New Bafang Crank-Drives

My 36 volt/18 amp/46 tooth, BBS-01 arrived from BTN (advertised as 250 watt version), and is installed. Nice unit, I suspect my battery is now the weak link in the system. Will do it's first commute on Monday.

Notes.
Won't work without the display connected.
Max speed could be set as high as 40km/h.
C963 display has power (watt) readout.

Questions.
When entering settings mode on C963 what are the first two options? (I kept pressing mode until i was setting speed limit). Will try and take a photo.
Can the aux control panel be removed from the C963 display?

The rohloff hub is used in the optibikes; it can take that 1000w-2000w that they dump out from a stall..
Expensive though O_O

Kind of defeats the point of a crank drive however.. just run any old motor to it..

What batteries do you have...you need one with 30amp peak or you will kill the battery.

This is previous post:

Installed a cheap mod Watt meter on my BBS01/bottlebattery 9Ah/BH neo battery 9Ah....I think drawing ~28Amp from Neo battery killed the BMS?

My morning commute ~18kms – started with 39V
36.77Vm – voltage minimum
27.85Ap – Peak Amps
140.6Wh – Wh used
4.106Ah – Ah used
1022.9Wp – Peak Watts

Cheap 36 volt, 8.8ah bottle battery. Similar to this but from Greenbikekit.com (their site is down).

lol... same as mine which gets me 20kms full charge. Its crap..loss power, voltage sag and you will kill it eventually... with 28 amp draw. I had to parallel the battery with Neo Battery(samsung battery) and 28amp killed the Neo BMS.

With C961 display, you can reset trip meter by holding power and minus few seconds.
I don't know how to reset ODO-meter, but why would one want to reset the ODO-meter?

Does anyone have an easy way to wire brake cut off to hydraylic brakes? I think I saw a few brake mods here in ES.
I hate how the PAS keeps pushing the bike up to two seconds after I stop pedalling. Sometimes I'm braking against the motor because of that delay.
I thought there were a cutoff time setting for PAS, but I was wrong as it was a backlight cutoff timer.
I guess I have to disconnect the PAS wires in the motor and rewire a on/off-switch for PAS to handlebar.

Thanks Tom!. So many possible ways to mod a hydraulic brake cut off.
Here is a picture of Bafang's brake lever disassembled.

The yellow rod is pushing a little magnet (and a spring). Since the connector has three pins I assume this is HAL-Switch, and not reed switch.

Could you disassemble the switch and mount the magnet and sensor on the hydraulic brake lever somewhere where they move close together when the lever is pulled?

I didn't take photo of the switch disassembly as I dodn't have a macro lens.
I would not try to make a custom switch from these components because others who have tried to set up a HAL-switch have complained how hard it is to set up.
The switch works fine as it is. I would either find a way to mount without dissassembling, or buy a add-on brake sensor like this http://www.aliexpress.com/item/elec...or-for-Hydraulic-Brake-System/1117778378.html

Can anyone with a bbs01 measure the distance of peddles from the frame of the bike. bbs01 diagram makes me think the right peddle could be sticking out 15mm more than the left peddle (difference is 3mm on my standard bike).

Don't worry about it. The important thing is the chain line and that is correct at 50mm. As long as the left crank clears the chain stay, you'll be OK. The cranks supplied in the kit tend to be a little flat.

You might like to consider that there are over a dozen different combinations of shaft length and offset found on bikes and there is only one shaft length/offset combo for a BBS01.

Time to ride ...

Melbourne, I think you can safely assume your 350w unit is a bit unusual, ie. broken current limiting. I have a 250w BBS01 and I get about 50km per charge on a bottle battery but I don't ride everywhere in power mode with the thumb throttle jammed wide open. Being able to pull 28A means you have a problem and it's not the battery.

Hi folks,

been watching this thread closely for a while now hoping for a solution to a problem I have. I've got a BBS01 250W unit with a C950 display and I can't find a way to reset the trip meter.

I know the firmware has changed from that described in the manual. Option 3 in setup is supposed to clear the trip meter but it sets the back light level for the display.

Would appreciate any updated info.

TIA

Yes, I know what "chainline" is. My question was what the 50mm dimension was in reference too. I am presuming you mean from the centre of the bottom bracket to the chain ring but just want to confirm.

That is what "chain line" is unless it has been redefined lately. I wish it was a bit less then I could get to the lowest two gears of my 8 sprocket cassette even though I don't seem to need them. I guess beggars can't be choosers?

It is in the documentation that can be found early in this thread.

Well actually chain line has lots of variations depending on the bike. I have not read what the actual chainline measurement for this drive is hence my question. Thanks for the patronising replies

Concerned at this stage with ergonomics of the crank drive, probably not a concern for most, but not uncommon for me to ride 5+ hours on recumbent so a 15mm difference in peddle symmetry could aggravate my already aggravated knee's. aka.... http://windinmyface.com/blog/2013/20130313_3-pedal-symmetry.html

Just realized that bicycle pedal extenders are available so isn't a show stopper.

Sorry.. yep... forgot. I had changed the wheel setting to 14inch... so yes its running without current limited...lol

Today I fell sideways twice (we have snow and ice here in Finland) and I bent both cranks a bit. Cranks are cheap to replace (if they are standard fit), but I'm a bit conserned about the bottom bracket axle ends. I hope they are undamaged.
Anyway, I'm going to install this motor to my velomobile, and then it is impossible to bent cranks anymore. I must install studded tyres quickly to prevent more accidents with my upright bike.

bent cranks be falling sideways... I better get some old shimano cranks the bafang ones woun't be good for jumping...

Can not for the life of me get the damn throttle to work on my 250w 36v bafang with the C961. Have gone through all the settings and advanced settings.

PAS works fine but throttle not working with or without peddling....any ideas?

Those bottle batteries will generally dish up about 14 to 15 amps only before the BMS kicks in. In about another week I should have a chance to run mine with a few different LiPO solutions, then bypass the controller soon after that.
