dont think new motor works now touched the wires from the motor to one of the 12 volt batteries. nothing!!!! dead motor. that little round black washer thing that fell out and got bent to shit must have completed the circut to supply power to the motor. needs to be replaced!! I am done. will install the 80 tooth sprocket and i have the #25 chain and master link. all the parts are there to make it work. Drkangel I wil lpay you to fix it on the first of the month please! it will probley take you less than an hour as you know your stuff.I will figure out how to get it too you somehow. please help me out here.

thanks latecurtis.

Does your other burnt out motor have a washer thing you can use.

That washer thing wouldn't have been a circlip, would it?

Better to take to an electrician.
I am not an electric motor specialist.

circlip ? maby I checked out your link and it does not look like it as it has no open end but closed like a washer but I suspect it may be a circlip as there is a little movement in the shaft the motor sprocket is attached to now.

It makes no sense now to get a bolt in motor. spent a lot of money. 100 bucks for the new motor, sprocket, chain and master link. the motor is even installed so little extra hardware should be needed. a little black ring or circlip needs to be put back into the motor as when I installed the motor it came apart and I had a really hard time getting it back togeather. The ring fell out and was all bent up and I did not know where it went. Also the brushes I believe were on springs with copper wire going to the 4 of them. They needed to slide back to put the center piece in so the motor would go back in but I could not do it so I slid them all the way back until they locked out to get it back togeather.

now I realize I disabled the motor. the brushes maby got a little scraped up but nothing is broke and someone with more skill and experience than me can replace the ring and know how to put the center piece in so the brushes make contact with the center piece. Thats why the motor is dead there is not a complete circuit. Douge said it needed more voltage but I did not think so. something would happen with wires toching battery terminals.

All the old hardware can be reused so the only extra cost or work is in the modification of the piece the sprocket side of the motor attaches to. The ventaliation problem on the fan side of the motor could be solved with a couple extra nuts and washers to leave space between the brackets and the air holes. Cant do it on the sprocket side though below the sprocket as it would cause the bracket to be in the way of the chain. Above the sprocket should be doable though.

Doug is going to help me with the new sprocket on the wheel but has to get a 4 way puller tool or something as it is not some cassette thing he says. but new sprocket will be on. just need the motor upgraded , fixed and properly mounted. could use some help if not too far to travel. I will bring the bike to you Train or bus if I cant figure it out. DrkAngel or anyone with similar experence near the upstate NY area. I live in Schenectady. I used to Live across the street from the place they filmed beond the pines movie a few years ago.

many ES members said it was a bad idea to do this motor upgrade but what about ED Kloth?
he says its fast as ever and boasts of an execellent build. obviously he has much better skills and way better tools than me or my friends. If I fix my mistakes and modify the installiation of the motor without having to spend much extra money and it actually ends up working then popular opinion on this motor upgrade would most definately have to change. The motor, sprocket and chain assembley were less than $140. The hardware was $30 at home depot. I lack skills and tools and screwed up or it would already be running. These type of motors are all over E bay and very affordable. The performance over the stock currie 24 volt 450 watt motor would more than double with around $250 dollars.

Is that not the purpose of this forum. This could be of benifit to many others looking to upgrade the under powered low performance currie that actually stops when going up an even slight incline hill at 24 volts and and only 12 TO 14 MPH on flat. - to a good performing bike that climbs hills at 10 to 15 mph and reaches about 30 mph on flat. Thats 120% better performance for 1/2 what the bike cost. a good 1000 watt 48 volt hub motor kit is around $300 and dont come with batteries, at least none I ever saw. with the stock currie all that would be needed is 2 extra 10 AH batteries to go with the 2 it comes with. 4 are needed with a new 48 volt hub motor kit. The 48 volt controller and throttle is about $40 so figure about $250 total with 2 - 10 Ah batteries compared to $300 with no batteries with the hub motor kit.

Please think about this and let me know if anybody wants to help so all is not lost. I am trying to hold on to some hope and not get really pissed off about the personal failures I have suffered so far on this build. If I go there with the frustration and negativity then the ezip upgrade project will for shure find its place at the bottom of the mowhawk river. and all future projects could be doomed.

This is not just about this project and I am not just an average e bike rider. I want to persue other projects such as an electric front wheel drive 2 seater trike and eventually a 10 killowatt recumbent drag racing bike. If i were just another e bike owner then I would be happy just bolting something in that would work without any modifications. where is the challenge in that.

I posted many pictures on this post of the installation and am at least smart enough to find and list my mistakes. Unfortuantally I dont have the skills needed yet to fix them yet but will work on it. I am shure some of the master builders on this forum who have done many complicated builds did not wake up one day knowing everything. Ill even bet when they were first starting out they were given advice like "it will never work" or " It will cost too much" or " It sounds like a waste of time" but they did not listen to the negativity and stuck to their guns and now are e bike specialists and can build almost anything like DrkAngel.

I will need all the bluprints, specs and an all parts list on this motor. I also need to learn how to do the brushes. or have someone teach me. I want to learn DC electric motors. I have the time as I am waiting on SSI/SSD next year. call it rehabiliation. maby I can do something with it. I need some good video links and places to get parts cheap. gonna need that little black ring anyway.
. I am depending on some positive feedback here to keep my sanity. I must not try to fix the motor now or try and make it work without the little black ring thing, as if I dont succeed I will probley end up pounding the shit out of the new motor with a sledge hammer. and throwing the bike over a bridge. Please help me with this.

sincerelly latecurtis.

Pull motor apart.
Free up brushes so that brushes push into center.
Push brushes back in slightly.
Place thin wire or similar though the small hole to hold brush (straighten paper clip or similar)
Repeat for each brush.
Reassemble end cap partially.
Pull all 4 wires out.
Close fully and bolt on.
Test.

ok what about this. went to google images to find it.

th994VACZO.jpg

actually is smaller than that about the size of a quarter

sounds a lot easier than it is. wish there was a high definition video of somebody doing it so I could follow by example.

been checking out all video on rebuilding 1020 DC motor replacing brushes and not finding it . many videos of other motors.

Washer might be a thin slightly bent steel "spring washer", to slightly tension shaft, via bearing, in optimal position.
Not necessary for being operational ... but advisable.

copied your instructions on notebook on my desktop. have no internet at home using the wi fi at the laundrymat. will it work without the ring or will it really screw something up?

ok we were posting at same time I will try your instructions. thanks

I fixed the motor. was able to get a little screwdriver in the crack and push the brushes forward. both the bolts it came with must be in all the way or the motor makes a loud noise. There is only two holes to mount the motor and since home cheapot did not have bolts long enough to mount it I had to try and reuse the cheap bent up threaded rod I mounted it with before. reason the motor came apart in first place taking the motor apart to get the rod thru. home depot is a really shitty hardware store and did not have what I needed. I feel like going there and punching somebody in the face. its the nearest hardware store around and is 5 miles away.cost me 5 bucks for a ride there. so the motor wont be installed until I find a real hardware store or the kid next door can get the bent up thin threaded rod thru the two holes to mount the motor to 4 of the brackets. two on each side. if it happens at least the ventalliation holes wont be blocked this time. kid next door disappeared for two days so don't know if he got the brackets on or not. I could not do it and told him I would give him $20 on the first of September if he could. hope he finds a hardware store that sells long enough bolts better than the cheap rods. told him any way he could to do but not to take the original two motor bolts back out. still don't have the new sprocket on either because I still need that special tool some 4 way puller thing. so right now the bike is still sitting. I have to get new doctors and missed 3 appointments 2 for my back and 1 for mental health. also lost that side job on the 21st.This is screwing up my SSI/SSD case also and I will go back to home depot to punch somebody in the face because if they had the right size bolts the motor would at least be mounted now. I blame this all on them its not my fault. I don't even know what hardware store would have the bolts. what do you guys think is a really good hardware store that has everything needed to do custom builds or upgrades like this or similar to this ? also I may have to go to a bike shop to get my sprocket done and they will probley charge me $50 cause I don't have the special tool. where can I get the tool cheaper. its a 4 way puller tool I think for sprockets which are not cassette. let me know what you guys get all the special hardware and tools for these types of builds, rebuilds and upgrades. Is there a place on line. There are not any ma and pop hardware stores around like there were when I grew up nothing but shitty ones now that never have what you need. thanks latecurtis out.

Just curious - why is it a hardware store's fault that they don't keep unusual bolts, rather than your fault for not sourcing everything you need before embarking on a project.

FWIW, I only go to hardware stores - even the huge ones, for the most common items. If I need specialist bolts, I go to a bolt merchant like Coventry Fasteners. If I need specialist electrical, I'll head over to John R Turk, if I need specialist electronics, I head over to Element 14.

Why wouldn't he blame them? He WAS sourcing them, they didn't work out. What are they there for if not to either have it or be the target of ire if they don't.

Don't know if there's a McFadden Dale around Albany but they tend to have a bigger selection.

Got it. Easier to live a life of no accountability than to actually succeed.

I'm gonna rage at the next poor KFC server when they tell me they don't sell Big Macs. I mean, seriously, they're a fast food joint right? Why wouldn't they have a Big Mac - that's also fast food.

Now you're gettin' it. What is socialism for but to dump responsibility onto someone else.

The Big Mac at KFC is going too far. There's no chicken in it. You'll have to settle for demanding the chicken caciatore.

Those are some fancy sporks. Is that a leaked picture from a new upscaled version of KFC?

It's from the Food Channel, I just went looking for Chicken Caciatore and that came up.

Meanwhile, I don't see why anyone who has actually READ this thread would bother griping at the guy. DrkAngel staying with it as long as he did was impressive, but also demonstrated that there's no point in others showing up after the fact and getting started with additional derogs.

I am willing to tolerate and help most anyone ...
As long as they are willing to learn ...

I like to view this as an exercise in patience and durability.
I am centrally located and am saddled with babysitting duty for grand kids and grand nieces and nephews from wildly varied theories of child rearing.

Maybe I am doing penance for being "short" or rude with certain others?
The belligerently ignorant do tend to irk me!
Yes ... I have shown an intolerance towards the close minded.

Being of a scientific bent, I view certainty as a rare and precious thing, if it can even exist.
I am a system thinker ...
I feel a great disdain for the component thinkers who build mental walls using bricks of knowledge-"certainty".
Their rigid beliefs fail to allow challenges to their certainty and often evokes violent, unreasoning retaliation when their certainty is endangered.
They suffer from, what I classify, as a mental constipation.
Nothing able to get in or out.
After prolonged battering their solid walls weaken and are endangered of collapsing ...
Evoking either violent unreasoning retaliation or a mental collapse ...

I got the motor mounted with the hardware I had. not mad at hardware store anymore. The ventilation holes are not blocked at all and motor is mounted very sturdy and lines up with new sprocket.
new sprocket was installed on the wheel and bearings were fixed plus low profile used tire installed at bike shop for $30. bike shop is 5 miles away and they sold me a chain puller for $20 to install my new chain. was wrong puller and took it back and the guy pulled the chain and hooked up the master link and I went home and installed it perfectly. and guess what it makes a horrible grinding noise and when I engage the throttle in gets worse and only goes about 5 mph. really !!! how is this my fault? I did a perfect job installing the motor this time and everything lined up. did not even need to drill anything. cant take any more pictures as I had to sell my laptop. I did everything right. obviously the new sprocket is a real piece of shit. motors new ,controller and throttle are good and batteries are fully charged. I am not taking responsibility for this. Doug laughed when he saw the new sprocket and said what kind of junk is this and it was installed at a bike shop really!!!!

Why should I have to blame myself when I do everything I can to do the job right but am working with inferior or defective parts. It cost me $100 for the motor $40 for the new sprocket and chain deal and $30 for the hardware and $35 for cabs and busses to get to the bike shop and hardware store and all I got to show for it is a piece of shit!!!!! really. my ol lady is crying cause im so miserable and thinks its her fault. She stopped me from pouring gas on it and setting it on fire last night. I had to get another lawyer and refile for my ssi because I missed so many doctors appointments. I fell down walking 3 miles to the grocery store and someone had to call an ambulance because I could not walk anymore.. Im shure you are all luckey enough or rich enough to drive a f------ car or truck but im not and would rather be dead than drive around in one of those power chairs i cant even ride the bus because anymore because I threatened to punch a driver in the face and he called the police.

The only mistake I made was seeking advice from this fourm. all you rich guys with your fancy builds. thought this was a bike fourm for ebikes not for betty crocker recipies. should have got a bolt in motor is all you all have to say. well if that's the case why do you all build these fancy bikes that go really fast and look really cool. why don't you all just drive around in a stock junk currie that goes about 10 mph and stopps dead on little bitty hills. sick of your bad advice and insults putting me down. get it right or just close this forum down!!!

You asked for our advice ...
but then refused to take it!
Instead, you hunted around, on your own, and decided to purchase an incompatible motor, against the advice of everyone.

If you ask for our advice, then refuse to take it ... how can we be to blame?

For a bolt in replacement, this will run 17-18 MPH and won't overheat as easily.

latecurtis, I'm sorry things haven't gone smoothly for you. Just for future reference so that I don't misguide anyone else, how should this first response to your posts have been worded differently?

You need to look in the mirror and understand you are responsible for your actions and man up. quit blaming others for your bad decisions and start acting like a man and not a child. good luck junior. :D
