Is There a Way to Stress Test Batteries?

It seems determining the state of batteries is some kind of default exercise. Car mechanics have a way of testing batteries - we need the same for ebikes instead of guessing - imho.

With a few simple items and meters it’s actually quite simple to qualify battery packs and cells.

Here’s a thread I started a while back.

Some nuggets of info in there. The CA is total overkill but that is merely one way of doing some battery tests.

The main things to look for when qualifying battery packs:

1) IR or internal resistance. The batteries ability to supply Current/Amps to your load. There’s a total pack IR while each cell has it’s own IR. The later may be harder to test without some creative probing and sorting sense wires but sometimes it’s worth it.

2) Capacity. Does that 5Ah RC Lipo pack really deliver 5Ah between min/max voltage extremes? Gotta apply a load and measure the time and voltage parameters to find out. Not as hard as it sounds.

3) Leakage. I dunno the best term to use but this test is to see if the battery pack/cells continuously lose voltage SOC (state of charge) while merely sitting unattached to anything over the course of a few days time.

By assembling a “test kit” of meters, chargers, battery pack, load device and performing some simple tests, you can tell a lot about a battery pack before it’s ever put into service.
