I've done some further "research" on your issue and it seems that some of the earlier types of 4230 Chrome Moly where better suited to "cold" setting (i.e. bending after the factory fabrication process). Certain types of the newer "thinner" walled ChroMo, on the other hand, evidently uses a different heat treatment that all but precludes "cold setting".
In other words, bending some of the newer TW ChroMo might not only result in cracks, but could weaken the material outright.
