Hey guys!

I got a tip from CNC Dave about some stuff going on at Castle. So, I gave them a call. I spoke with Bernie in tech support. We spoke for over a half hour. It looks like they are working on a 140 amp HV controller with on-board data logging including current ripple logging! It must have crazy fast sampling rate to capture current ripple.

Anyway, they are in the design stage right now. This should not be a hugely time consuming thing like the SHV line has been because they are using an established platform in their HV110 ESC. This is an entirely new controller. However, they are borrowing heavily from the HV110 design for this new "ICE HV 140" controller.

Apparently they are using the HV110 new style FET board that are now fully populated with higher quality FETs and an entirely new controller board with higher gate current available along with new firmware and data logging. This is truely good news!

Beyond that, we spoke about the new HV110 that uses very thin and wide FETs. These are the HV110s that have been shipping over the last few months. Bernie told me the thermal transfer rate of the new FETs is far beyond the old style. That yeilds a far more thermally stable ESC as well as allowing greater amp draw. He said the new style HV110 (again these have been shipping for a couple months now) has surplus gate current now that they are using fewer more efficient FETs. That is resulting in lower heat as well. I can attest to this in my PK Ripper. The ESCs on that bike run nice and cool no matter how hard I abuse those poor things.

Anyway, I have been trying to get onto their BETA test list for over a year to no avail. But Bernie told me I have (in his opinion) more RC E-bike experience and anyone else and he would try to get me on the ICE HV 140 BETA list. He said giving me a ESC to run in a bike is like of like saying "Here, beat on this with a hammer for a half hour........" So, he said that would be a great bit of info for them.

I asked about current limiting. He said they are not doing it because in the RC market, the limit would be turned off in most applications and the controllers could not be warranteed then and that would be a hassle. So, no limiting for now. But, he also said these new controllers should be FAR more stable than even the new HV110. So limitting may not be much needed.

At any rate, I am excited to see what comes along the pike!

Hi Matt,

Is this the same one?:

The new Castle HV 140 controllers are now available.

12S LiPo or 50 volts and 140 amps constant--up to 7000 watts!
Weight: 5.3 oz

Steve Neu

$339.00
The Phoenix 140 is just the ticket for powering the high power EDFs and other large planes that demand lots of current.
Ratings:
12S LiPo or 50 volts max
140 amps constant
Weight: 150 grams(5.3 oz)
Size: 71mm/39mm/32mm
Program with Castle Link

The controller is based of the HV 110 but has more FETs and double power and motor cables.

Hmm, cool! Bernie was telling me about the ICE version of that controller that is not available yet. Now I see you can already get this new controller and the ICE version will be even better!

SWEEEEEET!!!!!!

I asked John Holmes to try to get me two of these new HV140s for the Ripper. That would put me over 11kw if my new cells can stay above 40 volts under load.

BTW...I have one of the old HV110's any chance of Castle upgrading it to the new version?

Probably for $90:

5. I own an older version Castle Creations product. Can it be upgraded to the current version?

It depends on the nature of the changes and how far out of current revision your product is. Some minor hardware changes can be implemented. This is true if the printed circuit board is the same on your product and the version you want to upgrade to. If, however, it is a major hardware change, for example a completely new printed circuit board, then the hardware change generally cannot be installed.

Most software improvements can be added to older products. Again, this is usually dictated by whether the printed circuit board is the same in the older and newer version.

Cost of upgrades vary by product and amount of work to be done. Contact us with specific details on your product to get an estimate of costs.

This is very good news as we know the controller issue is a loud squeaking wheel.

No resaon to unless you are really going to push it HARD. My recumbent still uses and old style HV110 with no problems. It just runs warmer. But it still runs fine and all software is the same.
