I just bought a used iZip I-500 from a guy off Craigslist and I'm planning on making something along the lines of MelonScooter out of it. I just measured the battery box and it looks like about 5.25" wide by about 12" long by 3-3.25" tall, so Wolfram Alpha tells me I can just barely fit a 16s7p pack of 18650s into this setup if I find a new home for the controller. If I go with the LG HG2 cells from Queen Battery, then that should give me 21Ah at 57.6V nominal, or about 1.2kWh. I was planning on using the 130KV melon motor from Alien Power Systems, with the internal Hall sensor board, which would give me 7500RPM at nominal voltage. If I gear the melon for 40mph that then becomes 538rpm on a 12" wheel, which means I'd need about a 14:1 gear reduction from the motor to the wheel in order to make this system work.

My questions are basically:

Do you think fitting 7p in there is realistic given how tight the dimension is? Also, if anyone has both calipers and an i-500 I'd be super grateful for more exact width and height measurements?

Do you guys think it would be possible to build a rear end for the setup that mounts to the wheel dropouts and has both the controller and motor mounted to it without having to weld the frame?

Do you think 14:1 is feasible for a single-stage reduction or would I be better off doing a 3.5:1 and a 4:1 reduction in series with each other?
