If I can borrow a bigger Sony MemoryStick (Duo? I forget which version) for my camera (assuming it can use more than 1GB), and I can figure out a crashproof mount for it so it can't be damaged if I do something stupid like last time (or worse), then I will record with mine, too. But it's the only digicam I have that records video, and the best digicam I have (the others have various problems or are just plain really old and low-res).

Anyone that brings a spare camera and mount can put it on my bike, as long as they're willing to take the risk with it since I probably will crash at least once, knowing me.

Maybe this time I will even remember to take pics and stuff with the digicam while I'm there, before the event is practically over. :(

That's true John, Thinking about it, the 3 really tight corners are all righties. 2, 4 and 9. The tightest one is on the backside,(9) but it's actually taken slow, so it's easy for me. The combination of 7 and 8 is a tough pair of lefties, especially 8. 8 is so hard, it slows you to where 9 is easy. But even the 90 degree lefties are nothing to snooze through. They just come at you so fast, wham, wham, wham. Only the snakey part, turns 5 and 6 , is easy on that track. Turn 1 is fairly easy, but you will hit it braking awful hard with turn 2 looming. Or if you have great brakes, you will fly through it. Another leftie, turn 12 looks easy, but if you aren't running wot through it you lose, so it's no picnic.

Basicly, the track is plenty challenging, left turn or right. But you are correct, the righties are the toughest corners on the track, and you see the crashes on turn 2 and turn 13, both righties. 2 is tighter than you think, and on 13, you are going faster than you think, plus if you miss that inside groove, you have a much harder time staying on the track.

I haven't noticed one side wearing out faster than the other on my tires yet, but I have pretty much burned through the center of my motor wheel tire. Now that I have juice, I spin it taking off a lot like you'd expect with a front hub.

Speaking of juice, I just clicked buy again at HK. Man, Iv'e got it baaaaad. I'll be bringing 25 bricks of lipo to the race. Wife is definitely giving me that look, but I know she goes to work and brags how crazy I am.

Ok, guys, I am gutted, and now it's official.

I've not joined in this thread so far, because I've been working out if I can get to the April DR instead of coming over later in the year.

Apart from the business of not actually being ready (this is a normal state for any race, so I'm not panicking about that), I have the problem that I'm supposed to be working in Germany on Weds 13th and Thursday 14th, so getting to Arizona for the Saturday looked tight.

Anyway, I've just been handed notice of an extra meeting in Germany on Friday 15th, so it's definitely not on. Sorry. I wish all the ES contingent the best of luck, be fast and safe, and show the gassers what e-bikes can do.

Aww shucks. Seening you there would have really made it an event. Visiting European champion and all that. Hopefully the summer race may still happen? that race was pretty interesting, given the weight limit and all.

That one I likely would have trouble attending, since my job involves hundreds of flower beds. Summer is not vacation time for a horticulturist.

Not sure I could claim that any more. It was a bit tongue in cheek anyway, based on there not being any events except the one in the UK.

Actually, one of the disappointing aspects is that I won't get to meet you guys in person this time round.

Nick

Yes, tounge in cheek, just like I was US champion for a time, being the only ebike to show up at last years DR. :) Evo holds the title now, since he did beat me last fall.

For those that are going to stay in Tucscon overnight after this years race, DO NOT even consider missing the GABA bike swap meed the next morning, on 4 th Avenue. Blocks and blocks of bikes to gawk at, and do bring a few bucks because you WILL find that wierd part you have been looking for. Whole bikes seem to be a bit overpriced, but parts can be a bargian. $25 rims for $5 that sort of thing.

Here's a link to pics from last year. http://tucsonvelo.com/photos/gaba-bike-swap-photos/1271#

I regret that the critical time for me to get cells in order to build a pack for a racer in time for this race has come and gone. I will offer my support to the racing community again when I have something in hand.

That's OK. Time slipps by fast. I've been getting a lot of HK boxes lately, started panicing that I might need something too late to get it.

The solution, pile up lipo like midas. Muahhhahaa.

This even looks like fun and it would be nice to meet some of the people from here. Not sure if I can make the 7 hour drive from Vegas though. It's happening 1 week after I get back from the Philippines but I'm still gonna be all kinds of jet lagged. I'm probably going to be broke too :( Too bad hotels aren't cheaper.

25 mph speed limit in the neighborhood ya know. Just a test of the camera mount, to see if it shakes, or needs repointing. I dig the way it shows the tire, and hears the motor grunt. Real practice takes place about 15 miles from the house in a parking lot, where I won't run down the neighbors kid.

The best practice, is going to be arriving in Tucson early, and going out and renting a little motorcycle from the kart track. I'm not sure if he sells demos on the zero motorcycle he's got there.

I do go out on a slower bike in the neighborhood, and get more used to a hard lean. 25 mph is legal, and about as fast as you want to corner narrow residential streets with parked cars and curbs. Even slow, you need to get used to wearing out the edges of the tires. I still say practice both left and right turns. If I go out and run a route one way, and then back the same route, I get both lefts and rights. 25 mph cornering sounds slow, but it's not, some of the corners on the track will be taken at 25 mph by even fast riders. Many riders take all the corners at no more than 25 mph.

Nice vid there. Is that what they call a Travis Pastrana pass? Oh, no, he didn't do a backflip so that wasn't Travis. Check out the nationwide cup nascar races this spring. Travis is going to run a car in them this season. That sould be entertaining.

Anybody looking at motel choices yet?

Close to the airport is closest to the track. I'm not familiar with that part of Tucscon, so I don't know what else is near, like good bars and restaraunts. Tends to pricy.

I'm getting attached to the idea of this place, http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/productInfo.do?propertyCode=03074 for the bars and restaraunts nearby. This best western on Stone, has a reasonable rate. There is a dive I sayed at last year two blocks away for those on the super cheap. The big attraction to this motel is that it is very close to 4th ave, which is colledge hang out with lots of interesting bars, headshops, and local wildlife.

The morning after the race, they close 4-5 blocks of 4th ave off, and hold the biggest damn bicycle swap meet I've ever seen! It's a must do for us to at least gather nearby, and ride the racing bikes down to the swap and show off.

For the dinner after the race, a very nice bar and steakhouse called the Bum Steer is just a few blocks from the best western. Allowing the shortest, easiest possible drive home, assuming there is not designated driver. Or short cab ride, or moderately long walk. Other good venues are relatively close too, like a brew pub / pizza joint on Speedway.

The Best western is not close to the track at all, but it's easy to find, and close to the freeway making getting to the track pretty easy. The neighborhood is as good as it gets in any big city. It has a restaraunt and bar on site too, so it would not be mandatory to go anywhere else for the post race gabfest.

Looks like priceline had good rates for this place, about 70 bucks.

Any high end stuff at that swap meet? I'm thinking that selling a high power ebike with a bit of bling could fund much of the trip. First, win the race with it and give it a quick shine and go to the swap meet and sell it for $4k.

Possible or no way?

John

REALLY a pedalers crowd at the swap. But who knows? Last year there was several gasser vendors there. I don't know how they did. Not sure what the swap meet spaces cost, but I think it's pretty cheap. More likely you could sell an affordable commuters ebike than a hot rod. I've been looking at my bike collection, but the ones I'd sell are junk. Might try putting a for sale sign on your bike at the races though. Not such a pedalers crowd, and they did get their illusions wiped away by my bike last fall. But it's not a very wealthy group. If it was, they'd have supermoto motorcylcles.

I can store bikes till next year, or hold em till sold in the USA. I'd carry it home on the roof of the subaru, so mabye a ding or two.

The swap though, is THE place to score odds and ends, NOS parts. $25 rims for $5 that sort of thing. I'm going to lay in a years supply of brake pads, look for tire bargians, stuff like that. Last year I got my armored race pants there dirt cheap. I'll be looking for a boardtracker style frame of course.

There is high end stuff there, lots of carbon to drool on, vintage stuff still in cherry condition that likely never sells. Cool to look at anyway.

Is Arlo1 going to be there? I know Thud is going, but he doesn't have a bike yet. What about about other high powered rigs? I ask because it looks like a no-way for me, but I'm interested in sending a bike if there's someone looking for a ride that will blow the doors, or should I say wheels, off of any of the gassers displayed to date, but a bike tuned not to be too much of a handful to ride.

As far as I've heard, the list on the first post of page one is it. You might talk to Thud about it.

Too bad you can't come, but hoo boy, with airfares heating up I bet it would be pretty pricy for you to make it. Several others I would have loved to see there, that also would have a long expensive trip. Ypedal, Dr Bass, Justin. Kinda dissapointed Methods hasn't said he's coming, and Drunkskunk too. Sweeping the podium is a possibilty, but how cool would it be to sweep the first 10 spots, or 8 of the first 10. 8)

Kinda dissapointing too, that there isn't more vendor interest. I understand they don't all have huge deep pockets, and they don't sell racing bikes. But it would be cool to see them come and show some nice neat high end ebikes. My racer of course, looks like it's made of scraps from the backyard since it is made from srcaps.

Time Change of Death Race 2011

MHC has pushed the start time of DR to 5pm

DR 2011 will be under the lights 8)

Bikes will not be allowed to enter the pits until 5pm

(crossposted to MB forum, too):
That's likely gonna be a problem for me, cuz I really should be back home in Phoenix by that night to feed the dogs and let them out and such.

I am not sure if I can get anyone that I trust to be able to handle it, as it's not as simple as just plopping down food and letting them out in the backyard (cuz there's five, and they don't all get along with each other).

I'll have to see what I can come up with in the next couple weeks I guess. :(

(I still haven't setup transportation for me and the bike(s) there and back anyway, so it could all be a moot point).

Well, at least we won't need as much sun screen. If we arrive in the early afternoon, we'll have something entertaining to watch though. 8) And lots of time to visit with any other riders that show up befor 5. It could be an OK way to do it in the end, but real harsh on those that have more than an hour drive after the race. Even harsher on those that can't be gone in the PM though.

Personally, It'll be a looong day for me, but at least the driving to the track can start later in the day. No way it means more sleep, I'll be lucky to sleep at all the night before. Somehow though, I think I won't feel tired when the green flag drops.

Too bad about the dog issue AW. I dig it, it takes a BRAVE dogsitter for us to leave the house overnight. Back when we had all the rescued agressive dogs, my brother had to fight for his life for 15 min when he walked in the door. dog went for his throat. But even nice dogs that size take a better than normal dogsitter. I'm sure you could hire a professional dogsitter. We'll pass the hat at the race to pay for it AW, if that is all that is keeping you from coming. Now that you are moderating, we owe you.

Sure is fun to drift the corners though. And cool looking. Watching those motard vids is really good for jacking up for the race.

I used to drift corners on a KZ750 by putting power on the wheel. It was brake, lean, then power on till you start countersteering.

However, on my lighter road bikes (Yam RD 250, R5 350, and RD 400) I often used the "scrubbing speed" technique at the very apex of "slower and/or tight corners". Back then the term "scrubbing speed" = "lean so hard that it slows you down" (this is, of course, hard on your tires) . This technique was, in my experience, best used while never letting off on the throttle.

...
God I miss my RD400C Hit 4500 rpm and hang on.

Sorry for the time change guys but it was out of my hands.

On the bright side we will have more track time. Usually windy in April and the winds die down when the sun sets, and it will be a nice cool evening and more comfortable for us.

The track will be different at night, the gas bikes will make more power with the cool night air. The tires and track will be more slick for interesting laps....its gonna be fun.
