Truckrun RN04 hub motor with torque sensor

I'm thinking about trying the Truckrun RN04 rear hub motor with integrated torque sensor. A few questions:
  1. Is it any good? Or are there better options with through axle?
  2. What kind of controller would I need? On Aliexpress there are kits, but it is unclear which controller is included.

This KClamber torque sensor transmits the data via UART to the controller by the white wire that normally carries the speed signal.
The only commercial system, that I know, the Yose A3 set, uses a Lishui controller.
The Varstrom offer on AliExpress shows a controller with a drawing number starting with LD-xx, that is typical for Lishuis.

Thanks! I'd prefer to buy it separately. Which Lishui could it be? And is there a way to tell whether they support such a motor?

Simply forget it. You won't find a controller, that reads the UART sensor data from the white wire on Amazon, AliExpress or elsewhere.
I've written my own firmware for that cassette sensor and use it on the JYTcon battery integrated controller from Yose Power. I don't believe, that you want to go that way ;)

Maybe this sensor gets more popular in future, then the availability of suitable controllers will be better. Obviously more and more offers are found recently:

Grintech sells motors with this sensor also, but they use a "translator" that converts the UART data to the common PAS and torque signals.

I bought the whole kit from Aliexpress. I paid 283$ and it even came as complete wheel, not too bad (though the rim is not very wide and looks cheap, will re-spoke it after some testing). I will report as soon as I got a battery.

No, there are various UART protocols. Can you post a detail photo of the controller and the display? Is there an imprint on the backside of the display?
If it is a Lishui controller it will use the 5s protocol.
 
If you have an USB-UART converter, you can listen to the byte stream that the display sends, then we can identify the protocol easily. The DZ40 is available with Bafang and with Tongsheng protocol at least....
If you scan the QR code on the label, you get
25053002030969/BF-V1.08.0/010802-0051
I guess this BF will stand for Bafang...

Hi, happy new year!
I'm quite impressed by the motor/kit! For testing, I've installed it with a rack battery and I was on the bike for a first test ride after about 30min. The integrated torque sensor makes it super easy.

Riding feels very much like a normal bike, which is exactly what I wanted. It's very quiet (I hear it at <10 kph but not much and not at all when going faster). But I only tested it for like 5 kilometers so far, have to finish the build with properly integrating the battery.

I think by default it is set to 32kph, but it can be changed with the display I think (haven't done it yet).

The controller dimensions are 83x53x29mm. Yes, you can set the speed limit to any number up to 99.
 
@Scaff Did the kit you bought come with a throttle or can it be added? I take it the torque sensor works with the kit so it's already built into the motor? I am asking because truckk run website says the torque sensor is optional. They even have a video how to mount it. and would you be so kind to provide us with the link or an indication where you got this? Thank you

Is the motor still running nicely?
What is your top speed with the motor.
And I am also wondering how you source disc brake rotors for that motor. It doesn’t look like a standard I know.
 
Yes, it’s still going nicely. But I re-spoked the wheel and had other stuff to finalize, so again only a few kilometers.
Top speed is hard to say. I am easily going >30kph with the cargo bike now if I don’t put the limit, and I probably have also been >40. But I’m in quite ok shape on the bike and also had an average close to 25 with the cargo bike without the motor.
The rotor is standard 6 bolt.
