Perhaps for 2012 some ebiker could add audio... some sort of horrendous sound to drown out the rest of the field? OK, could be something like Ride Of The Valkyries... just w/enough base to rattle skulls more attuned to weedwhacker music... Bonus points if audio track multiplexed over power to motor coils...

Hey Luke if you aint going to run a hubbie? how about a perm!! there are issues getting them on a bike, Agni power for the win! worked for the TT races  Thats the spirit though come back next time with something better... I knew that was you under the helmet as it sounded like john in CR sped up   great show Luke! I really like the idea of racing ebikes!

Quite they sound bloomin horrible dont they, on the video from last years race I had to mute the sound in the end as even on the lowest setting it was getting on my tits! ha ha

This is one of my earliest recollections of electric vehicles... Watching a vid of electric car racers on a closed track yelling at one another simply because they could hear themselves over the sound of their silent motors... Living/racing 1/2 my life under silent sails, this is how the real world works

Well done guys !!! 8)

When AJ finally wakes up.. he's gonna just love this...

!

Your a bit behind my North American friend  :p i was posting pics
throughout the day as Luke emailed them to me from his phone, i was aware of the
winner not long after the race finished when Luke emailed results and pics to post for him... :p
But yes, i was extremely happy for PaulD and the fact an 'RC setup' took the
honors
ESPECIALLY beating two very very fast riders on higher powered 9-10hp Morini 2 strokes.

I found it funny Dave31 listed PaulDs bike over at motorbicycling
as more powerful than the morinis though hahaha come now Dave you hang here you know very
well you were beaten by a bike with less power than your Morini! PaulD's outstanding riding
skills were too much for the stink bike riders muahahaa...

Was also smiling ear to ear when Luke made this comment on page 21

Hubmotors don't really belong in racing it seemed. RC bikes have plenty of
reliability challenges, but the motors are so much better suited towards racing. Just the controller/reduction
system makes it tough.

Is our boy finally getting this frock business out of his system?...i hope! :p

Liveforphysics said:
The x5 motor simply isn't powerful. We hit it with a truckload of
voltage and current and it just disappointed me with its soggy performance, and it was
even in a small rim.

Next year, custom frame. Massive non-hub motor. Less battery. Less tire. And
most important, getting ready a month early for testing/development time.

I certainly hope this little foray from the Dark Side is out of your system my good friend? can
we now push forward on new non frock setups instead of playing with these heavy underpowered
outdated poorly made frock motors please Luke, hrmzzz? :p

Yes YPedalMaN...i'm pretty happy this morning still HAHAH

Congrats again PaulD WinnAGH of the 2011 Death Race
Are you going to publicly chop the prize (a 2 stroke China Gurl motor) up
with an angle grinder and post video of this on YouTube? LoL

Well done too all, i really feel for DoGMaN and Thud
they were preparing for this race for months, I think
both will take alot from this years death race and be back next
year with more reliability...Amberwolf, i hope your ankle
heals up quickly and you don't miss any days off as a result.

Look forward to more video and stills of the nights
events...

Honestly I could hear the whine of Pauld 's turnigy more, because it was a higher pitch than the stinkies. I could hear them coming as they passed me, but I couldn't smell Pauld

That video, with the exception Luke being super excited and dogman being off on the side of the track probably pissed as hell, was about as fun as a tin can full of wasps. Definitely needs more ride of the Valkyries.

Looks pretty fast from the video..the gassers that ride here have an advantage in that they know the circuit, I am pretty sure a well setup hubbie would be able to compete?? that said I am well pleased an RC bike won as they need a shot in the arm as far as reliability goes, it looks pretty certain to me from what I have seen so far that sensored is the way to go with an RC setup if you want reliability and RC esc if you want mega power on a knife edge..

I used to ride 2 strokes they never sounded as horrible as these things :? ewww and some people think RC drives are noisy  so looking forward to seeing more footage from the race, I have a kart track a few miles from me  I may sneak on there with my bike sometime.

Hey Luke you were riding in CR in sandals and a shirt...but here full leathers and a helmet!! big shame the motor let you down :( I hope AW is feeling better, thats quite an ask racing that track if you havent done it before esp at night as well.
Yep. And I am glad that an ebike Paul won the race and because he won. Because, he won as an electric and I the humble wineboyrider finished the race with a 36v ping 20 ah battery, lyen 9fet controller and a bmc motor won best ebike category, because I finished baby! I had so much damn fun I hope to build a bmc motor that can place in the real heat maybe 7th?????

no matter how much power it was feed it :p ....what won the death race again OH thats right
an RC SETUP GO PaulD youo freakin LEGEND!!! Turnigy 80-100 130kv FTMFW  :p LoL

Although luke crashed my bmx he never managed to wreck it!!!

He got mine hit by an ocean wave, and we just had to dry out the hall connector and were right back on the road. Luke proof is a piece of cake. He can ride my bikes any time. 8) AW otoh, I will definitely have to tune down so he doesn't kill himself. 8)

AW, I sure hope it's just a sprain and that you're feeling better quick.

Let's talk a bit about the setup performances our electric bike had.

I have read few times on that thread that these gasser was pretty well tuned..

now what about our ebikes.

Congrat to PaulD the winner of the race.

Now let put on hold the driving skill and lets tak about the best setup for these kind of race.

Now for some stats:
12 laps in the main event, 0.79 mi laps, starting voltage 76.1v (4.23 v/cell), Vmin 66.7, Amax 56.7, maxS 44.3, Ave S. 31, 6.8ah 483wh consumed, 47 wh/mi.
Drive: 1.7:1 8mm pitch, 15mm width primary belt reduction with ENO hidden inside 48T pulley, 6.15:1 219 chain secondary, sprocket on rotor mount of hub, total reduction 10.5:1, Turnigy 130kv 80/100 with external halls at 17.1degree spacing
Controller: ebikes.ca 40 amp 12 fet infineon, modified resistors for high voltage, and shunt soldered about 15-20% of its length
Batteries: Secret lithium ion pouch cells 18S2P, 20ah x 66v.
Bike weight unknown, but we guessed 60-65lbs.

The sweet spot of his power band seemed to be around 25-35 mph. I was quicker up to 25 and over 35 I think.

According the the high number of curves on that track, and alot of braking and acceleration,

Would it be better to tune the RC gear setup to top speed to let say 30mph and have more power to around 10-15mph ?

Paul, if you would go back in time and make that race again, what would you change on the ebike to be more competitive ?

Thud?

haha pull your head in ya boofhead :p

When I rode your RC powered bike it had less go than my frock set up. I know they're capable of much more with more juice etc but the point is, that was with nearly double the power that PaulD ran. One of those turnigys on 50 amps puts them well in to frock territory. If Paul had of run with Lukes original motor with a sensible 100 amp current limit I dont doubt he would have won on that, and probably by a bigger margin too.

It's awesome Paul won and it's fantastic for the electric movement but really, in this case it was him as a rider that won the race, not what was powering his bike. One thing is for sure, next year will be interesting :)

Don't downplay how well PaulD's bike worked bro. My x5 got burned off the corners and down the straights by the morinis and thud and PaulD. And it wasnt for lack of feeding it enough power.

Hey aussie that was a different wheel that melted on the dyno IT WAS NOT AN X5!
Although a x5 should get some serious work before being used for racing!

etard wrote: What an amazing race! Too bad Thud didn't get to compete with even one motor, I think he would have been a contender. Paul's bike is completely homebuilt, the batteries are actually lithium cobalt I believe, and it seemed to be exactly the same speed as the two fast gassers. BUT, his max wattage was only about 3500w. He only used 7ah out of a 20ah pack at 66 volt. It goes to show that crazy power isn't everything, Paul reeally out rode those guys and finally got Alex with three laps to go by braking slightly later for turn one and passing him for the win! Alex ( blue gasser) was not happy, those guys had all sort of questions for Paul about his ride, not that they understood the half of it.
Yes, my chain wadded up my derialluer into my spokes, but then I tried again with those cheesy gasser tensioners and blew the chain with maybe too touchy throttle response? Either way, that little Hacker would not have made that whole race an I was only getting about 30 something mph, so back to the drawing boards for, and probably all of us. The gas guys were really cool, I can't say enough about the event. We all had a blast, and we might of even converted a fee guys to electric. You guys missed out. I took a bunch of photos and will post once I get home.
Had a blast with ya guys glad you came and hope you can again....? Glad your new hotel worked out for you and hope you made it home with your ebikes intact....lol!

So whens the next race?

Doc, did you catch Luke mentioned he would run with less battery if he did it over? this surprised
me especially coming from Luke! I am thinking weight is an issue possibly? Building super light
medium hp bikes.

@PaulD...you posted Thud was very quick, he obviously had the power on you but how about the
corners were you able to hang with the ol boy, then just beaten top end on the straights? I'm guessing
the ThudSTeR got up so serious speed on those straights when the two motors and 2 speed were running?

Going to be good to get post race info when the guys all get back home and post their pics and videos
anxiously awaiting hehe...

EDiT : about to hit enter and i see another comment(s) :p @ Hyena BWAHAHA what won again Jay :p :p :p
your definitely right about one thing PaulD out rode them ace performance by all accounts. How pissed would the guy
riding the morini that got passed 3 laps from the finish be haha Outstanding performance ;)
Jay, You wouldn't have lasted 2 laps before dumping it or high siding it on a corner :p

@Arl01 i stand corrected...they all look the same too me, oddly shaped and poorly made some can even turn
plastic into butter i believe?! :p   :p

Just havin a laugh guys... bout time us RC enthusiasts had a 'win'

This is getting real interesting . Often peoples perspective of what is fast can get in the way of the facts. There is nothing like a race and some data to sort everything out.

I am on the fence about the 3500w RC vs X5 .I have ridden my own 5304 on 72v 50amp controller that 3600w felt strong 40mph top end . Would be great to see some more video of the RC bike .I am thinking 100v and say 50amp controller in a x5. Would be faster top end and accelerate faster than a 3500w RC set up.

I found this one of the bike

Oh I didn't mean to put his bike down, I'm just saying he managed to triumph with quite a modest power level.
When you're talking about light weight bicycles power:weight plays a huge role. Thuds heavier weight was offset by more power but the 5303 was just the wrong wind for you. I guess it's good you had something to race on full stop and still have fun but a 5304 or maybe even a 5305 at the voltage you were running would have faired alot better against the others. I guess if you didnt want to stick with hubs for next year running a big scooter one like John's wouldn't be an issue with a custom modded rear end anyway.

Back to the power:weight thing - I dunno how much you weigh but from the pics it looks like you're a a fair bit heavier than Paul, plus the X5 is an additional weight penalty. Would it be fair to say you on your bike weighed nearly 50% more than Paul on his ? You'd have to be atleast a 1/3rd heavier.
I know from casual go kart racing, differences in karts aside (despite them all supposedly being the same power) the fastest guy is almost always the smallest.

How big was the guy that came in second on the gasser ?

AussieJester said:

Probably very true!
I don't have any proper racing experience on bikes and after several stacks and broken bones I think I'd be to shy too ride as aggressively as required through the corners to take a win. I'd storm the straights but defintely get taken in the corners by those more confident and experienced. I admit it, I'm more a drag racer and general hoon :p
