Doc in California !!

Thanks you Nic and E-beach.

My wife and me are discussing about our "planning" and what we will do is very similar as what you suggest Nic.

Doc

I am searching for a car rental service whwre i can rent a hybrid or electric car at great price in Sans Francisco now..

Doc

If you go through Las Vegas, just don't make to big of a "donation" to the casino.

:D

The Stig said:
But do make a small donation, like 1$ in the slot machine, order a Beer or a Johnny black, tip the waitress 1$, and you've got your self a good deal!

they are gonna have another RV at my car auction on tuesday.

i could pick up an RV for $400-500 for you to use and you can drive it home.

you don't really wanna go to california either when you got the entire rockies to travel through. i recommend the Dolores river in SW colorado. or canyonlands, Bryce canyon capital reef, lotsa good places to go where the crowds are not.

CA started to seriously suck for RVs about 15-20 years ago and has only gotten worse with every passing year.
Rent a car and stay in motels is my suggestion.

Until recently I did all travel in my RV (because it's also what I live in all year)
forget the rv
SF to LA is one of the most RV unfriendly areas of the USA where RV travel is expensive... on the order of $300-$500 per day, not including the cost of the RV rental.
And, as someone mentioned, finding anyplace to empty the black tank can take ... time. Time better spent doing something else.
This holds true as far north as Santa Rosa, CA
On the other hand, I've pulled off CA 1 in scenic parking areas when the fog rolls in thick without issues, because fog...
Most areas allow parking overnight (24 hours) in residential areas. It's easier if you know someone who lives in the neighborhood but you're like, gone man, before anyone questions your presence.
Park anyplace else and you will be accosted by police or security. Even while 'just' shopping at most stores.
First hand experience.

If it wasn't for relatives I would never travel in CA again.
I likely won't anyways and insist that my relatives visit me now.
They don't.
lol.

Guys.. I will rent a car and use Hotel!

I should arrive SF on friday  I will be between S-F and L-A between 9 to 23 and will also visit Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

It will be great to meet some of you guys!

Doc

We are now arrived to S-F today and the trip was perfect.
Great Hotel, Great trip in the plane, people here are very welcoming :D

I hope to stop by and visit Zero at Scott Valley and maybe TESLA if possible  ... but i have only... a Volt and a Zero.... no rich enough for a TESLA.. This shold be on Monday.

Then we will continu along the Highway 1.

One of my jobmate convinced me to install "Magic Jack" wich is a great apps for android and offer very similar features like Skype that allow you for free to make long distance call and receive them for free.

Doc

Enjoy your trip Doc! I think you made a good call - rental car & hotels this time. Bay area is so cool, much diversity but the good people make it work in a beautiful way.

If you're a fan of Western movies you might wanna stay in Kanab, UT and visit the north rim of Grand Canyon. Tons of movies shot in that vicinity and it's a good approach to Grand Canyon from the north.

Whatever you do ENJOY yourselves and have a safe drive!

Today we have quit San Francisco in direction of our next stop wich is Montery, before continuing on highway 1 to L-A.

I stoped to the TESLA Deasquarter just to stop by and get a T-shirt and a TESLA cup for my work. There was alot of these grat Model S all aligned precisely in teh parking and connected for charging.. it was impressive!.

Then i have stop to Zero Motorcycle in Scott Valley . It was a bit late in the day and i knew it would have been difficult to meet the guys i know there and have a visit... Luke will be coming back on 16 may only so i might return and do the 500km back to Zero to see him and have a visit at Zero factory. However i have meet Micheal and Kelly and enjoyed discussing few minutes with them.. Micheal knew me already with th YT video and forums so he reconized me. I might return and do the 1000km.. Luke are you in ?? 8)

Hey guys.. THAT IS SO IMPRSSIVE on HOW MUCH TESLA ARE ON THE CALIFORNIA ROADS !!!!    ... it'S like at every 100 cars i see there is a TESLA !!

btw on sunday night we stop at the Mythbusters Studio just to see where they make the show... i was only able to take a picture in the front of their big garage door... lol... anyway that's a great Souvenir! I also found a packing of a GoPro camera on the side of their container.. i kept it for a souvenir... lol

California is just AMAZING !! People are so welcoming !! When pedestrian are waiting at an intersection, car drivers stop to let them cross teh road.. WOW... I wish we would ALL have the same polite attitude in Quebec!

100% sunny days... no rain and no cold... Rrrr that will be difficult to comeback to Quebec!!

Doc

Hey Doc glad your trip went well.

Was gonna say you're welcome to park in front our house in San Mateo but you've left the area :)

I've taken an RV from here up to Washington and back and didn't have too much trouble. Parked at Walmarts and in residential areas. Just be polite and stay out of the way and no one bothered us.

But it was very expensive with a 25ft RV... got 7-12mpg and the RV itself was expensive. We didn't use the toilet but had to stop at an actual RV campground to dump the grey water ($35). The small car and hotels is a nicer way to go if you don't have some other constraints.

Doc, if you want to visit, tomorrow works for me. :)

I stumbled on this thread late.

Doc, my family lives in San Diego, and my dad has an acre (and plenty of room in the house or on the driveway) in North County San Diego. I wish I would have stumbled on this thread sooner.

I always send people to my dad's house. Each time he's like, "uh....who?.....uh....I guess....." and then he has a great time. He loves having guests (as long as they don't mind long stories and alcohol).

I've met a lot of people online and traveled with them, stayed with them, had them stay with me, set them up with friends and family, and so far nobody has gotten their throat slit. I've had them stay in my house while my two little kids slept down the hall. And all went well. That's because the vast majority of humans are not evil, sick creeps. Only a few are that way, and they are usually easy to filter out (I'm smart that way).

I tend to see the best in people (in terms of actions. I see the worst in people when they start flapping their gums about this and that).

I've met some lifelong friends online. If they shoot me? So what. When I'm dead they won't be able to kill me again. Ha. I gave up my fear of death a long time ago, and my life has been better since. You can only kill me once, and whatever comes next can't be any worse than this.

So with that in mind, I like to make as many friends as I possibly can. They don't all stick, but most of them do, and they make my life better. Old, young, dumb or smart. Doesn't matter. I like people and I like to serve others. That's just my nature.

If, by chance, you are still in California. Send me a message. I'll get you a place to park overnight (at the least), and if you need a hot shower and a real bed, I can do that too.

I have friends and family in the bottom half of California. South of San Francisco Bay. Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, LA, San Diego (heck even Mexico if you are braver than I am).

Update May 23.

Hi guys. I'm back from Scott Valley where i spent 2 days at Luke's home ( Liveforphysics) and these was amazing days! I will probably get a less exciting visit with mission motos ;) within the next month, fingers crossed they let me test ride one of their bikes.

I can't believe I missed this thread and Doc. If you drove the 101, you passed 5 mins from me in Ventura. Bummer as I would have loved to have you stop by.
