Hi,

I am building a bike which can do around 70kmph (~44mph). Used a BLDC hub motor with a max power output of 1.8kW which took me to something like 55kmph (~35mph): not good enough :|

Also, the hub motors were a pretty boring thing. So I am planning to shift to a non-hub motor now and run it using a chain/belt transmission.

Been scouting on the forum and it appears that the MAC motors have a good reputation. Could not find them anywhere on net though.. where do I buy them?

Thanks!

Mac motors are geared hub motors.

I don't get it.. with such a hard to find motor, is it worth the effort? Where would I find the support later on (if required)?

Are these motors really that reliable or am I better off looking for a different 2-3kW motor?

I can't answer how reliable as I have no experience with them except for the bldc kollmorgen motor. There is also goldenmotors bldc motors and also RC motors. You will get better answers if you post in the non-hub motors drive section of this forum.
Kollmorgen bldc motors are made in INDIA.
Cheers!

CELL-MAN...best source on the net.. he is a member..look him up
He's asking about direct drive aka scooter type motors. There are a brand of mac motors that are not geared hub motors.

any other recommendations for a non-hub motor? I am looking at 2 to 3kW of output.

I was thinking of Golden Motors (a Chinese company) which has this 5 kW motor (HPM-500B) http://www.goldenmotor.com/

A 3kW motor from astroflights (http://www.astroflight.com/motors/brushless-motors/3215.html)
The problem with the astroflights motor is that it is pretty fast so I will have to add a gearbox to reduce it down to a manageable rpm on the wheels. Any ideas?

BTW: I simply could not locate a 3kW MAC motor on net.

Mac and BMC geared motor are only good up to 1.5KW. Anymore and you start to burn wires.

Go with direct drive motor if you want 3KW continuous.

I recommend cromotor.

@mvly: did you mean hubzilla? that beast is waaay too powerful at 6kW (with peaks of 12kW!!!).

+ it's a hub motor. i wanted to try out a non hub this time..

or hold on.. did you mean some other motor? dang.. how do i check what motors cromotor sells? i keep going back to hubzilla every single time i search cromotor..

sorry, i should have paid more attention... if you are looking for a powerfull motor, try john in cr[amember].. he was advertising some initems for sale,new.. they are nor mac,but john runs some pretty potent machines

lightcycle has a build with the goldenmotor blh-800 motor and there are a few posts about the bigger golden motors and tons of turnigy builds.
The goldenmotors bldc are already sensored so if you are an electrical klutz like me they have an advantage....

I would like to see someone build and post a thread with the goldenmotors bldc motors using the GNG mid drive kit...I think that would rock!
