It still astounds me, the Beatles were able to accomplish so much, mostly using 4 track analog recording. Its even more amazing, when you consider they were a band that did not just stick to only guitar/drums/bass/vocals. They constantly used orchestral instruments , unique instruments like the sitar along with doing a lot of 3-4 part complex vocal harmonies. they originated using ideas like tape loops, backwards recordings, ADT ,etc...in the studio.
For anyone who loves music, but does not think the Beatles were great, Id advise them to put on a pair of good headphones, and then listen to songs like ;
ELEANOR RIGBY
PENNY LANE
STRAWBERRY FIELDS
I AM THE WALRUS
I used to rent a house to a black person who was a great jazz guitarist and was very educated in music theory. He would come over to my studio and see my photos of the Beatles on the wall. I asked him if he liked the Beatles, and he said " NO" . I then asked him if he would be open minded enough, to sit down with me, for 20 minutes, and listen to the above 4 songs I mentioned from the Beatles catalogue. He agreed to do it. From that point on, after he really listened to those 4 songs, he became a Beatles fanatic...so much so, that he DEMANDED to borrow all my beatles albums, so he could learn them on guitar.
He told me, he never really listened to the complexities of Beatles songs, when he would hear them on the radio. In fact, he said hen ever he thought of Beatles music, all that would enter his mind, were songs like LOVE ME DO or YELLOW SUBMARINE. He never realized that the Beatles had over 200 original songs , many of which were musically complex and groundbreaking .
