Motobecane 40T moped conversion

That's a classy looking moped....! It even matches the bug!

Hi Mike,

I used a nylon "link belt" - a Fenner Drives Power Twist ("A" profile v-belt for power tools) and a 5" pulley.

The Power Twist belt is a nice product if you're going for a V-belt drive, for whatever reason - something Miles advised me was low efficiency. The flexibility reduces noise, but I don't know if it improves efficiency or reduces it compared to a standard V-belt.

If you are planning on upgrading to lithium it might be worth figuring out or measuring the efficiency. It might cost less get a given range by upgrading to toothed belts due to money saved on batteries.

I googled the link V-belts a bit and found a green 5 ft at Harbor freight for $25, and a 5 ft red power twist at Graingers for $36.

Since the 4-5% inefficiency of v-belts is attributed at least partially to the force required to bend them, I wonder if the link belts avoid some of that.

I suppose a potential drawback of link v-belts would be that they are not reversible.

OK!

Ran it last week with a 5" drive pulley and it was a SLINGSHOT.

80kph no problem.

7AH SLA done in 2mins.

So.

Regeared today with a 4" drive pulley and it's much more civil. Ran it for 20 minutes around the neighbourhood before it started to sag.

What a pleasure to drive.

Pictures soon!

Malcolm - think chain driven plus a little belt whine. At low speed there is a faint click of the bicycle freewheel on the pedal side.

Moped sprockets are not super-high-tolerance, to be blunt, though the Doppler aluminum pulley improved things I suspect your bike would sound a little better.

415 chain is a nice size for this, though, good dimensions for the power. I have an Iris chain on at the moment but am considering upgrading.

One unintended benefit of using the PowerTwist belt is that the drive pulley is able to spin ever so slightly (even with good tension on the belt) as the inertia of starting from a dead stop is overcome.

Though it doesn't "leap" off the line and smoke the tire as I would have liked, this small cushion could be helpful to the well-being of my powertrain, I think.

The eTek's brushes seem to make a little squealing noise, but nothing that worries me.

Thanks Mike
The reason I asked is I'm interested in how we can make EVs sound attractive. It may seem like a trivial point, but I think some people are put off by the mechanical whine that they make. I know our neighbour's dog hates the noise my bike makes. I was pleased when I watched the videos of the race bikes in the TTXGP. The higher frequency of the chain drive almost sounded like a turbine on some of them. I intend one day to replace the chain drive on my bike with a toothed belt drive, not particularly for efficiency or reliability, but just to see(hear) what it sounds like.

Very neat conversion by the way. I like the retro look :)

Argh!

It's not "retro"!

It's actually old! This is a 1973 model. "Retro" is a New Beetle, New Mini, Chevy HHR, PT Cruiser, the new Vespas.

I understand why people keep saying "retro"... but I hate it.

It doesn't "look like it's old", I know. Shiny paint, reupholstered seat, new grips, etc.

You can't really say it's been redesigned, though. It's still authentically old!

Anyway.

Regarding making electric vehicles "sound attractive" - silence is the most attractive sound, if you ask me.

All the mechanical noise that used to be drowned out by gas engines is suddenly front and center  ...

And now everyone is listening for that real finesse - a machine that sounds "well oiled".

Belt drives will be the way to go.

My sincere apologies. As someone who makes a living using words, I should choose them more carefully. I get lazy in my own time, though.
What I meant, was that your conversion complements the bike, it doesn't look out of place. Is that better?

mmmmmmmm...count down to copy...

Interest is building in the moped world - I may have orders for a couple mount kits.

Anyone interested in one, or in CNCing a small batch for me?

A waterjet could do it too. It's just 3/8" plate.

Matt?

Also I would love to get these anodized...

What is that, a Peugeot?

Do you know of the Moped Army? Bet you can pick one up trolling around there. Nice bike! I had two Pug 103s.

I'm setting up to make a dozen Electrobecane mounts - CNC cut and anodized. These will mount an eTek or Mars to the 40 and 50 series Motobecane models. (The 50 is the same as the 40 in most respects but it has rear suspension. My bike is a 40.)

I have orders for three of these mounts already, at a target price of $150.

You may see a few of these fine folks over here soon!

SLAs seem to be breaking in. Charging faster and outputting more. Or maybe that's just me getting excited. Could be the bike wearing in too. Considering a Headway 48V 10Ah pack from EV Components (Frodus) anyway. Need range!

Loosened the chain a half-turn on the adjustment bolts and lost half the noise. It was too tight.

Then tried my first wheelie.

OH MY GOD I love this bike.

Wow I like those bikes. Here's one just waiting for electric motor ...

Yeah, I'm a member over on The Army, too. That thing is 95% a Pug 103, it even has the same long swing arm, just a diffrent tank and frame. My 2 seat 103 U3 even uses the same seat as that thing. I'm thinking all that open space pluss a hollowed out tank, and under the seat is open, would hold a lot of A123s, Headways, or even Lipo
