Bar end shifter and twist throttle

It just dawned on me that my new trike has Bar-con (Shimano) bar end shfiters. These have the shift wire outside the bars held on with the hand grips. How the heck am I going to mount the full twist throttle? Help?!?!?!?!

You ain't if you want to keep the bar-cons.

My next ride might have bar-cons and mustache bars so I'll be looking at the same problem
Today I was eyeing the small trigger throttle on a kids scooter.
It's about the same size as a Sturmey Archer three-speed trigger shifter.
The other option that crossed my mind was to see if the cable housing could be routed through two holes in the handle bar. One hole being in the stationary part of a half-grip twist throttle. That would create an odd bulge in the normally comfortable enlarged grip bar-cons provide by default.

I am just about to receive my kit and am wondering the same thing. Although I have ordered a thumb shifter. Depending on how it looks when I get it I have been playing with the idea of using a spare bar end friction shifter with usual shifting cable going down to the thumb shifter on the frame at some point maybe drilling through the thumb shifter and attaching the cable somehow. No idea if this is even a possibility yet though. I would love a solution for bar end shifters....

You may do a lot less shifting once you are motorized. Mabye a set of old school shift levers on the frame or handlebar stem?

Too early to panic, otherDoc.

Since you are on a trike/tadpole, you presumably don't put the stress on your bars that a DF rider does. So, you could theoretically run the shift cables inside the bar (drill very near the barcon, and then as soon as possible after the twist grip) and use a half-grip twister. This will weaken the bar at the inner hole, but you could even drill out through a brake lever clamp, maybe, where the clamp will reinforce the bar tube. You would need to locate the inner hole carefully to minimize the possibility of a stress fracture.

Just some off-the-wall thoughts, but I've seen cables successfully run inside bars before for trikes.

Thanks, guys! I thought about the drilling hole thing, but I really hate to do that on a brand new (My first ever, really) trike. If I can find my old SRAM paddle shifters, I may try that first. The trigger throttle may be possible, but my old paws are used to the twist throttle. Thanks for scrambling up the old brains. I do love them Bar-cons, though!

I use bar end shifters but I use a pedelec sensor on my crank and a knob to set assist level. Part of the reason for using bar end shifters is to free up space on the bars to move my hands around to different positions. Having to keep my hands on the throttle would defeat the purpose.

One solution is to use "Pauls thumbies". These are mounts that go on the bars that allow you to put your bar end shifter on the bar like the old deore thumb shifters.

Hi Steve,

The "knob" for pedelec assistance what kit would that be with? I am just setting up a clyte and would love to have that ability to get away from a throttle. Or have you just wired up some sort of a knob to your throttle control and set it at the level and use the pedelec sensor to just stop the motor when required?

Thanks,

Ray

The knob is from an ezee kit, it plugs in to the cycleanalyst. You can get it from http://www.ebikes.ca or possibly another ezee seller like cycle9.

I'll look around as I have seen something like them!
