Sur-Ron - New Mid drive Bike

Why not have both?
Because if your motor power is in abundance, then multiple motor gears don't help. They only add weight, expense, complexity, points of failure, and interruption in power delivery when you switch gears.

The first Tesla (Roadster) was intended to have a two speed transmission, but ultimately that feature was abandoned because there were technical problems with it and it didn't improve performance. They never returned to that plan for other models.

I agree with Chalo. A few electronic upgrades to a sur-ron can give you an abundance of torque. It just seldom worth the complexity of the multispeed.

If some design constraint forces you to use a very small motor AND you need a huge difference in operating speed then maybe its worth pursuing. So if your sur ron needs to tow 500lbs uphill but also highway commute then maybe a 2 speed would help. But given that people are running 40kw sur rons with just electrical upgrades its hard to believe anyone needs shiftable gears.

FWIW, there are a number of (long) threads discussing the advantages and disadvantages of multigear drivetrains vs single-speed, in various usages and situations. The Xenforo search doesn't find them very easily, but a google site search of this forum probably would.

"Can't help myself but loving this e-motorcycle! Few little upgrades here and there and it's perfect. :)" Gasser
"A 60% scale motorcycle is great if you're a 60% scale human. I'm a 125% scale human and Sur-ron looks like a little kid's toy." Chalo
"Sur-Ron - New Mid drive Bike first offered by DT(45) aka the orange man of e-bikes now persona non grata." Maj. Tom
"Two-speed belt drive on the Sur Ron would be sick!!"
"It's probably cheaper and...."Chalo

Meanwhile months ago and now on sale during the prime season the Mad Genius Eric Hicks created another dependable popular profitable electric motorcycle Talaria Sting R MX 4 Trail Bike upon which I would break my neck.

(didn't see replies until now)

I guess you didn't look at the link I posted? It's extremely simple, no gear box or oil required. They claim the entire drive train system weighs less than a chain alone!

Doubling the power of the battery, controller and possibly motor wouldn't come without its own expenses and weight. It's not available for sale yet, but I'm guessing it would be a fraction of the cost and weight.

Running double power poses its own set of problems. Seems like it would take its toll on a stock motor and controller failure more likely.

Has anyone tested a 2025 Light Bee battery yet? The 2024 battery I have seems pretty great. It allows up to 160A peak discharge. I thought the 2025 was supposed to switch to Samsung 50S cells, which could allow even more.

I have a 60V Su-Ron battery that I want to use for another project. I see it has an RS-485 port for BMS communication. Has anyone been able to crack the RS-485 protocol and communicate with the BMS?

Has anyone had any experience with the 2025 Sur Ron light bee battery (with the square connector)? I installed one on my 2018 bike along with the battery comm harness and it does not power on the discharge port with the key switch. It will briefly power on when I tap the button on the battery or when I plug in the charger, but it doesn't stay on. I suspect the new battery requires communication on the RS 485 port to turn on.

I had previously installed a 2024 battery on my bike and it also would not power on the discharge port until the key switch signal was applied. But, that was all it required and then worked well. I found that the 2024 battery allowed up to 160A discharge, which offered a big power increase.

I am curious if the 2025 battery will allow even more, since supposedly the new battery contains Samsung 50S cells and the 2025 bike had a 25% power increase.

Been eyeballing the Surrons for ages. Finally joined the club. Now I just have to go through and see what the previous owner children did to this bike in 1.5 years. Also get to work through getting a plate on this thing so I can use it when traveling.
