Turnigy HXT Powered Custom Cruiser Worklog

Good to see you out having a blast on the thing, I was wondering how long it'd be before you broke something

It does pain me to sit here feeling miserable and knocking back endones while a guy with dodgy legs is out roaring around no doubt grining like an idiot the whole time

Kim,

Do not worry too much about the specific tooth profile (HTD, GT2, etc). I have mixed them with great success! Especially with your homemade pulley teeth. It should not be an issue what-so-ever.

I will check with my belt supplier (custom RC heli belts) to see if they have a sleeve that they can get a belt made for you that is Kevlar corded. That is the ultimate solution to this. If you were overtorquing the teeth, they would have shredded off. It looks, to me, like the cords could not take the abuse. Been there, dome that. :)

HAHA poor Hyena...I almost feel lil sorry for you buddy....almost

That would be fantastic Matt! If they can do them at 1235mm length and 15mm wide in either the GT2 or HTD i would purchase a couple of them one for spare :) I also don't think the belt has been over tensioned, the teeth are fine (actually will save this belt for future "toothing of pulleys" ) I'm hoping its the fact the belt had been trashed previously being behind the failure, new belt, sides on the pulley correct tension and :: fingers crossed:: ill get a few miles on it before it needs replacing, not as if every take off is maximum throttle  ....hahahha yeah right.. none of you are going to buy that are you  Thanks again Matt...

lol.. that is one long belt.. considering your situation, would have been an idea to rig up some hand cranks to make your way home in the event of a system failure. ( would have to mounted to the handlebars so you can steer.. ugh... that might be messed up and ugly tho.. )

Or.. get a " RELIABLE " hub motor !!  ( We need a tonge sticking out smiley )

A redundant 'limp home' friction roller system would be better.
And the linear actuator of the support wheels should be automatically activated at low speed in combination with a motor/controller/BMS error. That would add some safety. Are there any error signals from the controller or GG's BMS?
Does the Infineon controller have an error output?

Oh he's getting there little by little. AJ prizes the silence of a belt, yet wants to hear the vacuum cleaner sound of a high rpm outrunner.?????????

Instead of a friction drive backup, a small geared hubbie in the front wheel would go nicely.

Yeah...Methy has had huge reliability with his motors lemme look into getting one of them frock
motors, ill order a nice new wardrobe of pink dresses from J.J & Hyenas fav shop when i do too shall I

olaf-lampe - no chance in hell of a roller setup ever being on one of my bikes, less chance there would be a frock motor but not by much, as for the linear actuators being 'automated' again not a chance in hell of that happening, there are times i dont want the actuators down i don't always use them i have enough leg strength to keep the bike upright, the actuators are more for when i get on and off the bike or stop for long periods when on the bike. If i stop on unlevel ground the actuators automatically coming down could even be dangerous. There could be improvement but for my needs they are perfect as they are.

J.J- There theRE mate, have you had your medication today? perhaps its time for a little lay down mate seems the heat is affect your thought process.....again  I know it must affect hearing, i listened to a couple of frock motors this week (non geared) they make a god awful sound if thats your idea of 'silent' i think you all need your hearing checked.

Shall head out and get a start on the mods for the pulley in an hour or so shall report back when i have something of interest :)

Oooohhh bumma about the belt bro...hope the shipping goes quickly. You might want to have a box of them delivered in case you run into another snag. I go through that problem with my FW crank clutch bearings...o course I don't have the ENO so that's my own damn fault! They are a week out usually so I want to get a more failproof item to put in there. Also my new controller arrived this evening after I hooked a battery up backward and thwarted the thing. This new one's chill though...24-60v now instead of being stuck with only a 24v controller! can't wait to try 36 v on there...

Again, hope the shipping goes quickly!

"
Again, hope the shipping goes quickly!"

story of all our lives!!!

mike (meanwells just showd up!!)

So...I went out and grabbed a 1200x600x3mm sheet of
aluminium on Thursday, I also picked up some button
head stainless steel cap screws washes and nylocs
to match. Grabbed some Devcon also in case i needed
it as i was out.

Here's what i did with them-->

Custom_pulley_sides_series_pic_1.jpg

Very happy with the result, i actually like the look more with the sides.

Pretty straight forward, makred out some side plates
using the rear pulley as a 'template' I cut one, then used
that to mark the next. Angle grinder was used to cut
the outside of the side plates while the dremel and
reinforced cuttoff disks took care of the inside are
(the aluminium actually saw off my 3rd Dremel!
had to go by a replacement to finish the second disk
yesterday afternoon.. :-( )
Once the two sides
were cut, they were drilled and bolted together
matched up, i also made a ghetto jig out of
MDF so as the router could be used to get the disks
perfectly circular. I would usually use the linishers
sanding disk for this but was out of sandpaper for
it grrr...hence I had to improvise, worked iut very
well in the end.

The random belt offs formerly not seen with the
old sturmey archer setup should now be a thing of
the past, with the ENO and freewheel hub now on
the cruiser I can put more power through the rear
wheel this wasn't possible before, the 3 speed it
just skipped new setup requires more belt tension
to stop belt skipping teeth as a result the small
amount of 'play' in the eno sees the pulley tilted
ever so slightly sideways under hard acceleration,
the belt would come off on occasion, not everytime,
it was totally random, the addition of side plates
on the pulley will hopefully make this issue a thing
of the past. The front pulley i have decided to leave
as is, the belt has never slipped off the front pulley.

Back to playing the waiting game for the replacement belts,
Matt.P has put through the order THANKYOU again Matt...

Back when i have belts ...

KiM

Everytime you touch that pulley it gets purtier and purtier. :) It reminds me now of some of the best-looking "open reel" tape drive reels I've seen, which I wish I could have had just to hang on my wall and look at as art. ;)

Very pro looking! I knew this worklog wasnt over!

HAHA yeah never bloody ending money pit this thing is, it cost me 60 bucks for the aluminium
thats only 1/4 of the sheet in pic, its half a sheet thats the smallest they sell all i needed
was two pieces 30x30 ... THEN another 120 bucks at Coventries for stainless steel fasteners
Devcon and a 50 freakin dollar air die grinder bit add in about 5 hours of cutting, grinding &
polishing & we have a freakin expensive pulley :: fingers crossed:: Recumpence can get his
hands on some kevlar reinforced belts for me, i have pmed Matt also asking if/when he gets
the belts to also set me up with a chain drive setup for when i make the move to dual motors and 66-88v setup.
Cheers mate :)

Thanks amberwolf, i think i know the reels your talking about to, I have also been thinking about your suggestion
to paint the crankset, instead of the black 'highlights' i will do them blue, i thought i could also paint the
pulley and leave the new sides highly polished aluminium? What ya thinkz? either way will be in a fortnight if it happens
i dont have enough blue and i ain't got 35 bucks to spare on another can of Candy Apply Blue after Fridays expenditure
blew more than half my pay in a morning :( ...

I am somewhat hopeful i might see the new belts Matt.P_ has ordered for me before next weekend, realistically though prolly be
after next weekend... Miss riding the bike already :: sigh :: GGoodrums components might arrive in the meantime will give
me something to do, re-configuring the pack OH after 4 charges the Lipos are even better balanced than
when i first charged them HOW THE frock that happen! they are all within in .02 of each other
before some were .05 different... Havent used the Battery Medic on the new packs at all
they were all in the vicinity of 3.8volts from HK. I have only been charging them to 4.0v
and not letting them down past 3.7v eaisly done when my rides are usually less than 2km's
a time...I go for ablat about 5 times a day each time i return i pop the charger on, hoping to get some longevity
out of the packs :) 15ah is more than enough for me too i have decided so 66v 10ah is a real possibility
and doable....now :p

Back soon anywayz chaps

hi A.J
love your work mate always have and always will..really admire tha skills that come out of that workshop of yours in w.a,very nice :D (when you moving to sydney)

aussie if ya dont mind mixing chemistrys,i could send you over say 24v of lifepo4 to boot as a booster pack or something from my recycled cells collection i recently attained, maybe we go halfves in postage or something..other wise if your not up for being in the mix.thats cool..im not sure if its a wise move to so or not...

anyways a.j love ya work mate, very nice
Alex

Thanks mate and appreciate the offer for cells but
i don't think the lifepo4s would work very well with the
lipos i use mate. The lipos i use are 20c i pull 140amp
from them when i feel the need...the neeeed for speeeed
hahaa... Thanks though bud nice of you to offer... :)

eeeew that doesn't look too flash does it Amberwolf...maybe ill just give it some more polishing treatment while i waitz for the beltz to arrive haha...cheers mate...

KiM

p.s haha sorry mate i won't be moving to "Sidiney" nice place to visit enjoyed it but wouldn't want to live there, to fast paced and BIG for me, we is more laid back in the West i think...

hi a.j

regarding syd, your very right..everyone is in a rush here,no hello yellow mellow koalas here mate..+some of the laws in w.a seem great to very laid back 8) ..compared to hear too   your cruiser would help great to keep up with the pace here

but anyways yeh i would like to cruise around in w.a with ya,looks like you have some serious hills round there ay..with my hub id need 100v + the amps just to keep up with you and your geared emonster ha ha ha..

ive got to build me a hipowered geared one day i reckon..but with my skills a.j that will never happen .
love how the geared motors sound when there banging..sweet sweet sound.

take care mate..and best of luck
Alex

Yeah +1 for no blue and just polishing it. I think there's enough blue colour coded stuff on the bike now without doing it. You don't want it to look like a riced up car with blue/red/what ever anodised bits everywhere.

Ooow Alex, don't try and compare frockies to AJ's set up, you'll be sorry...

Jester me man..........

Im all for doing things yourself, Im consistantly blown away with what little machinery turns out such great products you all create, but in the instance of those 2 side plates, I think it could of been more economical to get them laser cut. I can tell you for sure even if it was a once off, small job like that, i couldnt see it costing more than $15 each inc material......well I wouldnt of quoted anymore than that anyway and I used to chuck in the offcut in the center too if they wanted it for such things like that. Anyway just something to think about, if you can draw a simple 2D shape in cad to scale, that is all they need, but remember only fixed radius arcs or straight lines.....anything fancy with splines usually turns into a headache their end. You may like doing stuff like that yourself i guess though.......if you were over here id get stuff like that cut for you for fweeeee hahaha

Certainly have, Matt.P will be up with his geared frock motor we shall see how well that goes compared to the cruiser

Yes shall give the blue a miss on the pulleye i think i will do the crank details in the blue and give them more of a polish though
i think that will be a nice subtile touch, i also want these pedals... when i have some spare cash to throw about. Not much good for those that pedal but be good to put my
floppy feetz on i think...

And yes rodgah, i do prefer doing things myself when i can.

Did you have any better luck looking for work in the West on the mines mate? I recall you said the agencies were hard to deal with.

I wish it were true but i sadly dont own any houses, and most other things I have owned in progression not accumulation. I did have a boat but it was a sailing one....a 14ft windrush cat, I only sold it a few weeks ago, was good fun though when you didnt think about the tiger shark breading grounds, crocodiles and box jellyfish underneith you.

No and yes. They are a weird bunch, then seem hell impressed that you have skills but impossible to get a job out of, yet they advertise daily. Unfortunatly I havnt had a job for over a month now and im starting to feel the pinch. Im selling the bike too as I think im going to have to move and might go back to IT as mining isnt working out(which means moving to possibly brisbane or canberra). Dont get me wrong the money is great but I more love the fact that they look after you, sick of working in shit holes, getting used for what you know etc etc and not getting paid properly. Might even join the defence forces if I get despirate enough. Anyways rant over.
