Castlemaine - Ballarat Event Sep 4
Hello people,
we’re excited to be arriving in Castlemaine tomorrow (Sep 3) and will be
holding a meet and greet session on Wed Sep 4 from 9:30am at the Hub, at
233 Barker St Castlemaine (in the back garden area). It will be an informal
gathering to gawk at and test ride our electric bikes and ask us anything
about them (other than whether they charge while you pedal).
When that wraps up we’ll embark on a scenic and slow ride to Ballarat via
Daylesford. All welcome to join!

I am planning on coming up and joining you guys for the ride from Castlemaine to Ballarat. Just working out the logistics now. 80km on a friction drive might be a new record :)

That would be awesome, looking forward to seeing you again! I'm sure the friction drive can do the distance.

Day 32 photos Tuesday continued

The Bike Vault in Castlemaine started selling electric bicycles around four months ago and have been enjoying spreading the joy of riding to a broader audience.
They’ve got a lovely shop, professional attitude towards quality of products and service. Would make a great ezee dealer for the Goldfields area!

Latest stats from the past 3 days:

Day 30 - Coonalpyn to Natimuk, 257 km (4396 km to date)

59.6 Ah
2159.3 Wh
62.5 ave pedal RPM

Day 31 - Natimuk to Avoca, 170 km (4566 km to date)

40.5 Ah
1501.5 Wh
61.9 ave pedal RPM

Day 32 - Avoca to Castlemaine, 85 km (4651 km to date)

24.3 Ah
893.3 Wh
57.9 ave pedal RPM

We hit a new daily distance record for this trip on Day 30 at 257 km and it was also the first day I went over 2kWh (my total battery capacity). To do it, we did a 2hr mid day charge which recharges 16 amp-hours of my 56 ah total. We've done mid-day recharging on a handful of days but this is the first time I would have definitely have run out if we hadn't stopped for the mid day top up. Much nicer to arrive with a bit in the tank than moving on pedals alone!

Tomorrow we ride Castlemaine to Ballarat, then Ballarat to Melbourne CBD by train where we'll spend 2 nights.

I am in for tomorrow! Woo hoo !

I'll be bringing a friction drive too on my road bike. Meeting up with full-throttle (and maybe Keepler ???) at Southern Cross station about 7:30am tomorrow, then training it out, arriving @ 9:26am in Castlemaine.

See you soon guys !

Nah. I have done more than that in one hit before. :D

It's gonna be a ripper day! See you guys then...

Day 31 Wednesday

Portraits of today’s riders Castlemaine to Ballarat except for Sam.
We had three eZees, two friction drives Commuter Boost and Kepler Drive, one hub motor conversion and one single speed human powered rider who showed us all up :)
Thanks also to Morgan for riding us out of town and Neil for riding us out to the cafe at Guildford.
A great day all around. 100km of scenic and hilly riding via Hepburn Springs,

Great to catch up with everyone and becoming a small part of this epic journey.

Those eZee's were loaded up to the max but doing it easy. Testament to just how well these bikes are built. Especially impressed by the level of craftsmanship on those titanium frames.

Thanks to Sam for kind of hosting this leg and organizing stops and refreshments along the way. Sam's choice of bike was err, interesting for 100km ride through some hilly country. I am tipping he is feeling it today especially after running out of juice just before a monster hill into Hepburn Springs. Luckily Maurice was close by to give him a bit of push up the hill.

Full-Throttle was nearly banned from attending the ride for not having a motor :p . Turns out he really didn't need one anyway with him out front much of the time on a steel framed single speed roadie.

And finally friction drives were back in force with both Adrian and I enjoying the light weight but sizable shove proved by these under appreciated devices. Numerous hills encountered on this ride were eaten with ease by both setups. I ended up using just 260 W/hr for the 100km ride and although plenty of pedaling was done to achieve this economy, every climb we encountered was turned into flat road and handled with ease.

Finished the day with great pub meal overlooking the lake in Ballarat.

Once again, thanks to everyone who attended. It was a thoroughly enjoyable ride from start to finish.

Absolute cracker of a day. Thanks for letting us all join your journey and get a glimpse of what electric bike touring would be like.

Like Kepler the relaxed pace meant a very efficient ride. With a slightly large battery than Kepler, I managed to make the whole 100km with juice to spare. With 290wh required to charge the pack back up once home. Meaning we averaged <3wh/km. Not as impressive as full-throttle's 0wh/km. But I was pretty glad to have the assist. I think voicecoils used about 1000wh. Goes to show how much more battery you need when you have a fully laden cargo bike versus a light weight road bike.

Managed a top speed of 72kph on one of the decents which was fun.
No idea what the average speed was, but I think Ching was cruise at around 25-28kph on the flats, which meant I didn't need the electric assist a lot of the time.

Thanks again, and good luck for the rest of the trip.

- Adrian

Running out of juice on an ebike just before a hill when one is accustomed to the power is one of the worst things in the universe. But what was wrong with Sam's bike otherwise ?? My spine feels uneasy in sympathy looking at those skinny tyres, but it seems many of you are running those.

Full-Throttle was nearly banned from attending the ride for not having a motor
Typical full-throttle, going against the grain
I want to make an "in mother Russia" joke, but I wont :p

That's incredible efficiency from the friction drives guys. Good work! Even if you dialed up the power and cut back on the pedalling effort it sounds like they'd still be a clear winner.
I'm interested to see what my own efficiency will be like with a geared motor when I join the gloworm guys on their final leg. I don't think I've ever ridden an ebike at sub 30km/hr for any distance longer than the end of my driveway

Skinny tires are okay if you take some of the load on you hands and legs, but with the bolt upright position and low seat meant that seat was not Sams best friend.

But still surprised he burnt through two bottle batteries.

I ended up just peddling when feeling social as I didn't need the assist to go 25ish, or riding at about 40kph with the assist when bored or when I felt the need to speed off.

Meh.. that bike has accomplished much more than that.
I was more impressed by the yanagi waving toddler on top of an exposed platform where we had lunch. Right in front of his mother
And the overall attitude of the Glow Worm crew. These guys seem as relaxed as if they started the journey that morning.
I haven't seen a titanium e-bike before either.

Oh, and the DH track in Ballarat looks like fun

Ching's bike about to melt down from the intense stare.

Gee we really do look serious!
The ergonomics of my bike were daft. After the roobaix I have a keen eye for inappropriate bikes. :p

The daft combo of a 19t rear sprocket and 20 amp shunt used up maybe 600whr for 104km. Bike cruised at 28kph but you can't pedal over 22kph. Haha. As a result I only pedalled appreciably on the hepburn hills with Maurice assisting greatly. Thanks Maurice.

We're in Holbrook tonight and continuing towards Canberra tomorrow.

Hoping to see more E-S riders in Canberra. We'll be riding over Black Mountain and Mount Ainslie and would love anyone to join us for as long as your batteries last (turning back when you're half empty or earlier is recommended!) as we head to Pushys Bike Warehouse in Fyshwick. Then we'll continue to Bungendore and on to the South Coast. Join for as much as suits!

Meet at Black Mountain Peninsula at 7:30AM Tuesday Sept 10th. RSVP to Maurice 0433 622 640

Dang, wish I had an ebike at the moment to do this with you Abraham...I think I recently cooked the windings on the HS4065 on my Fighter as it's been out of action for a few weeks now.
I've even got another ebike as well now...some old commuter that was given to me for free, not too dissimilar to the type you sell, but it's got a busted BB and can't seem to find a replacement long enough at 200mm wide!

Anyway, hope you enjoy your pass through Canberra. If your heading through Bungendore, be sure to stop and checkout the woodwork's gallery. It's pretty impressive!

Cheers

Abraham my photobucket account is now full.

Need to start another account. At the moment not able to post any more photos on this account.

Well done guys on your last few weeks its been quite an amaizing journey to follow, very inspiring.

Did you guys get the train from up Ballarat way back down to Melbourne to check out bike shops there ?

tumblr_mso92jYnyE1sxa2p9o2_1280.jpg

On the road, at Tarcutta having a rest stop.

@Hyena: We took a train from Southen Cross in Melbourne to Albury to cut out ~350km to make up time. By doing so we gave ourself the chance to visit Melbourne and still finish on time. We had originally planned to skip it by heading straight across from Adelaide. We also took a train from Ballarat into Melbourne CBD. Despite all the 'cheating' on the train, we've almost cracked 5000 km!
