Manufacturers and dealers to avoid

ANOTHER UPDATE: In going through my bookmarks to clean them out, I went back to the Poweridestore.com site, and there is new information posted from him, which reads as follows:

This year I have had some personal problems that has kept me from doing the business in a correct way. By the first of the year I will be posting new prices on my remaining new inventory. These prices will be reduced up to 50 percent. Due to the low pricing the inventory will be sold without a warranty. I am going to stop selling the motor kits after the inventory is sold. If you ever wanted to purchase a hub motor or an accessory this would be a good time to do so. Everything I will be selling is new and has never been used. The shipping method I would like to use is the USPS if possible. All items ordered will be shipped in a timely manner.

So, maybe there is still hope for getting product at a good price, at least for a while?

Uh, if you take a gander at the current prices, they are nothing to get very excited over. Maybe he has not marked them down yet.

For sure they are still what they were last week, but as he said in his notice, most things will be marked down by the first of the year. That's still about 3 weeks away.

That's what people were hoping with Brett too. Good luck.

That was probably before my time, so I have no idea what you are talking about, Tyler. Anyways, as an update, it seems Earl has been busy dropping prices on the website, because many of his items have been slashed, some to below 50% even. I went ahead and ordered some things, because I am willing to give him a second chance. I think we all deserve second chances every once in a while.

I will say that almost 25% of the items I was going to buy were already "out of stock", so it seems that at least a few of you have been watching his site.

He had a GREAT deal on controllers, but alas all are gone now. :(

So anyways, for any of you who are willing to give him a second chance, now is the time. I'll post back when/if my items show up here.

Been waiting TWO MONTHS for Magic Pies to be delivered..

..multiple email exchanges met with 'Don't worry' replies..

..optimism for a better Golden Motor ..evaporated..

UPDATE: Just wanted to let anyone who is following this thread that I got my shipment from Earl today. All items are new condition and work just fine. I am so happy that I went ahead and placed a second order with him. The prices are just too good to pass by at this point. So, if anyone is looking to stockpile some spare parts and such, it's my opinion that now is the time to do it.

Re: "BionX"

To see a posting with only the name of the manufacturer, and no explaination, has no value at all, and in my opinion simply calls some question toward the poster and their motives. If they have a story, they can tell it. Otherwise, they literally have nothing to say.

Fair enough comment. I ought to back up my post with some reasons. I'll copy and paste a few things I have posted elsewhere.

Generally

Delicate and tricky system (concealed voltage switcher on charger and no warning anywhere about it); over priced to start with ( nearly twice as expensive as a comparable DIY kit); over priced to maintain ($1000 for a replacement battery - they even gouge you on something like an axle nut); won't honour their warranty or take responsibility for their own shortcomings and lack of information which causes problems - installation information; downtime issues because they insist everything be sent back to them for repair - even replacing a fuse will void their warranty, will use any excuse available to them to avoid warranty; components are not made in Canada, which is the impression BionX likes to give consumers; the battery compartment, locking mechanism, one of its main selling points, is poorly manufactured.

It's a closed system designed specifically to make you totally dependent upon their whims and pricing, resulting in wasted time and money the moment the slightest thing goes wrong, which they exploit by overcharging.

More particularly, I have had reason to send this letter of complaint to BionX:

To Whom It May Concern,

I refer to RMA number 13003. The repair number relates to a motor, which had a wiring problem and a recharger which had blown up.

I have been advised by the seller located in Utah that you are not honoring the warranty although he has not explained to me your reasons. This is despite the items being sent back to you being near new. The charger is said to cost $78, being a replacement, and $298 for the motor repair.

Firstly, the charger. The problem with the charger could have easily been avoided if your company placed a warning on the recharger unit which was clear for the user to see about the voltage switch on the back or advised the user of the voltage switch on the back of the recharger in the user booklet provided. By not doing either of these things, it is a shortcoming of your company, not the fault of the user, which has caused the problem of the recharger to blow up because of an incorrect voltage setting when first being used as supplied.

You ought to take responsibility for this oversight and replace the recharger for free as well making sure that this problem does not happen with other customers. This can easily be done by arranging a highly visible sticker to be placed on the rechargers acting as a warning. Longer term, you should include the information in the user booklets as a double measure against the problem occurring. Better still, supply a recharger which has no need of a voltage switch and is made to handle different voltage automatically.

Secondly, the price of the repair to the motor at $298 seems excessive. It seems to be the price of a replacement motor at wholesale price. The fixing of the wiring for the motor I sent back could not possibly cost $298 in my opinion. If the motor is being replaced, please send me back the damaged motor, together with the new replacement motor I am purchasing. I am being charged for a new motor, so I want my old motor back also.

If, on the other hand, the $298 is for labour and parts to fix the old motor, please itemize the charge of labour and parts in the invoice for the work, seeing as how this is not a warranty matter in your opinion, but a charge for services and parts rendered and supplied. I will know whether the motor is a replacement because I have the details of the one I sent recorded here.

Lastly, I wish to make known my total dissatisfaction with the amount of time it has taken your company to deal with the repair, particularly in regard to the charger. It ought to have been obvious the charger needed replacing within minutes and a replacement should have been arranged immediately. Instead, you have taken several weeks to react. Meanwhile, I have been left with a flat battery which needs recharging urgently instead of it remaining in a prolong flat state suffering damage.

You are well aware what conditions will cause damage to the type of battery you supply with the kits. Nonetheless, this fact has not motivated your company to do everything in its power to help prevent such damage to the battery you supplied. Instead, you have dallied at my expense, when promptness was the need of the moment.

I look forward to a prompt reply relevant to the points i have raised.

Best regards,

There are other things as well, particularly one aspect of the way they do business. Many of their kits are being sold by postal order. BionX must know of this, yet BionX will use this as an excuse not to honour warranty because they will only do so if the installation is done by a dealer. No doubt BionX enjoys the benefit of having these kits sold in such a manner, but don't seem too keen when it comes to the obligation side of things. That attitude also help creates problems because they supply nothing in the way of instructions to assist with installations. I messed my installation up. Fair enough I have to pay for the wires I damaged in the process, but that damage could have easily been avoided if BionX didn't have this close shop mentality and faced the reality that many of their kits are being installed by buyers without dealers. Instead, they use it as an excuse not to provide support. It didn't help that the seller didn't send any instructions or respond to my emails seeking information and assistance, but that is a different issue. The installation isn't difficult once you know how or have instructions. Now that I've had a practise run at it, albeit an expensive one, I am pretty confident about my next attempt, but instructions would still be better to have.

To make a contrast between two ways a company can work. I bought a trike from ICE in the UK. It arrived in a box and I had to put it together. Putting it together was more complex than installing the BionX system but they sent detailed instructions and responded very quickly to any need for further information. One time I called them about something which didn't make sense to me, when I was disconnected because of line failure, but then I realised what the problem was in the meantime, but nonetheless THEY RANG ME BACK INTERNATIONALLY within a few minutes to make sure everything was ok. Damn that was impressive!

I'm also concerned about my long term use of the kit by what I am reading around the net by other users complaining about technical failures. There are satisfied customers, to be sure, so there are some good signs, but the fact is there also quite a lot of people experiencing technical failures with the BionX system. Each of those failures must lead to a long period of being without electric assistance while BionX deals with the repair the way they do.

What is wrong with BionX- they are heavily touted, surprised to hear that anyone had an issue with them!!

I reckon you aren't looking around enough. I am reading of a lot of problems with this system from disgruntled users. "Tout" is the right word though, BionX have that part of their operation working well.

Bionx it seems like a dream, WAKE-UP the battery is over price to replace,The motor lacks power it peddle assist only. But it is a kit. And costly. And seem's to run for a long time.

The 350 and 500 versions come with a throttle in addition to the pedal assist system. With the 250 versions the throttle control is an option. It sounds like you are referring to the 250 basic system.

To BionX's credit, they are covering the repair to my motor under warranty, which is something I did not expect or even ask for, but they are digging in about the charger replacement. I think they are blaming the dealer for that because he didn't set the switch for Europe before sending it.

I've had some interesting email exchanges with them over the last week. One thing I didn't appreciate them doing is delaying the sending out of the repaired motor and replacement charger until the dealer fixed up his account with BionX. Something which has nothing to do with me, an outstanding account of some type, meant BionX holding back my items. That's really bad business from my perspective.

Cammy now claims to be selling "Wildness Kit"....and has two different photos for the same kit, one of which bears a passing resemblance {enough to confuse some buyers} to the Aotema/Wilderness Energy sensorless kits.....here is the "offending" {my opinion only} image....

yes! avoid conhis motors! they have my money and i have nothing. and all they do is lie, lie lie...

I've ordered 2 separate times using PayPal - one end of Nov 2009 and the other late Jan 2010. For my 2nd order I requested a couple extra spokes and they supplied me enough to redo both of my wheels - 20" & 26". I can't complain about their service and the motor. Both running good and efficient. Communication can be challenging at times but my rep worked very hard to make my experience a pleasant one.

More details please because I find this post suspect - username only for bashing Conhismotor with 1 post...

They do have a forum and I see plenty of recent communication with customers:
