I'm totally new to this and am currently still getting together parts to build my first electric longboard. Parts are limited here in South Korea, but I've managed to get my hands on some unbranded 5065 motors. I'd prefer a dual rear setup to a diagonal setup for ease of wiring, but my trucks aren't wide enough to fit both motors and the 15mm belts I've bought. Has anyone thought about or tried mounting motors to either side of the rear truck i.e. one in front of the truck and one behind on the opposite side? Kind of like a diagonal setup but with both motors mounted on the rear truck. Does that make any sense? Would it work or is there something I'm not thinking of?

To answer the question, I see no reason, apart from aesthetics, that you cannot mount your motors like that.

I say go for it!

People mount dual rear off the back of their hanger just as easily as people mounting dual rear on the inside of the hanger- no reason why you can't mix the styles.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Torqueboards: I would have preferred 6355's or something similar, just I had a really hard time finding them here. One of the most reputable RC stores in the country insisted there was no such thing as an outrunner at less than 300KV; he told me they only started at 1,000KV! With import taxes being the pain they are here too, I was cautious of importing. I once had a role of kapton tape held up in customs for 11 months.

WeeChumlee: I'm guessing it is the aesthetics that has put people off of this configuration. Then again I'm not a huge fan of the aesthetics of the diagonal setup either and I kind of like the front trucks free to make it easier to hang in my box of an apartment.

Cmatson: Thanks for the encouragement. This is what I was thinking. Still waiting on parts, but I'll post pictures if I do eventually go for this setup.

Hi Remcka
Just as an adder. I have a dual 5065 build. Managed to get them on the back truck but only because it is a Paris 195.
I also have a single 63mm motor build. To tell the truth if, and when, I build another board it will be a single 63mm. The 63mm motors have enough power to pull me up all the hills in my area without any problems. (I an close to 90kg). Single 63mm makes everything easier, cheaper and - in my opinion -just as good.
So unless you intend to do crazy hills it may be better to just try a 63mm. I know you mentioned you already had the 5065 motors but if you have not already got the ESCs already I thought maybe it might be an option.

Hi WeeChumlee,

Thanks for the advice. In heinsight, I wish I had gone for a 63 single build, but yes, I do already have the 2 ESC's. I'm surprised the single motor can power you up a hill. That's the main reason I wanted to go for 2 motors. What battery setup do you use to do that?

Hi Remcka
I use an 8S 8000mah battery and a 6374 motor.
Previously I had a Flier ESC which provided quick acceleration (more than I could handle) but unfortunately the braking was crap - all or nothing.
Upgraded to VESC (as I have them in my dual as was so impressed) but am having heating problems with the VESC going up hills. The motor though does not get hot.
With the Flier ESC I went up all the hills in my area with power to spare. I was honestly amazed at what a difference there was compared to the 50mm motor I had on there before.
For me a single 6374 motor and 15mm belt is perfect. I think I shal try a 6355 motor at some time to see how they fare. Probably also good enough for a single.
I shall sort out the heat problems on the VESC by bigger heat sinks or going 12S battery.

All the best for your build.

That does sound like a good amount of power. I'd also like to run an 8S or 12S battery, but once again I couldn't find an ESC capable of it here. I might at some point consider going through the hassle of importing parts and running the VESC.

I'm planning on running dual 6S 8,000mah. I saw a post about this possibility a couple of years back (that's how long I've been wanting a board for. I really wanted a boosted board but couldn't justify the 2,700USD it was going to take to get one here). Looking back, I just realised it was written by torqueboards.

Dual 6S on 5055-280kv should reach 30-40mph? Max 60 amps each.
2x - Hobby King 150A High performance Brushless Car ESC $68.99 6S 55x60x40 150g 2x escs = 0.66 lbs 2x = $137.98
2x - Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 5055-280kv Brushless Outrunner Motor $49.23 6-10S 1510watts - 60 amps 59mm length 369g 2x motors - 1.62 lbs 2x motors = $98.46
2x - Turnigy 5000mAh 6S 25C Long Lipo Pack $52.99 6S 299x55x26 820g 12" long 2x = 3.6lbs 2x = $105.98
TOTAL COST = $342.42
TOTAL WEIGHT = 5.88 lbs

Had to change out parts for the best alternatives I could find unfortunately. I was aiming for exactly this originally. I actually found the Hobby King 150As but they're $150 each here!

Thanks for all the info and advice!
