Progress!

Despite the shit going on of late, I have had a win with the bike at least. I ordered a Brembo 900ss rear wheel off ebay and it arrived in pretty good condition. Since I have upgraded the axle to 20 mm, I needed to replace the 17x40x12 bearings with 20x42x12s. This meant getting the hubs machined out to 42 mm; got it done for $100 locally. I also had to make a new bearing spacer to suit the 20 mm shaft, and make a new cush drive sleeve. Thanks to Entecho I could use their lathe and milling machine to get it all done in my own time.

I decided to lever the Pilot Pure tyre I had onto the rim and fill it with air. Tubeless tyres are hard to inflate with a bicycle pump  I pumped and pumped and huffed and puffed, but finally got it on after nearly passing out from exhaustion.

Once I have a front wheel I can begin to get the fairings to fit.

So, if it looks big, the trick is to hop on and see how it looks. And it's not too big or unwieldy. I think it will shape up quite nicely.

sad to hear your e-bikes got pinched CHRiS :-(

race bike looks the tits though! puts the size in lil more perspective when you sit on it
nowhere near as big as it seems in previous pics... having used a professional race
bike frame builder to fabricate frame CHRiS.... I`m pretty sure it will handle like it's on rails mate ...
and that motor... my gaaaawd hanging to see that bastard scream!!!

What is your wheelbase looking like? I had to work my ass off to get Mk.5 to a 54" wheelbase, I am wondering what yours ended up like.

About 1420 mm, which is about 56 inches. No longer than a 2007 GSXR1000.

Would you entertain the idea of receiving a (modest) financial contribution towards this project?
I really want to see it happen. I'm not going to be putting together something fantastic like this myself as much as I would like to.
So the next best thing I can do is live vicariously through your work.
Plus you have done so much for the community documenting your progress and findings, and providing a ripping yarn along the way.

So if theres some way of sending some dollah, then you just hollah.

:D

^^^ .. +1
Jonescg .. why dont you set up a PayPay account so that those of us who think you have earned our support can help you get this on the track ?
Im not offering a sponsorship , but if a few folk wanted to just throw in a few $$'s each , you may at least be able to afford some shoes !

Aw shucks...

I have been reluctant to do this, as it is ultimately my toy for my benefit. But it is reassuring to know others have gained knowledge from it too. How about this? People can buy parts for me -

I need a complete front wheel (K7 GSXR, 600, 750 or 1000) with rotors
I need a complete front brake system - callipers, braided lines, lever and master cylinder
I need a rear brake master cylinder from a mid 2000s CBR600
I need a rear Brembo brake calliper from a 1998 Ducati 900ss, and braided line.

I hope to get the inverter on lease-to-buy, but the battery will be a $7000 expense, and at least $1600 for the BMS.

If people sent me cash I would probably end up spending it on dumb shit like rent or electricity bills

Could you provide links to some suitable sources in Australia for these? Is there anywhere local that has some of the items you need to avoid shipping costs? That said, I'm probably more at the braided line level of contribution than the complete front wheel end of things! How do we avoid duplicate purchases? PM you before buying something and wait for your reply to see if someone is already buying it? I don't know who out there is flush enough to come up with a whole front wheel, seems a shame there isn't some way cash could be contributed towards the larger items that would be transparent to all, to reduce the temptation to spend it rent, yachts, casinos ... ?? :D

ebay has been a reliable source for most of this stuff. You can always change the shipping address - that's how I did it for the forks, triples and swingarm. I just got them delivered to the Framecrafters workshop.

Braided lines can come from HEL - http://www.helperformance.com.au/hel-brake-lines-for-suzuki-gsxr1000-k7-2007-2007-1434.html The callipers might be one for the wreckers, but if they do pop up as an OEM part I'll take them. Not cheap though :(

Callipers: http://www.ebay.com/itm/05-06-07-08-Suzuki-GSXR1000-GSXR-1000-Front-Brake-Calipers-S1-/310789616638

I also need a '98 Ducati 900ss rear brake disc - that should be reasonably affordable :)

That's my list for Santa so far...

If ya need any machined /cnc plasma cut bits, and can wait for shipping let me know.

:?: I didnt see any shoes on that list Jonescg ?
i could run to a pair of Croc's ? ..what color do ya want ?
Seriously man, let us have a Ppal acc'nt to chip into, so you dont get sent a heap of typical... "well meaning ..but not quite right " ... xmas presents !
I couldnt afford a $500 wheel, but maybe 100 of us can stump up $5 each so you can get exactly what you need.
Quick man...before i spend it on a freekin dead xmas tree ...again !

Merry Xmas ( am i the first ? )

 Shoes... I have a pair of Rossi boots I practically live in. You know how it is when you discover a boot you love? You just order a size 8 over the web and you know it will fit. Made in Radelaide too! Heaps good!

Well OK, I have a paypal account you can chip into. If you send funds to christophergrahamjones@gmail.com I will publicly thank you here!

Thanks guys!

Chris

Wow! Thanks Rodney!!

Yes you and your Mrs can get a ride on it once it's going! Just make sure you got private health insurance - this thing could be a widow-maker. I'll put that straight towards a rear brake calliper!

Cheers man! :D

Thanks also to Richard S - much appreciated! I should be able to get a wheel at this rate!

OK update on expenditure :)

I have ordered:

1 x CBR600 rear brake master cylinder from e-bay for $18. Sounds cheap, probably cause it is, but I never use the rear brake so I'm not too fussed if it only works once.

1 x Ducati 900ss rear brake disc from a supplier in Melbourne for $89 delivered.

1 x Ducati 900ss rear brake braided line from Bulgaria for $50 delivered.

1 x K7 GSXR1000 front brake braided lines from HEL in Brisbane $130 delivered.

1 x set of K7 GSXR1000 front brake calipers from the USA for $100 delivered.

1 x K7 GSXR1000 front brake master cylinder from the USA for $75 delivered.

Still shopping around for a rear brake caliper which hopefully I don't have to clean up and re-seal.

Thanks guys!

Chris

Edited to include latest shopping :)

what is the metal you suggest for connecting cells in series if i use 40 Ah Lipo pouch cell with 40s1p configuration.??

Small sections of copper, maybe 12 mm long, 14 mm wide and 2 mm thick. Nothing special.

Many thanks to Mark Martins for some cash! It can go towards my rear brake calliper :D

I've been busy on Ebay lately

I found a rear brake calliper for a Ducati 900ss, paid $90 including delivery. It's covered in black paint, but I might try to tidy up all of the callipers and paint them in something a bit nicer...

Fortunately my cheque for $1000 came through on the bicycle insurance claim and I've had a couple of days work at Entecho with some more test flights. So I have ordered a front wheel  Still need to get a couple of discs for it, but hopefully soon I can get it rolling and finally fix the fairing brackets to the bike.

I couldn't wait for the new front wheel to arrive, so I rolled the bike out and started to fit the lower fairing. I still had to split it up the middle, so KiM, if you want to do some glassing for me you are most welcome. I probably wouldn't need to have a completely sealed belly pan, especially since the coolant needs to be pure water on the race track (but 50/50 glycol on the road). At the Entecho Christmas party I had a good chat with Glen from Composite Components. He has offered to lay up a tank cover for me, but I have to make the scaffold and mold for him. I can do that, but I'm definitely not doing any fibreglassing. I f*#king hate that job.

It's looking very bike-like now :) Time to start considering colour schemes... Kangaroo paw tricolour 8)

Voltron Evo simple.jpg

The rear brake disc is on, the front brake braided lines have arrived, and the callipers/master cylinders are on their way. I do need to find a radiator which fits without fouling the front wheel.

One of the interesting things is the huge volume of unutilised space under the battery pack. If I was to make this a road-going bike, I could reasonably fit a battery charger down there.

Looking good mate.
Are the brake lines dual all the way from the master cylinder ?
If theres a single line from MS to lower triple clamp it will cause a restriction and slow down reaction time (not joking)

Dont know about you paint scheme though, do something more mainstream racy

Danny, yes the front brake lines are a pair going from the MC to the callipers; not compromising there. Not buying cheapo rotors either.

Abraham, that link is a beautiful specimen. Sure, my MS paint mockup looks like rubbish, but if I hand it to a designer who can stylise the flower into a neat design for the bikes livery, that would be awesome. Otherwise, I'll try to get Bankwest to sponsor me and have it painted orange...

I just finished putting the ledges together for securing the battery pack. This thing ain't going anywhere :D

My front brake parts arrived today!

Still waiting on the rear calliper and it's braided line as well as the CBR rear master cylinder. I'm also yet to pick up the front rotors, but they're another $300. That can wait till I've had a bit more work after Christmas.

Oh, to anyone reading this who loves electric race bikes, get over to Indiegogo and support the Buckeye team's efforts to get back to the Isle of Man! http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/buckeye-current-returns-to-the-isle-of-man I can't afford to build my bike, these guys have a bike they can't afford to race. Go Kyle et al. :D
