Nexus 7 strong enough for mid drive?

I have a cargo bike with Nexus inter 7 typed on it. It has internal gears, no brake (I use hand brake).

Can you use a BBS02 500W/750W on those gears? Or will they soon wear out or break? I have no experience with this but if that is likely I will probably go for DD hub motor instead (20" front).

I believe that it is a good match with the BBS02. If you are certain that it is the 7-speed, then the 3rd gear is likely to be the strongest. Check to see if it's model number is listed as having a 1:1 ratio for 3rd gear.

The model is SG-C3000-7R.

Does not have a 1:1 if I understand correct.
Link below says:
Ratio - 0.632 - 0.741 - 0.843 - 0.989 - 1.145 - 1.335 - 1.545.

What does this say? No strong gears, usless for BBS02? Or could work anyway?

I haven't seen anything that shows it *can't* be used, especially if the middrive has a ramp-up to power rather than slamming it on. Then you can also use the throttle (if you have one, rather than PAS) to ramp it up slowly, too.

FWIW, if you don't need as big a gearing range and don't mind the step size, you can use a 3 speed instead. I've had three different brands and at least two different kinds of 3 speeds, and they all have a 1:1 direct drive gear, where they basically just lock the input shaft to the shell (so it's strength limit isn't in the gears themselves in that ratio).

Mine are all older types, but newer ones probably do too.

And being less gears, but probably the same width, the other two gears are probably stronger by at least a little, than one with narrower gears/more of them. That's an assumption that may be completely unfounded, however, so you'd have to check into that. ;)

Also, I have not yet run anything other than leg power thru any of them, though the plan is to eventually do so. ;)

I *do* have the trikes' pedal drivetrain geared way down so at lowest gear it can pull the heavily loaded trike along, albeit at a very very low speed, in pedal only, even with my bad joints, for at least short distances between rests. Just in case something happens to the power system.

The 7 speed will require you to depower the throttle when shifting. It's an inherent trait meant to save the internal gears. You get used to it.

I think the hardest part of a Nexus 7 IGH and BBS is anticipating the gear choice for the climb ahead. It's not a deal breaker, but does require coordination which comes naturally after some time.

More money... I guess it's the one that cost 45 $ on em3ev.

But anyhow I have now decided to go with front hub motor on my 20" wheel. It was 50/50 what to choose but then I took my cargo bike out of the basement door and saw that the clearence on the doorstep will never make a motor hanging down. Sure Maybe I can rebuild that doorstep somehow but there may be other obsticales elsewhere. Plus front motor will save my gears and other stuff. Sure there are downsides with the front motor too but that's how it is.

I am pretty sure you will see more upsides. Quiet and maintenance free.
