A whole new level of spun axles - what 10KW does to an X5

I dont even want to think about how they manufacture this stuff :?

LoL..not well is what springs to mind..

Hey methy.
I found the side covers on my x5 only have one spot that they can be placed to make it true. I actualy staked a indexing mark to know for future refernce to line it up again.

I took small engines in Junior high too.
I always mark my partrs - the covers were marked and they are lined up

The grinding is between the stator and the magnet ring.
The windings are all fine.

My stator was rubing the magnet ring when the side covers were not lined up in the right spot! One would think they would not machine this as a whole but..............................

Really?

I am having trouble visualizing that.... That would mean that the bearing hole was not centered on the covers.
If that were the case, the entire spinning assembly would be out of balance - HUMP HUMP HUMP

I guess I could try re-clocking the cover but. . . .
This is a V2. The covers seem fairly consistent to me and they spin absolutely true.

It is the relationship of the stator to the axle that I suspect.
It is also the only interface that has changed.

Yup I can take all the bolts out of either side cover and spin it to any other position and re install all the bolts and the outer edge of the hub will spin out of true and there is a spot or two where it rubs now of course it will make the rim out of true as well. At first I trued the rim every time I took the side covers off till I realized this was happening. I Dont know what version of x5 I have.

Methods, not sure if this was ever brought up. Why not use a couple of small RC outrunners with a ducted impeller mounted as your fan. High rpms. The controllers are cheap. A circuit could be made to turn on the fans when a temp threshold is met.

I agree.
On a bike that would feel a little funky but on a Recumbent trike that would be perfect.
Since I moved my 5305 over to a 20" wheel on my trike I dont have any overheating issues anymore

A ducted fan on 3S @ 30A (~300W) would provide extreme cooling. . . :)

I actualy talked about this on the air cooling an x5 thread. And I found 30mm outrunner ducted fans that would fit inside the stator so you could pull the air in through the one side and then you would just want a deflector to make it bend to blow on the windings. But the only 30mm ducted fans I found were Not good quality.

This came out recently, rather good quality compared to previous edf's this size. I plan to get one to put into a micro jet if I have time this winter. They have a 40mm version as well. If you remove the housing, you might be able to make space for the 40mm? I'm pretty sure these will out do any muffin fan. Fan unit isn't pressed on like the cheap GWS stuff. A PIC microcontroller and a temp sensor could easily be put together to control multiple ESC's. All that would be needed is external power. The rest should fit inside the motor. If a high voltage DC-DC can be found then you could just tap from the main packs.

Did somebody say uJet?

How about a 1,200W 6S 2200mah with a PH60 and a NEU 1110 2Y?

My uJet is faster than your uJet

and if that is not fast enough - then how about a VIP
Can anyone say "So fast that it is invisible?!?"

I meant a small jet, but I have one of those as well.

Not nearly as fast as yours. It’s actually running on 4 1100ma A123’s. Short run time but I can keep flying with 3 packs. I never noticed that was you on RC groups. I’m impressed, the small stuff at those speeds are tricky to fly. Ever since I took up Ebiking, I totally took a break from RC’s this year. I’ve been having too much fun riding the trails. I still read rcgroups to see anything cool that pops up. I eventually plan to fly by video, already have all the equipment, just not the time to pursue it. I want to glass my very last microjet, this guy did such a good glass job on his twinjet. I want to do something similar, just to learn the technique.
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2759381&d=1253053857 My main focus now is to finish my Motobecane, now that winter has set in and riding has taken a backseat. Currently working on a CF battery box.

Yeah, I wanted a Projeti, much cleaner airframe. Did you ever clock your Microjet? That pylon plane would be a crazy one to fly. My friend had micro stinger that looked very similar. It was hard to keep it in sight, a total blur in motion. Is that your wife chewing on the plane. Very funny, I guess she would have to be to put up with your antics. LOL when I saw pics of your welder in the livingroom.

I have totally dropped RC (though I still have thousands of dollars of stuff sitting around)
One day it is all I talk about and the next - not a peep.
I loved RC but the bikes are all consuming

That twinjet looks amazing! Beautiful!

That is my wife - she tends to chew on my planes...

The way I see it, I always wanted to fly myself. My latest trike is about as close as you can get to riding in an RC car.

Next time you're in the Seattle area, I gotta get you in a shifter-kart. Do neck exercises before you come, and bring a neck-brace for afterward.

Yeah, I’ve always seem to find a way back into RC’s. I did it when I was a kid and had a blast flying IC engines and gliders. Forgot all about it till a few years ago when I heard about the brushless stuff and lipo revolution. I had to get back into it then. When I ran across what people were doing with electric bikes, I dropped RC’s, but since we have such long winters in Michigan. I tend to do a lot of projects indoors, with my other hobby in CNC’s. I use RC’s as a reason to machine stuff. My latest project is taking a wildwing and putting in full thrust vectoring. I have as much fun making things as playing with them. I hear you about flying in one. When I ever get the time to do the wireless video with head tracking and on screen display. It will be virtual flying. I like the new development in that area. The onscreen stuff is really cool now, more like a jet fighter heads up display. It would be a riot to do an actual dog fight. Trying to build a small airsoft machine gun to fit it a plane.

Eventually, I will be in the air. I’m waiting for the paramotor companies to come out with an electric version. The gas stuff is just too noisy. There have been some individuals who have built them. I might have to do the same, just a lot of work and research. In the meantime I’ve picked up kiteboarding. It’s just as addictive as ebiking. I’ve been a long time windsurfer as well, so it was a natural progression.

Check out my youtube..

I have a video where i put a 6s battery on a 3s plane setup & totalled the plane withing 30 or so seconds; ...

plane was way to small and agile to handle the added weight .. along with it was way to wind to fly hahah

Um............I had to quit when I put a Graupner 3 meter powered sailplane straight in from about 500 feet. Astro geared 25 and Lipo. It missed the owner of our flying (polo field) site by about 50 feet. He just laughed but I dont't think he knew the mortal danger involved. After I dug the pieces out of the crater I stopped flying model aircraft. I never even saw it coming down! Trikes are safer, I think! Old eyes suck!

In the spring when tracks dry out and open, come down and I will leave you with black and blue sides, a vicious neck ache, a smile that can't be wiped off your face. A 250cc shifter kart is really that good. I put one half-under the outer fence at a track once, and even with chainlink wires sticking into my thighs in multiple places, I not only couldn't stop smiling and laughing, but I was all ready thinking about how I could make it faster as the track safety guys are trying to cut the fence away. lol

Shifter-karts = FTMFW

Just try to tell me you don't want to be doing 100mph sliding on your neck Arlo. I know you're the type who lives for this sh*t.

I want to pull a trailer behind my trike with a fully automatic paintball turret.
My wife can mow down junior high kids as I scream obscenities

I have all the stuff..... I dont know what is stopping me.

Maybe I could hire you two to shoot down political propoganda signs during the next elections here? I've always dreamed of paintballing those things, and I mean all of them...

you know i dont see young windsurfers. kiteboarding is killing it . for good reason to , main reason my jetskis have not had powerplants all last year im lovin the kboarding

my rig. i was going to get a 5th line on that nash this winter but i think its time for a new kite. that and i kinda want to try using that kite on the sand with a trike.
kiteboardingrig.jpg

for those who have never done it its hard to explain . there is a sense of continuous acceleration and you dont need waves to get big air , just pull down on the bar and hold on , something tells me you'd like it LFP

kfong you ever seen the video of the guy in maui caught in an updraft ? its on youtube . ill find it

ok this is a little ot BUT i did mention a trike

My threads are "OT OK"
I think the mind needs to wander from time to time to come up with fresh ideas. :D
There are other threads (like topic specific sticky threads) that should stay rigidly on topic... but not this one.

Back on topic: Spun axle no longer true

I have confirmed that the stator is not true to the axle. After tearing the motor down 5 times and trying small repairs there is nothing I can do other than to put the stator in a lathe and turn it down a few thousandths. The wheel is very hard to turn now.... When it overheats the epoxies, dust, and goop collect in this tiny gap and create great friction.

I dont have a lathe (or patience) so I am going to try to do it with a grinding wheel / chop saw / angle grinder
I am just going too mark every spot that shows wear, grind off the markings, repeat
Wish me luck :(
