As the Hub Motor Turns and the Lipo Fire Burns. Dirty little carbon footprints. / Brush vs brushless. FX 75-5 zero motors vs Astro.
Recently my ol lady got a letter from the state of MO. It is regarding unsettled property. She will be getting a check for an undetermined amount of money. We could not get an amount over the phone. A paper has to be notarized and sent in then within 90 days a check will be issued.
She has been unhappy for years now about me riding around and spending money on e bikes when we need a car. She has a point as e bikes are no good in rain and snow. Also I failed at building a tandem or sidecar to include her in my personal transportation.
After purchasing a car or truck if there is money left over after insurance I will be able to invest in further e bike projects. I am very against anything gas. My #1 complaint and am sure LiveForPhysics agrees is why should we have to inhale poison fumes every day especially in any city.
Even my ol lady agrees that people who live in the city age different from people in the country. A lot of city people have grey looks on their faces. Carbon monoxide and other poison gas spitting out of exhaust pipes are most definitely the cause. I am currently pleading my case for her to at least invest in a hybrid since we probably won’t be able to afford electric exclusively unless the check is very large.
My point is I know nothing about them. I know little about electric cars period as I am still learning about e bikes. All I know is that electric fork motors hooked up to standard transmissions to the reverse gear have been done. Also I know about 20 or more batteries are required and expensive controllers such as Curtis or Kelly are popular choices. I know Golden motors makes 10 and 20 kilowatt motors for really small vehicles around 1500 pounds.
As far as hybrids go I think it should be a law that all cars produced from now on be hybrid and running gas in any city or town should be illegal just like smoking cigarettes are in public places. The law should be in full effect within the next five years and within the next 10 years or by 2025 all gas and diesel motors should be converted to hydrogen or just running off electric motors exclusively.
Unfortunately with the influence of big oil tycoons on upper government we the common people have to be continuously subject to poison gasses in the air we breathe. I however for one do not wish to further contribute to this calamity. Any advice on what type of hybrid I should be looking for if in fact the check will even be big enough would be appreciated.
I doubt I will be able to afford anything new. A used hybrid is probably a realistic goal at this point. I was told that only the manufacturer would be able to repair a hybrid and that upgrades are close to or impossible. If a vehicle is capable of running even at a limited speed say 40mph or less on electricity without gas and if distance is limited to say 15 or 20 miles without gas I don’t see why the electric parts could not be replaced or upgraded.
The electric part of a hybrid must include an electric DC motor either brushed or brushless. Also a controller and throttle of some type and of course batteries. I know little about leaf batteries. I believe they are smaller, lighter and more efficient than LIPO or LIFEPO4. I imagine they are very expensive though. Any help on that subject would be greatly appreciated.
The only positive thing I can say about the gas end of the situation is if I need to travel a long distance to get to where a fellow ES member or members with the experience to upgrade the hybrid to the point where I can run it off of electric exclusively or at least several hundred miles so I would only need gas on really long road trips or cross country I guess then at least the gas will get me to that person or persons.
I will first have to get the hybrid then find that person or persons. People on this forum who are passionate on green energy and saving our environment and have the experience required to do such upgrades and or modifications are who I am referring to.
This forum is about helping each other out. I have gotten a lot of help here and have tried to help out fellow ES members like Skalabala. I don’t know how to get his motor going but asked several people like Thud, Dan and even Sunder today to check it out as I don’t have that level of knowledge yet.
I am not asking anyone to help ME (personally) on this subject because this is not about ME . It is much larger than that! I could just go and buy a big old pickup truck with a big stinky gas motor that leaks oil all over and go around scrapping metal and polluting our air and environment like most people would do.
What I am saying, whether anyone likes me or hates me please help out our environment! Helping me find and upgrade a hybrid is contributing to keeping the air we breathe and our environment clean. I may not live that long so if I were just thinking about myself why would I really care? I am 50 years old and I have a bad heart valve and could very well be six feet underground in 10 or 20 years if not sooner.
Future generations will suffer dramatically from greenhouse gasses, holes in the ozone and global warming as well as all the ill health effects of breathing in poison fumes their entire life and generations before them on this planet. If people don’t change the path we are on there will be little hope for the human race in the future!
pic1 shows the dual motor set up. I only got one motor. I gave the other away to someone who needed it for a scooter so they said. Photo suite shows how easily the dual motor set up could work. However my plans are the FX 75-5 motor. If it don’t happen two 3300W AmpFlow motors will be good for about 60mph. A third pic triple motors ( did that after a few beers) and possible fourth and fifth on the front are also possible but ridiculous compared to a good brushless motor.
Skalabala is 100% correct on the superiority of brushless motors. He may have picked the wrong one however. We shall see. I am wondering how two of those 20 kilowatt brushless Astro motors would compare to one brushless FX motor. Would it go faster and which setup would get to 80mph first? My guess is the FX motor. It says 70 foot pounds of torque. I don’t know what the Astro motors torque output is though.
I also heard that brushed motors such as the AmpFlow motor work better than brushless motors running off a single controller running two motor sprockets and one wheel sprocket. I actually did it earlier with the small brushed motors on this post and posted many pics and a few videos. Astro motors are brushless so a motor on the back and the other motor on the front wheel could still do the trick off a single controller. They just can’t share a single wheel sprocket. It is due to timing and I have learned this.
I don’t know the physics on DC electric motors though. I would guess they are more torque than gas but less horsepower as electric seems quicker and could soon rule 1/4 mile drag racing but it will be awhile before they can outrun gas on the flat. The 426 Hemi broke all land and speed records when it came out and exceeded 420mph on the sand flats about 40 years ago now. What is the fastest an electric vehicle has traveled today?
Pic2 shows how with touches and a welder the mounts for the brakes could easily be moved back to accommodate the 20" wheel. 20" forks on the front would enable brakes there also. I am not the only one who questions the importance of front brakes. My best friend Eric also unhooked them for years and years. He told me the story a few nights ago. They called him road rash in school.
He was going down a big hill and locked up the front brakes and flipped over the handlebars and scraped up his face real bad he said. I did it around the same age but was more scared than injured. We grew up about 30 miles apart and did not know each other until 2007. We both rode most of our lives without front brakes. However I do believe DA and you guys who are stating front brakes are 70 to 90% of stopping power compared to rear brakes. You scientifically stated and proved the point. I respect scientific evidence.
However as far as riding safely is concerned brakes take a distant back seat to common sense and being alert and aware of your environment. A good BMX guy for example would probably be able to ride anywhere with no brakes and crazy fast with back brakes alone. Front brakes would not matter much to a rider of that skill caliber.
It is more the rider than it is brakes that prevent accidents. I did not even apply brakes when I wrecked with the Schwinn three weeks or so ago. I did not see the bad spot in the road because I can’t see things in the dark! That is the worst injury I ever had. I don’t think I ever got hurt on a bike due to faulty or no brakes.
I may talk about going fast and may succeed in doing it but I assure you the faster I go the better aware of my surroundings especially in front of me will be and at a greater distance. Even though the Schwinn is capable of going about 25mph I rarely ever do it. I ride it on the sidewalk at about 5 mph a lot and maybe 10 on average on the street but sometimes get to 25mph but only for brief periods of time maybe 2 or 3 blocks. I can stay ahead of traffic long enough to cross the road and make a left turn when going downtown for example. Proper judgement supersedes stopping power.
It is almost winter and they are still catching up on pot holes around here. Please post anything you can on choosing a used hybrid / upgrades and modifications on hybrid vehicles. Also DA, I would really like to know how two 20 kilowatt Astro motors would compare to the FX motor.
I am thinking about an East coast vs west coast Death Bike race for the future maybe. LiveForPhysics has the west coast death bike. Maybe we should research and develop an East coast version. You are the scientist who does the cool graphs speed vs watts. I love them and have seen many. Please post one for the hell of it if you can.
On that note maybe I should not open another beer and eat some cookies, milk and trail mix and call it a night. That statement definitely requires a reboot for my tumor less brain (thank god). I will post this tomorrow. Post something about hybrids if you can. A new post under large EV general discussion named hybrids has been created if you wish to post there. Thanks.
Very Sincerely LC. out.
