Heat wave and motor temps

Did a 105 degree 36 mile ride on my bbso2 1500 watt direct drive hub combo. The hub does most the work but the mid drive was still getting a little hotter than l like . I really don't think a single motor rig would survive in these temps unless it is modded for cooling. I would think most geared hubs melt pretty fast unless they are running metal gears .
 
Oh yeah, subtract easily 33% of the power rating of any motor in the middle of summer.. the ol' air cooled versus water cooled engine debate comes up.. :)

And increase the battery's internal resistance 4x in the middle of winter ( i mean real winter, not what you experience in most parts of CA )

Adjust your build accordingly!
 
One of my coworkers rides a homebrew e-bike I made with a 36v battery scavenged from a rental scooter. In this heat the battery has to cool down a while before the BMS agrees to charge. It is not heating up from running hard. Mostly it is ambient heat plus sunshine.

I do a morning ride and use way less battery than the same ride in late afternoon. I am guessing if you drilled some nice size holes in the side covers it helps. I do ride some cooler days in the winter although never below freezing and notice a loss of range on the colder days.

105F for 36 miles is a brutal test for any e-bike motor. Splitting load between two motors probably made a huge difference there. I'd definitely want temperature monitoring before pushing a single motor that hard.
