor. The lyen controller tester shows 5v but when I twist the throttle, none of the phases light up.

Impressive! When you get it to run reliably that will be a blast!

Thanks for slowing down around other cyclists. Hauling ass past other bikes at 60 kph will get the bureaucrats involved in our hobby.

Bee i've got the same problem. The phase wires show tention, but when trottle it stays the same.

I'm actually going to Hong Kong in November. I contacted the GNG seller and they told me it would be possible for me to bring a kit back in my checked luggage back to Los Angeles.

I'm thinking about picking up a set but not sure if 48V or the new 60V version.

Get the 60v but not the controller. Get a lyen 12 fet and you are set to go

cool! also, should I, do I, and where can I upgrade the primary drive to a chain instead of belt?

I read that the belt snaps, breaks, and shreds easily.

Also what does the 60V chain reduction mean??

also, where can I pick up a quality 60V Lipo?

The 60v has a chain, that's the new upgrade.
Lipo's from hobbyking. Get quality, because these things can burn your house down.

Is it possible to just use their 48V controller with the 60V motor kit? I think 60V may be a bit excessive and 37MPH is quite too fast. I'll be happy with just 30mph.

Also, I would prefer to have a aluminum-cased battery so probably go with a rear-mount 48V lipo or lifepo4.

48v I think so! I am not 100% sure.
What kinda bike are you gonna use?

a lightweight front suspension electra townie 21 speed. The bike is only like 20-25 lbs. I think I'll have to pick up a rear rack battery from conhismotor. It's a bit heavy at 6 KG but it is the only clean solution.

This is what's annoying about Mister Tao:

refund.png

They burned 10 days of my time just to tell me that the vendor advertising the motors that I wanted on Tao Bao did not actually have them. Of course I pre paid with my VISA to place the order. Mister Tao does not immediately refund your credit card, which would be simple to do. They 'refund' the money into your Mister Tao account which of course is their bank account. They are a bit too clever with money in these situations and I dislike that aspect of dealing with them.

I have another Tao Bao vendor for the Big Block motor that I will try next. Kin and I are already planning a monster FS bike around that motor so I need to get my hands on one.

I am not finding anything at those price points from folks that are making/selling them in individual quantities. Most likely closeouts / seconds. Hopefully we can find a quality vendor that can make some customized in 50-100 pc lots at a fair price point.

Most of the vendors that I've found on China are in this price range. Shipping is the problem. EMS, DHL or China Air is going to run you more than the cost of the motor. It will be $100 by the time you have it in your hands.

I've had troubling experience with shipping out of China with these stuff. I'm going to Hong Kong in two months to pick up one of this kit from GNG themselves. Anyone thinks TSA will not let this on a jumbojet checked baggage to the US? No batteries of course, just the motor kit.

TSA says power tools, drills, etc. are allowed on checked baggages 7 inches in length. I think the motor itself is no bigger than 7 inches.

Anyone got a source for the new chain reduction motor/reduction assembly, or just the motor? GNGebike.com is no longer selling just the motors apparently, and we have to buy their controller and crappy bottom bracket to get the motor.

Bee my controller is broken. My old one is working, so no phase wire problem. I think the 4500w for a 9 fet was a little to much. Will a 12 fet hold?

I flew internationally out of the US with a brushed currie motor in a checked bag a couple of years ago. It isn't much smaller and I would think it would be fine.

100 pages, woo hoo! A lot has happened in a year, the first post was August 2012.

Just a reminder to anyone reading this thread just recently, the first post has become an index with links to info about the GNG, and the third post is an index of GNG builds, so you can find them when you need to.
