Hi ES,

First of all, great infos here, and great people answering every questions I had, so thanks a lot ! Since I'm a newb in electric in general (never put my hands in wires before but my bike mecanic skills are quite good, so that's a starter). This set up is pretty basic (french here so excuse the possible errors):

(all from greenbikekit)
Battery: 36v 10 Ah (Frog type) Li-ion 3C
Controller: CON 61 36v 14 Amp
Hub: Front Q100 24 v201 rpm (so around 300rpm at 36v) 250-350w (or f100 on GBK) (i built the wheel, since the shipping was about 100$ + with the chinese rim, and i wanted a better rim...and better built)
Throttle: A full twist throttle (they didn't have the half: ended up cutting the extra length to make it half twist (liked it better like this)
Throttle 2: I bought a extra throttle to have a ON-OFF swith and a push boost button, for now the on-off work but i didn't connect the boost yet

total cost:
original price on the web site: 310$
+ shipping (155$)
Converting in CAN $ + Paypal fees (15$): 515$
+custom: 30$
Total: 545$ + rim + spokes + time + time + time = lots of fun and learning

Needs:
I bike everyday and wanted a ebike to go a little further, a little faster and keeping in mind that this built will aim at a low cost and a low weight. When reading about Chas58 (many thanks by the way Chas !) bike on this tread (http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=49691), i decided that it would be a good way to go. I decided to go front hub because i also bought the FlyKly which is a rear wheel, i tough maybe it could be a nice combo. But actually i wanted to test both system...maybe i'll end up selling the flykly and put a different motor in the rear...will see later, Flykly wheel should be here in a few months (originally limit to 32kmh, but now at 25 kmh, is not that much...i'm a bike racer and 25kmh is not a big deal...anyway, i'll see how that goes.

So: light, stealth, secure (no lipo for me now), speed (with me pushing) between 35-45 kmh, i don't mind climbing hills (this is apparently not a torquey motor, anyway in this set up), and i don't mind pedaling the first few meters and then start the throttle while pedaling. This set up is basically an extra pair of leg giving Watt in flats area.

O yeah, I decided to trash the little rack that came with the frog battery. First it seems that the rack will fail eventually. And i didn't want the extra weight and the weird looking on my bike...So controller is under the front rack and, i think, well protected from water and stuff.

Didn't really had the chance yet to test the bike because of the rain and work (and the battery is not really well strap for now), but did a few km and came back with a smile each time, this is really fun. Will come back with a bit more info on range and speed eventually.

Plans are:
1-secure battery in front basket and see the feel.
2-set up the battery in a backpack, 3kg is really not that much for small rides i think.
3-if that work out well, routing of the power cable inside the frame

I definitely will have some question for you guys, thanks again for the help. Learning every day. If you have comments or pointers that would help me i would definitely take them !

And since this is a newb ebike, i tough that maybe another newb would find all of these picture interesting, so here's the progress, step by step so a lot of pictures, it would have help me in some of my decision before ordering, so hope it helps someone out there !

Many thanks, great forum ! More to come (weight-speed-range)

(i did cut the fender to clear well the controller's case)

Genial! Looks like you are off to a good start.

I think you might have figured this out, but that 201rmp motor isn’t going to help you out much above 25kph, and will do nothing above 30kph.

To be specific:

On a road bike, I ride about 33km/hr. The Q100 does about 24kph by itself, and with “no load” does about 29kph That means between 24 kph and 29 kph the power output is ramping down from its peak to zero power. Above 29kph, its just dead weight you are luigging around. 29kph is about how fast I might ride on a mountain bike with no motor. So, riding around with a motor, it’s really not adding any value other than on acceleration or maybe on a hill or turn. Above 29k/h, it is supplying no power.

To simulate this, go here:
http://www.ebikes.ca/tools/simulator.html
and do a graph of the Q100 with a 16” wheel and 15amps. You’ll see the power drop off after 23kph and the power goes to zero over 29kph.

That is why I use the 24v201 rpm at 36v (giving me 300rpm), and why people here have started buying the new 260rmp version (from elife or BMS).

Yes indeed, still a pretty good commuter, aint looking for a beast...for now. But i will still put a 52-11 on this bike to reach the max of what my leg can put out (2 rings, 8 cogs)

Sooo this other part i'm trying to do didn't turn out too well. I want to put a connectors for my power wires. So i went to a big shop in montreal and this is what i ended up putting (they didn't have anderson powerpoles)

But in the end, i don't really like the feel of the connectors, and will probably cut them and see what i can put there... any suggestion ? Anderson Powerpoles seems to be popular here, but are they a bit waterproof (considering that i will connect-disconnect this one a lot, i don't want to put a tape or something else on them...)

Help still needed please:

So this will be the set up

battery in backpack ---> spiral wire coming out of it ----> connection to handle bar (see picture)

IMAG04861.jpg

I'm still wondering what type of connector would be good for the connection on the handlebars, it will be expose to rain and i want to connect-disconnect easily. XLR ? aderson powerpoles ? others ? Any suggestion at all on this kind of set up ?

And maybe a place from where to order them would be nice. Thanks !

Chris

Well this was quite helpfull ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJTMKSuVI3U

So i got a better 12g wire in the last days (the other one was splitting just by giving it a little twirl...didn't feel safe; ordered some anderson powerpoles on ebay (30A), and will deal with the waterproof issue another time, for now, let's focus on getting this thing riding in "normal" conditions
