Only about 36 bikes ended up racing which is a little disappointing

Bairdco got 5th overall, he said 1st was an electric bike with a lot of HP

2nd was Alex the "Blue Fox" on a 9 HP Morini

3rd was Dave31 on his 5.8 HP Morini

Yah... lotta HP. That must have been it...

Someone needs to straighten them out, since Paul's max power draw during the race was only 5.2hp, so the max power out was maybe 4.5hp.

12 laps in the main event, 0.79 mi laps, starting voltage 76.1v (4.23 v/cell), Vmin 66.7, Amax 56.7, maxS 44.3, Ave S. 31, 6.8ah 483wh consumed, 47 wh/mi.
Drive:
1.7:1 8mm pitch, 15mm width primary belt reduction with ENO hidden inside 48T pulley, 6.15:1 219 chain secondary, sprocket on rotor mount of hub, total reduction 10.5:1, Turnigy 130kv 80/100 with external halls at 17.1degree spacing
Controller:
ebikes.ca 40 amp 12 fet infineon, modified resistors for high voltage, and shunt soldered about 15-20% of its length
Batteries:
Secret lithium ion pouch cells 18S2P, 20ah x 66v.
Bike weight unknown, but we guessed 60-65lbs.

Looking at just the electric bits, it makes me wonder if the direct-friction outrunners could be contenders.

If so, imagine how many e-folks could join in, without major mechanical complexities.

Thanks for those detailed performances data from your kit and the C-A.. it really help us to give a real idea on what kind of race it was !

I know Luke had ALOT of power with that sevcon controller and i wonder if he could had reduced the phase current a bit to perserve the motor would have helped !

You had 3500W max and he had probably adjusted max power to get around 10-20kW ?

That make me wonder if he would have set everything to get like 5-6kW max to the 5303 You and him would have beed racing together for the entire race!

Luke what was your controlelr setting?... any data from the C-A?

Yeah.. Just like many wonder now.. We hope that everyone that have put their blood on the raceway will recover as we wish!

116v, 250amps (motor current). The sevcon was a punk to set up so we used a Kelly.

The x5 motor simply isn't powerful. We hit it with a truckload of voltage and current and it just disappointed me with its soggy performance, and it was even in a small rim.

The motors on JohninCR's bikes feel like twice the torque and speed for less input power. (just a seat of the pants feel).
If you want a monster hub, and don't mind welding on your own custom axle and freewheel and brake mount, his big scooter hubs rock.

WOW! Congratulations Paul thats how to do it, show up your first time and spank everyone's butt. That bike was very impressive and your track lines were awesome, you must have some track experience if not you need to tell me your secret lol.

Thanks to all you guys who made the effort to participate in Death Race 2011, we love having you electric guys out there and I know a few guys are saying....HMMMMMMM? lol. Charlie at MHC really got a kick out of your electric bikes and I believe he is going to do a story on his web site all about it. I will pass it along as soon as its posted.

I hope Amberwolf is alright, i got his crash on video and I will upload all the videos and photos as soon as I get a chance. I am a bit sore and dealing with some real bad road rash from my fall in practice.

#19 Paul from Oregon won on his electric bike, that dude has track experience his lines where flawless. Even if he did not have so much hp he still would have done very well.

# 00 Alex Campa on His Santa Cruz Scooter Works BoXer got 2 and I got 3rd on my BoXer.

I had so much fun! I got to meet Baidco and Scotto, Pat and many others. Piston Bikes guys are a blast to hang out with.

I will get some videos and photos up guys as soon as I can with also where everyone finished.

I had a crash in practice and man am I sore. I got road rash all on my left side from my shoulder down to about my knee. I woke up to find my left ankle swelled up and I dont even remember hurting it.

Congratulations to Paul. I'm very impressed with your Turnigy motor setup.

Luke and other racers, you really did your best. I am sure you will have more chances to win next time after the great race experience. Just for my curiosity, from the video I have noticed that most electric bikes have got more advantage than the gas engine ones. The opportunity for them to accelerate is only around 5-10 seconds before they enter the next corners. How much time have you had to accelerate between corners and at what speed?

Anther dumb question is was it scary to lean to the side when going round a corner? What do you think are the best tires to use in the situation like this?

I believe with the proper data, we can build better racing electric bikes for the next race(s).

Great to see the vid. There are numerous reports in 1890's US newspapers about "electric bicycle races", but watt they were referring to were bike races held in the evenings under the (exciting/new) electric arc lighting...

Man o man... if i ever win the lottery.... i'll be there and bring every bike in the collection to have people step up and have a run... that looked like so much fun.. and perfect weather on top of it !

Unlike luke, i'd be the guy with a running bike, a backup bike, and spare parts to build 4 more at the track, lol.. dude.. you need a mechanic to build you one and hand over to you for the ride.

Looks pretty fast from the video..the gassers that ride here have an advantage in that they know the circuit, I am pretty sure a well setup hubbie would be able to compete?? that said I am well pleased an RC bike won as they need a shot in the arm as far as reliability goes, it looks pretty certain to me from what I have seen so far that sensored is the way to go with an RC setup if you want reliability and RC esc if you want mega power on a knife edge..

I used to ride 2 strokes they never sounded as horrible as these things :? ewww and some people think RC drives are noisy :lol: so looking forward to seeing more footage from the race, I have a kart track a few miles from me I may sneak on there with my bike sometime.

Hey Luke you were riding in CR in sandals and a shirt...but here full leathers and a helmet!! big shame the motor let you down I hope AW is feeling better, thats quite an ask racing that track if you havent done it before esp at night as well.

Hey! My bike made it there and ran in top 5 till the last lap of the heat until the darn x5 rolled smoke.

Next year, custom frame. Massive non-hub motor. Less battery. Less tire. And most important, getting ready a month early for testing/development time.
