My econo-e-bike

Feeling solid when climbing stairs sounds good, that's usually one of the harder things for someone with damaged knee cartilage to do.

^--true!!!!

update; Only thing still swollen is my knee, but not too bad. The scab came off, but left a divot about the size of a pea that is (re)closing up slowly. That was the main impact point and where the blood vessel burst, making my leg swell up. I've had this kind of injury before from motorcycle crashes. They fill in over time.
I went in for my follow-up and got x-rayed. I looked at them while waiting for the orthopedic surgeon, and it didn't look good, to the untrained eye. Well, my eyes were definitely untrained, and the doc explained while the bone starts healing, it starts as cartilage and won't show up on the xray until after it becomes calcified. He upped the chances of healing fully to 90%, told me I only need to wear the sling when not at home, and don't raise my arm up. Follow up in 6 weeks. Still no biking.

To me this is the green light to start ordering replacement parts and inventorying/locating the ones I already have, to repairs and upgrades. I guess it's also a good point to step back and think about whether to switch out my frame and fork, since I'll otherwise be spending a chunk of money on a derailleur hanger, that's almost what I snatched the frame up for from Craigslist (I sped all the way when I saw it). My fork seals are shot as well. I got a common seatpost size when I bought my Thudbuster, and shimmed it, in case I ever wanted to change frames in the future.
My Grin digital switch got impacted. It still works, but I may make a custom one with better buttons. Ideally, my rim could do with re-dishing, about 1/16" over. Also my right dropout could be kissed with round file by maybe 1/64" or so for better wheel alignment. I'm pretty sure I have a small power source for the torque sensor , but I need to find it. I'm contemplating replacing my chain, since I'll be changing the chainring when installing the torque sensor. I need to make a full list...

Got xrays to share? was it a big break?

I had a full length controlled fracture of my lower tibia to correct a bone deformity. Took about 9 months to completely heal. I took minerals like crazy and mechanically loaded with weight it as much as possible when i was finally able to, to help speed up the process.

A collar bone should take a fraction of the time, but bone healing is still dreadfully slow.

What a spirit. You already want to fix the bike. For me, i'm usually spooked for a while after a fall. Lately, i am working on some safety devices for upright bikes, which would allow you to, if you were able to stay on the bike during the crash, fall without any impact to the body.

I'm wondering if your case, you fell to the side, went flying, what?

Looks like good news overall. :)

What $$$ are we talking here?
Over $60 with tax and shipping. I think I paid about $80 for the frame. I’ll probably bite the bullet and order it. I thought about just going to a single speed and chain tensioner, but I have pedaled home in 1st gear on one occasion after frying my controller, so there’s the rare occasion where I’ve needed gears.

I’m not looking forward to rehab on my shoulder. Straightening my elbow after 5weeks is painful, but bareable, but lifting my shoulder after 10-12 weeks is going to be excruciating. Back when I dislocated the same shoulder, the PT was pretty painful even with only a few weeks in the sling.

I wonder why it's so expensive. Maybe Chalo knows of some lower priced sources?

Oftentimes, a break or fracture is simpler and less overall painful rehab. Hope that holds true for your condition.

I think it's probably a rare frame when compared to something like Specialized that cranks out thousands. Cove Stiffee FR, the model was only made for around 4 years. Things were changing fast back then, so I think the hardtail freeride bikes were shortlived. I wonder if I can fabricate something, since I don't shift 99.9% of the time anyway.

Most are cheaper because they're forged or HIP cast pieces, with minimal finish machining. That one is CNC machined from flat bar (probably because production volumes didn't support high production tooling) and costs more accordingly.

Here's the cheapest one I've found. I don't know how much shipping would cost, or whether they'll ship internationally at all:

That looked promising until getting to the checkout stage where only 3 countries are listed in the drop down, the UK, plus two small European island countries. :(
Yay Brexit! As Americans, most of us always knew they sucked. They're just driving the point home.

I ended up ordering one out of Canada. $45 delivered. Ugh. Looks good though 🙂

Ordered a new set of brakes, so the old fronts will be a spare. I need to check if I have pads, since the stock ones last time were crappy.
I did a quick inventory of parts and found the 12v buck converter and the EZrider for the PAS upgrade. I’ll probably redo my lights now that I’m putting in the 12v supply. I haven’t started looking fo a fork yet. I might just change out the seals on the one I have on now. I might as well do my cable/conductor consolidation since I’ll have everything apart anyway.
I have to inspect my rear derailleur in case it got damaged hanging off back when I rode home. I have other stuff I need to order, too, like switches for custom digital inputs for the CA, and some ABS to redo my connector box and relocate it.

I’m shooting for finishing the repairs and mods by Spring, if the doc gives a thumbs up next week.

EDIT 10-28-24.
Note to self: don’t forget about the upgrade list items
Planned upgrades:
Replace undersized breaker
Torque sensing BB
Hub heat sink mod

Ugh bad news. Well bad, but could be worse. My collarbone didn't heal, and won't. I'm in the percent of folks that don't heal, and there's no surgical remedy. However, out of that percentage, there's a smaller percentage that don't heal, but experience no pain. So far it seems like I'm in that category, although I haven't moved through my full range of motion, I've moved it overhead just doing normal stuff and haven't felt anything but a little tightness. The caveat is, I can't do anything that impacts that shoulder, like running into a wall or something. I can get back to shoveling dirt and moving it in my wheelbarrow, since I'm 4 months behind working on my backyard. However, my arm/bicep looks like a noodle from not getting any exercised lol.
That said, now my ebike repairs are on the front burner, where before I felt like I had a bunch of time to work on it.😧

Interesting that you can't heal? have you ever failed to heal a bone before?
Do you have a plate attaching the collarbone?

. How are the broken parts sitting in relation to each other? In my case they should’ve rebroken it and it took years to fully heal. A surprise

Never had a broken bone. The fracture is near the shoulder joint and the pieces are too small to attach with surgery. If it happened in the middle, then he could screw it together. There’s 3 pieces and a fair amount of gap between them. He said the tissue around the bones will grow around to stabilize them. I’d say 3/8” to 1/2” gap between the fragments judging by the X-rays. 🙁

Damn dude, that's the worst kind of fracture, you might actually be able to heal bone, just that the distance things need to grow & lack of ability to load means the healing will be ultra slow.

That distance is way too high. i would be concerned about it healing funny & deformed with no support.. bending other bones around it. Ideally, you don't want that happening but it's often what they let happen to patients instead of fixating this bone.

Complex, custom fixation is possible. If you end up healing funny then i would bring up the idea. otherwise your shoulder bones will not be aligned and then you will have issues with this shoulder in time.

Another problem is, things are so screwed up that you can't put small amounts of pressure/work on the bone to prod it to heal.

When i had my tibia fracture, i was an overachiever in physical therapy, i also took this supplement religiously, plus collagen, to provide my body an extra amount of most raw materials it needed for repair. This full length bone fracture with 2mm of distance between still took 9 months to heal.

You can't do that so i think it's going to be a while.

You know, a recumbent or semi recumbent bike will take load off your shoulder versus an upright.. the only load on it will be a steering motion and it's weight resting on the seat back.. might be a good path for you once you're ready to saddle back up.

Due to a bicycle wreck I have had a broken collar bone at the end where it attaches to the shoulder. Dominate arm. Lived with that for thirty-plus years. Outside of not being able to throw a ball it wasn't too much of a problem. That is until the pandemic, when I painted every room of my house. Then it began to really hurt. When I went to the doctor about it he refused to believe it was broken, saying I was born that way. That really pissed me off, because I was there when it broke, and spent 5 weeks in a sling. When I finally had a consult with an orthopod, he didn't recommend a surgical fix, saying that anything he'd do would probably make it worse. So, I live with the pain. Just one more in a growing list.

That's because it didn't heal correctly, and the surrounding joint is now screwy.

Same thing happened to my left shoulder when i was young, the shape is deformed, so my left arm has forever been weaker. I have done everything in the gym to strengthen my left shoulder ( muscle will inherently stabilize a joint ) and this is the only thing sitting between me and constant low level shoulder pain.

They wouldn't do this with an ankle, they'd insist the bones are lined up correctly because they know the ankle is complex and reliant on proper alignment. Other bones don't get the same kind of attention.

Other than a helmet, what’s the next important piece of safety gear for bike riders with higher powered motors? Chest and shoulder armour? Gloves? From the injuries described above im thinking maybe good to get some body armour
