gas price thread

Even that ignores the dramatic reduction in fuel and maintenance cost of EVs compared to stinkers. Because ultimately, what matters to the average wage slave is the total cost of ownership, not the purchase cost.
Agreed. People tend to be shortsighted, but usually figure out the real cost (to them) of things. Eventually.

Why dont you compare the cheapest EV , to the Cheapest ICE ?
Cheapest EV..Nissan Leaf,..$28,400
Direct equivalent ICE....Nissan Versa,..$14,900
Of course. Right now they are more expensive. 10 years ago they were WAY more expensive. If they follow the same cost curve that they have for the past 10 years, they will be cheaper than the cheapest ICE cars in 8 more years.
....And its hard to believe the cost of motors , batteries, etc will reduce dramatically in the future since the cost and availability of key raw materials seems to be bottoming out , if not increasing.
SR and induction motors require no rare earths at all and are common in EV's now.
LFP batteries require no cobalt at all and Tesla has just switched to them - and they are a lot cheaper.
Controllers require semiconductors. Semiconductors follow very steep cost reduction curves.
Once real big volumes of EVs start to appear, material shortages will put upward pressure on costs.
We heard all the same things about steel, rubber, platinum, palladium and rhodium. Too expensive! Do you know how many TONS of rubber you need every WEEK?

In 1972, Lee Iacocca worried about those platinum-containing catalytic converters, and wrote that if the "EPA does not suspend the catalytic converter rule, it will cause Ford to shut down." Did that happen?
Another of those “breakthroughs” will be needed .
Nope. We have everything we need right now. Now we just have to get into economies of scale.

Yes, once ICE gets under 10% of cars sold, overall costs per year / per mile will be much lower for consumers.

And hopefully the whole dealership business model trampled in the dust of time

When I was at the junk yard sitting in vehicles to get an idea of what I will buy as its a one stop shop and I dont have to go to several different lots and bother the sales people acting like I want to buy knowing I wont buy from them. I saw some hybrids and wondered what they did with the batteries. I should ask them next time I go because I need to sit in the Jetta again to get a feel for it, the Passat was nice but not recommended, Mazda6/Accord/Camry is roomy and recommended purchase, surprisingly Impala's are recommended I guess the 3800 series engine is pretty stout aside from some minor aspects. Malibus have problems, just looked at Kia's in the 1990-2016 car book and those have become better quality, Hyndai Elantra's are nice, I rented plenty of those, Nissan Versa have CVT and all CVT's are absolute crap.

Im a patient man, but i know that none of us alive today, or our children, will live to see that
It takes energy to transport a body, ALL energy costs $$s including electricity, and it cannot get much cheaper than it is today.

Ahh, changed your mind a little then jack, from your previous claim of.... ?
“The cheapest EV in the US is already a bit more than half the cost of the average new gas car, ”
But ... FYI ..
A Nissan Leaf in 2012 had a list price of Au$51,400
Today ,10 years later the Nissan leaf lists at Au$52,400. !!
How about a Tesla S...?
Cost in 2012.. US$57,400 Base model
Cost in 2022..US$96,440...Base model
Not much of a cost reduction curve to see there !

....And its hard to believe the cost of motors , batteries, etc will reduce dramatically in the future since the cost and availability of key raw materials seems to be bottoming out , if not increasing.

ALL motors require copper,.. and there is a finite supply,...watch the price !
Tesla recently changed from induction to SRIM motors.
And , they are onnly fitting LFP packs in SOME mod 3s with reduced range ,in order to reduce costs.....( or increase margins ?)

Back on topic....
Where are those gas prices this week in the USA ?
I saw that $5 + / gal was already happening in some places..
Down here we are at Au$2.0 per litre.. which is about US$ 5.60 / gal
..Dopy Joe needs to open up those taps again ..pronto ! :x

Agenda 2030 demands a 90% reduction of human population.

Only after that can we 6uild 6ack 6etter.

Obviously you are Racist, Bigoted and Transgender... or worse !!!

Joe Biden is comatose, I wonder what his tv appearance ratio is compared to the previous presidents because it seems like Joe is always messing up if he isnt heavily medicated properly and reading off the teleprompter.

Are you investing or on a holding pattern?

$5.59/gal here as of this morning. Keeps going up. This may actually be good for ebikes and the EV movement in general.

+1

Sell your big truck or big suv soon, I am seeing more and more of them in the car lots not being sold, and even more in the auctions being rolled over a few times into the next auction. I am actively looking but for a small to mid size car 4 or 6 cylinder.

With big suvs and trucks, it is literally going to cost 30 cents a mile just in fuel costs alone.
@12mpg and fuel at $5.69/gallon its actually 47 cents a mile.

Joe was handed inflation and high oil prices. Everything besides what he has been handed has gotten better in the USA. If you want to blame someone, blame Trump for sucking Putin's you know what that has, to this day, caused things to go out of control. Talk about being comatose....

Wow ! ..what are you on ?.....i dont recall it being $100+ Per barrel , back then ?
Whatever Trump was doing to Putin..( more like squeezing his nuts ).. at least it did not kick off a war !
Infact , last time Dozey Joe was in government (VP) and talking to Putin,... Russia went all out in Syria !
Dozeys dealings in Ukraine whilst VP is a factor in the current situation,....Yea, smart guy !
When Mr T was at the controls, the USA became self sufficient in oil and gas,...
But.. Then Dozey’s first act was to kill that oil pipeline from Alaska and the one on the East coast....
..A sure way to reduce oil prices.
Dozey,.. ( and his half wit sidekick) ..or whoever is pulling the puppet strings, are really doing a fine job ! ..NOT.

 @ $7/gallon gasoline, and that is self serve
When will the gasoline thefts occur?
Punctured gas tanks, thefts of semis carrying fuel and offloaded, farms.

Is it just me, or has politics raised it's ugly head again?

At this point, almost impossible to keep them apart.

Sanctions against Russia have limited buyers of their crude oil, which is Russias main cash export. Oil money is what funds Russias military excursions.

Russia has been forced to deeply discount their oil this week to prevent needing to turn off the pumps. Want to know who couldn't resist buying cheap crude oil?

Shell.

They are buying cheap Russian oil and their dirty money is funding Russias continued murder, rape, and land theft in Ukraine.

Did Shell lower their gasoline prices?

Putin is content for Kyiv to be bombed into desolation. He wants eastern Ukraine up to the Dneiper river to form a land bridge to his Crimean base, and provide water for a reginery and a city of oil workers.

He wants southern Ukraine for its coastline and oil/gas reserves

Everyone, careful what you type as I'm warming up the delete button...
When someone takes to time to type something on the internet. Or paints a picture that hangs in a art gallery. Destroying what they created with your "delete button...". Just not nice.

If you so bothered by "politics". STOP reading. Might be best to bury your head in the sand.

That's not how the rules work here, Marty.

Seems like everyone wants to screw people over these days.

We have an economy that fails to reward real productivity-- but generously rewards rent seeking, skimming profits generated by others, opportunistic price gouging, or outright scams. Folks who want to get ahead here will do one or more of these things. That's why rich people are morally tainted.
