Recommendations for mirrors?

I need mirrors that are really sturdy and I need them to be very tall, maybe a foot high. I can't find anything really that tall. I'm tired of looking down. My neck hurts

Well, there are plenty of long bicycle mirrors in the world. I can't recommend any because I never use them. However what I have done is get a tall goose-neck and tall handle bars so I don't have to bend over so much and unnaturally crick my neck.

Can you simply get a taller handlebar?

:D :bolt:

What a delicate flower!

Helmet mirror
Glasses mirror
Handlebar end mirror on the end of a clip-on aerobar

Or just turn your head around to have a look, if it doesn't hurt your neck.

Only one of my bikes has a mirror (on the left bar end). That one works kind of okay because those bars are 30 inches wide. On any of my other bikes I'd mostly be looking at some part of myself.

Lol E, I DID. But couldn't figure out how they mount. Plus They still look short. Ok well I was hoping you 100 GW guys would know something. I guess I'll get something functional for $20

Yeah I thought about that but that throws off my geometry. Plus I like pedaling and you look stealthier ( faster/ racer style) more 90 degrees. I had some mirrors but snapped em when I crashed

Do you mean mirrors that are actually a foot tall, or mirrors that are mounted a foot above your handlebars?

If the former, box-truck mirrors are a quick find;
https://www.amazon.com/Truck-Side-Mirrors/s?k=Truck+Side+Mirrors
I've seen them over a foot and a half tall, but their mounts are not useful for bicycle handlebars, and you'd have to come up with a mount system; some might be easy, others aren't. (I looked at these for my SB Cruiser trike to hang from the canopy rather than using bar-mounted ones, havent' ever settled on any though so still using bar-mounted mirrors).

If the latter, any number of mirrors can work, but you have to either find or DIY a longer stem to mount them with. There's a number of solutions for this problem.

I mount MC mirrors
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=tall+Motorcycle+mirrors&crid=1BR67RJC13712&sprefix=tall+motorcycle+mirrors%2Caps%2C187&ref=nb_sb_noss_1
to bicycle handlebars with old seatpost clamps because I have htem laying around; couple of examples:
https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15570&p=268272&hilit=seatpost+mirror#p268272
https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=40064&p=585394&hilit=seatpost+mirror#p585394
but they make handlebar mirror mount clamps
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Motorcycle+mirror+handlebar+clamps&crid=1T25OC2E0PQSW&sprefix=motorcycle+mirror+handlebar+clamps%2Caps%2C141&ref=nb_sb_noss_2
that fit various bar tube sizes that have MC mirror sized threaded holes; Amazon has a number of them and they're available elsewhere as well (ebay, aliexpress, MC parts stores, etc).

The stems are still generally shorter than you want, however, so if you don't find ones long enough for your needs you have to either extend them or replace them. They do make extensions for MC mirror stems,
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Motorcycle+mirror+stem+extensions&crid=3QHOKKQ8CSCWO&sprefix=motorcycle+mirror+stem+extensions%2Caps%2C128&ref=nb_sb_noss
so that's a non-DIY option. They come in straight or angled versions, depending on where you want the mirrors to end up.

Yup.

Yup.

Nope. This is part of stupid "I'm too cool to use a mirror" bicycle culture that will get you killed, like riding three abreast.

Grasshopper you do not need to see to know. You can fill what you can not see. Grasshopper can you see the wind but you know it's there.
Can you see a fart but you know it's there.

If you ride a bike instead of a chair, you can easily turn around for a look. That's why normal bikes, both fashion-addled and utilitarian, aren't usually equipped with mirrors. When you get a bike that has a kickstand, fenders, luggage racks, bell, chainguard, and built-in lights, it still won't come with a mirror-- because it doesn't need one.

As I said before, I have one bike with a mirror. But when I ride it, I usually turn my head if I really want to know what's going on back there.

Racing HPVs sometimes have cameras and video for their front view. That's because they need them when the rider is lying flat on his back in a windowless streamlined coffin. And for similar reasons, open recumbents need mirrors because their riders are stuck in a potato-like position. But real bikes don't.

Though only a few inches, i find take a look mirror attached to the specs (can be attached to helmet as well) helpful, heard about it from ES itself

I ride upright bikes, as well as recumbents. I can turn around just fine on my recumbent. I was riding bikes before you were born. When I was young and foolish, we didn't use mirrors, or helmets. As an adult I started using both.

Unless you are omniscient, which you clearly imagine you are, you won't know you need to turn around to look.

A woman was killed on a very remote highway in Washington by a driver who was on heroin and fell asleep at the wheel. Worst part is he left he out there to die because there were no witnesses. I'd like to think with mirrors she could have seen him coming. Cars can be very quiet sometimes.Especially if hard of hearing or wearing a full face helmet like I do

https://www.q13fox.com/news/bicyclist-killed-in-hit-and-run-on-sr-7-identified-as-66-year-old-eatonville-woman

And I guess people don't understand what I was talking about. I wanted a mirror with a STEM that was a foot tall so I don;t have to crane my neck so much. But then someone started talking about a FOOT tall mirror itself, which actually isn't a bad idea either because small mirrors suck. Not sure how the weight and aerodynamics of that would play in. Also would look crazy lol

If you were riding bikes in the sixties, then hats off to you for still being flexible enough to turn around without dismounting.

Except when I'm in very noisy surroundings like freeway intersections, I can usually hear stuff behind me before it's close enough to be a concern. No omniscience necessary.

Correct, we could not know, so I asked you the question of which one you meant, because your post was worded a bit ambiguously, but implied you need mirrors that were themselves actually that tall:

I need mirrors that are really sturdy and I need them to be very tall, maybe a foot high.

Now that you have clarified which one you were after, I would recommend looking at the other info I posted there
https://endless-sphere.com/forums/posting.php?mode=quote&f=3&p=1730365#pr1730254
regarding stem extensions and handlebar clamps for mounting motorcycle mirrors. Then you can use a combination of the various parts to accomplish your goal.

If you instead (or in addition) decide to use very tall mirrors, you may have to figure out a mounting adapter from them to the stems / mounting clamps; if the ones you use don't already have the same threading / mounting method as the MC mirrors do.

Something else to consider for very large long/tall mirrors is the shape of their mass may not balance very well on the single stem, and it may wiggle more than it would on the two-plus-mounting-point vehicle mounts they commonly use, that usually hold them from both ends. Depends on the stiffness of the mounts used on the bike along with the mounting/pivot method used on the mirror itself.

Yes. I was riding my Raleigh Grand Prix in the 1960s...until it was stolen outside an A&W Root Beer stand. Replaced by a Frejus.

If you think you would hear our Bolt EV coming up behind you, you are wrong. Hell, I have been startled to see a diesel pickup in my take-a-look mirror, cresting the hill I had just started down. He was moving at a high rate of speed, and was at my rear wheel in seconds. Had I not had the mirror, I would not have had time to take the edge of the pavement. I don't recall hearing anything, until he was flying by. A bit of wind, especially a headwind, can prevent your hearing even a loud vehicle.

Something like this. Just straight and tall at 10 inches. I wonder if it would fit on bicycle handlebars

https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Chrome-Clamp-Mirror-Motorcycle/dp/B07NDPPQ1F/ref=sr_1_37?keywords=long+stem+motorcycle+mirrors&qid=1661845236&sr=8-37

I don't get it. I use many of the commonly available OTS bicycle rearview mirrors that plug into the handlebar end. MTB style bikes. Low- or no-rise handlebars. No neck craning required. Set the mirror position so by simply moving my eyes, and maybe my head a little, I can get a good view rearwards. I don't get it. Big mirrors close to my head, don't like the idea. What happens in a crash, shards of sharp glass flying near my face?

The geometry on your bike is probably different. Maybe your handlebars are set higher sort of like a dutch bike. You are probably right about a huge mirror being a dumb idea, I guess I'll go for the foot long stem
