Oil going down? I guess the oil companies are figuring out that more people are blaming Putin then are blaming Biden...

No, just rigged markets. Pretty much anything that can give a solid reference to value suffers the same fate, gold being the classic example but oil is really the defining reference, pretty much everything is effected by the price of oil so an increasing oil price is effectively the same as a depreciating currency value. The most obvious example of this is probably Christine Lagarde's "7" speech from the IMF in 2014, the "7" turned out to be the 7 sisters, the oil majors. That precluded the drop from over $100 a barrel to less than $50 and initiated the economic recovery from the 2008 financial crash.

Hi oil price has me at least rethinking how long I can hold out before dumping the gasser's. May be a good time to start keeping an eye on the collectable ones before the masses of them get crushed. Certainly would be a worry buying a newer one and getting slammed with huge depreciation as is happening in some markets now. Happening quicker than I expected.

Depreciation will be even more as right now prices for any and all used and new vehicles are way higher but you can keep an eye out for deals, they are out there.

Auctions is an option, I dont know if Bank Repo's are up or not, the sites I go to online dont state anything, unreserved or bank repo so its hard to tell. You can't drive the vehicles, just start them up. You can hook up a computer to read the car but how much info can you really get out of an electric. Most of the used car dealers use the auctions, prior to covid I would hang out at the auctions for fun and I would see the same people there every time I would show up. I mean I wouldnt go every week, but I would go 3 or 4 times a year just as something free to do, if I didnt buy anything to eat.

You are not interested in very high fuel mileage diesel cars like the VW Golf/Jetta/Passat, or Smart car. I learned from the Car Wizard on YT that the Smart car you can no longer get any parts for and if you can find parts for them they are in Germany and take a long time to reach us in North America. I have driven the Smart car, its small comes in gas, diesel and electric hybrid. Its a great little go around town vehicle or a quick trip out into the country hillside mountains. Then theres others like the small Toyota Matrix, Honda Fit and various other very small to small cars. If you absolutely require a bigger car (one size up) with the same kind of fuel mileage then the diesels would be an option or full size electrics/hybrids.

Yeah a lot of places here are now over $6 a gallon.

Oil prices just dropped for the second week in a row, but of course fuel providers here have realized that they can keep prices as high as they like and people will buy gas anyway.

Here in Utah, we are close to energy independent ourselves. So we don't get affected by swings much. Today, the cost of regular was
4.38/gal at an average cost place. I could probably fill up my car at Costco for $4/gal, but it's not worth the drive for a car with a 10 gallon gas tank.

Just for the record:

FLEETWOOD, PA 3/14/22

Redner's, Gas station, a relatively large franchise in my area: With 64, gas stations, and super markets, local. Suburbia, and farmland. Mostly. A few semi-urban areas. Reading and Allentown.

$4.39. Reg.
$4.57. Mid.
$4.77. Premium.
$5.39. Diesel.

Finally has surpassed what I paid to fill a 6.5L Diesel in 2008. The most I ever paid, back then, in the middle of the city, was $4.98 a gallon.

Some certain Go-Karts are going for $20,000 - $38,000 on Bring a Trailer. That market exploded. i could never imagine owning a dealer leased, or dealer bought vehicle for the rest of my life, honestly. At this rate.

I'm at $4.05 for Premium yesterday in the Midworst. I'll just say im in the same region as Kansas/Omaha/Oklahoma City. Recent news implies the price increase was transitory, but the whole thing is kind of a charade and bidding war anyway. They're trying to make up for the 2020 losses.

It doesnt matter if you own a car your home or even work a homeless person has daily food from a food bank that's had oil in its delivery chain and growth delivery of feeds etc, the free clothing will have oil all over that.

What the world needs is to cut its addiction as much as possible but that aint gonna happen without oil, highspeed electric rail link best find some oil to run the heavy equipment its never ending before i even think of transporting my meat sack anywhere so a clean hippy approach wont work it will have to be scientific and widely agreed that 2050 plans are bollocks we need serious effort to get serious on nuclear with modern plants that self service the reactor into contrete blocks no human interaction that can be used for the footing of some unfavourables house and prisons for the lifers etc free radium lollipops.

Honestly a big, BIG way I stress to the very Republican-minded people I end up meeting, is that long-term cutting of our oil use in general means that this entire house of cards stays standing. Sure we'll eventually move to using coal instead- if we live thanks to Ocean acidification- but the cost to "clean" and purify the hydrocarbons from it for processing will be far more costly from such "heavy" sources than the "lighter" petroleum sources we use for plastics (I'm very sorry if I got those terms wrong), so a lot of things will just become too expensive. We have a ~50 year limit with demand that only increases, and so far the only nation I know of that has serious waste and package laws is Germany- and every plastic bag, cling wrap, or thing I touch or even type on right now just adds to it. Mental.

No, I got it. I did once drive cars every day, powering through the rat race. What I am honestly worried about the cost of the homeheating fuel, propane, too :things like that: and the sudden concept, that tends to go around in this modern day in age... that a heat pump... might be a good idea, very efficient: and useful to the average consumer: under the auspices of " clean power"...
I guy I know in your general area said on GRM a week back, that had he and his wife not taken out a loan for a wood pellet heater for their home the cost of fuel oil would have kept them from having heat this year. My electric bills even tripled, and my state literally is 60% wind!
Kinda neat to see all the stuff you do. If I could get my ass off this desktop, I'd be doing something similar- distractions like youtube even keep me from playing video games anymore.

These moments are when car drivers begin to pay a tiny amount of the cost they've exacted on everybody else. And we can enjoy these moments for that at least.
Bro, don't leap on that superiority ride. I know it's hard NOT to, when you've seen how badass the other side is or when you realize how easy life can be with your skillset, but believe me- there are some who at their core, are just deeply scared of cleverness or intelligence. They don't want to know, or even more damningly, are simply scared of the change and the potential. Angering them will only cause you grief, because at the end of the day they're the ones whom society always seems to have to drag along, and they slot into all walks of life. They ain't worth it.

Under $100 and the whining continues.

Are you surprised ?
All the actual data shows that any state or country that has introduced a significant amount of Wind and/or Solar also experienced a subsequent rise in the cost of electricity.
And there are obvious reasons why !

Whats switzerland upto theres something big happening they suspending accounts and claiming assets the first time in 500 year's its been a safe heaven for even hitler but the oligarchs no way.

Only if it's to be believed. Markets match supply to demand, right? If supply is short, the price goes up and vis versa. Here's a market that's just had 40% of its supply removed:
SMEOwibl.png

Nessasary for catalytic convertors and only replaceable with platinum. Oil may be different, the US can supply it's self so the dollar value is relevant but it has no relevance to countries that have had their supply reduced.

I wonder if the continuation of the Ukraine invasion and the response is now causing markets to return to normal; Russia never exported much crude to the world (except to China, and even then), GAZPROM really just sells Natural Gas to the EU, so I think now the industry is realizing that World War 3 is unlikely so it's all dropping.

War is going to get increasingly difficult to wage among big nations as the economy becomes increasingly globalized and interconnected.

It will also become increasingly expensive to wage.

Interesting graph on oil prices vs gas prices:

gas_prices.jpg

It's almost as if the oil companies are (gasp!) not lowering prices even though they could!

Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise, do the newer 2010+ vehicles require them in order to run or is it more to do with air quality controls the government pushes upon the vehicle owner to get tested to pass.
