LightningRods mid drive kit

I think the q76 with clear out nicely with a small block and make it a light setup to climb the mountain and bomb the dh...what dropout size did you order for your q76?

I do not see why not. Pair of 19x1.6 with Shinko 241 19-3.00 or a pair of 19x1.85 with a Shinko 241 19-3.5.

It will be HEAVY though as compared to fat bike rim and tire. Personally I don't mind though and prefer the Moto Setup. Keep in mind you will probably loose some of the squishy suspension like properties with fat bike tires. You can run low pressure with the Shinkos but it still won't be as soft since the Moto tires are a lot stiffer.
 
The Qulbix frames don't really need a lot of special parts to run my mid drives. The standard 83mm Big Block comes close to working in stock form. The R140 just needed a chain primary to clear it's huge battery box.

The rear dropout widths are odd on the Qulbix frames. I can only guess that's because they've been set up for hub motors until now. Usually the wide hubs give you more options in terms of clearing wide tires with the drive chain. A narrow hub sets the sprocket(s) in tight and can cause the chain to rub the rear tire.

Good question. Mike sent me to Timberline for the rear hub). I am waiting to find out how wide their rear hubs are (or can be). I haven't heard back but as soon as I do, I'll call norm my dropout width with Qulbix. 165mm dropouts would be ideal so I could still fit a QS 205 if I had a need later on but I need to find out what my hub options are first. Qulbix will also do a 150 or a 155 by special request. 150 appears to be their new standard.
 
In my experience a 135mm was normal mountain bike width and most fat bikes were 170mm. Now there are even 190mm fat bike hubs. I'll be interested to hear what Timberline says.

They are calling me a, "Luna-Tic" at work now!!!!! .......... (I am a psych nurse at the reno VA , so it fits well ---)
I knew I shouldn't have told them what i was up too.. :wink:
 
Guys, I mentioned this to pkirkll in PM but I should remind every here with a Luna Frame before they go buy 19x2.10 rims with 4 inch tires :lol: . Remember that the Luna is designed with 135mm dropouts so you still have to be able to get the chainline around the front of the tire.

Can anyone tell me if this motor has a voltage it is most efficient at or a voltage that shouldn't be exceeded?

I am playing with ideas of 100v but for one thing think my ball bearings in hub body might melt at too high a RPM...
 
I'd go to ceramic bearings for 100V, especially for the big block which has twice the rotating mass of the small block. The small block has been run at 100V 40A without problems, at least in the short term. 72V 40A is common now for the small block. The big block hasn't been run at as high a voltage, mostly because most users have been happy with 50V 65A.

I plan to run the big block up to 100V 100A myself and see how it does. I'll definitely need a motorcycle driveline for that level of power.
 
All of the major mechanical parts are done for all of the Luna orders that I have in. Laser cut metal, jackshaft housings and axles, 219 sprockets and chain, primary pulleys and belts and all of the adjusters and fiddly bits. I currently have 4 big blocks ready to install and four sets of everything painted and detailed. The rest of the motors have shipped air freight and will begin arriving by twos later this week.

I need to order the final drive freewheel sprocket and final drive cogs. These are easy to get off the shelf parts. I also need to cast the master pattern part for the urethane split block that is the upper hanger on the Luna drive. No hose clamps for this mid drive!

I am going to make safety guards for both the primary and secondary sides of these drives. I'm also going to incorporate a mount for a torque sensor on the chain from the chainwheel to the lower jackshaft. It's up to the first four whether they want to wait a week or so for the guards or have their mid drives shipped ASAP. Here are the first four:

The great news is that I am completely caught up on my regular mid drive production. I'm going to get all of these Luna drives done as fast as humanly possible. If you're in the first group of four let me know whether you want to wait for the primary and secondary guards or get your drive as soon as the main assembly is finished. The guards can ship later when they're finished.

As excited as I am to see and run my drive I have a request to make of you, on your list I'm 4 and Karl G is 5, I'd be happy to trade places with him even if it takes another 2 or 3 weeks for mine to ship. That way the guards are done and we get to see Karls review that much sooner, it will probably really help with my build and I have a heavy work schedule the next month or so too. I'd hate to see my motor sitting when Karl could get some K's on it.

A 76R frame is on it's way to me right now to have a mid drive fitted to it. I don't expect the 76R frame to be very different from the Raptor 140 frame which was an easy fit.

You will offer complete kit or just mounting bracket? Selling price will be?
If only mounting bracket, which motor(s) kit do I have to buy e.g. Cyclone?

I'll offer complete kits for both the 76R and Raptor 140. I think that the 140 kits will be big block only because of the weight of the bike and the width of the battery box. The big block motor is just wide enough to allow the drives to clear the battery box on both sides.

Because the 76R is designed to be lightweight I'm going to try to offer both big block and small block kits. We'll have to see how the small block fits the 76R frame.

I hadn't thought about offering a Cyclone motor version of my Qulbix kit. I guess if people want it...

Prices will be the same as my regular bottom bracket mid drives.
